I enjoyed this read. I didn't realize that the NCAA really promotes university presidential influence in the athletic department. I think it's great for an institution because athletics really do a great deal to market the university which of course directly correlates with dollars from alums, for educational purposes, research dollars, etc...

HANDS ON

As president of the University of Central Arkansas, Lu Hardin has been very hands-on in athletics ... hands-on in most everything.

Shortly after Hardin became president, he shifted the command flow chart so the athletic department reported directly to him rather than a vice-president.

In NCAA athletics today, that's a growing trend. The days of czarish and kingdom-building athletic directors such as Frank Broyles are pretty much over. Under the direction of NCAA head Myles Brand (who got national attention by firing Bobby Knight at Indiana), presidents are encouraged and expected to take more charge of their athletic programs.

"I sat at a table with Myles Brand during the recent Southland Conference meetings," Hardin said.

"It's been his philosophy that the success of the NCAA depends on presidential involvement. They are in the best position to stress academics and graduation rates."
