The Paladins were out of only one game last season (GSU will get theirs in Greenville this season, I hope), and really looked good when the offense and defense showed up on the same day. Had a lot of ups and downs as you might expect from a young team with a new coaching staff, but really has laid a good foundation for bringing Furman back to its familiar spot near the top of the heap.

That is more or less my point. Furman got thumped soundly in Statesboro in a game where Georgia Southern played as well as I have seen them play in 10 years (I don't even think Furman played that poorly, really). They beat App and Wofford convincingly. I have no problem where Furman is "ranked" pre-season, only that they are behind three teams they beat last year.

Furman was a few plays away from the playoffs last season. Not that close counts, but in the first year of a head coach, even the skeptics could see that Furman looked infinitely better than they did in 2010, when they finished with a similar record. If the Paladins make the same progress in 2012 that they did in 2011, I have no reason to think that they shouldn't be a very competitive team in the SoCon.

If I was a Furman Fan, I believe that I would wait until after the opening game to declare any chance of SoCon domination. It seems to me that the Paladins lost a lot to graduation last season, and have some question marks(like most of the conference) heading into this year. We Samford Fans think that we have a chance to field the best squad we've had since joining the SoCon. From a psychological standpoint, our win in Greenville last year(holding the Paladins to 71 yards of rushing) was extremely important. Furman at Samford in the opener is a critical game for both teams. I do agree that Furman will have a good team this year and be very competitive. They will, more than likely, be a solid favorite when they come to B'ham. Samford is loaded with talent, however, and my guess is that our Dogs will win and begin a very successful SoCon season.

I've noted this before, but the Furman/Samford game is a huge game to open the season. Samford has given Furman fits even in their losses. I expect another tight game that will come down to a few plays.

Your point about the running game is a good one. To win, Furman is going to have to run the ball. They don't have the individual "one man show" type talents, but as a team, if they can run the ball, utilize their play action, and get the ball out to their big receivers, they'll be tough.

Games like that happen. I went back and looked at the numbers, and Furman had over 400 yards of offense. That wasn't "garbage time" either, as GSU dominated the time of possession and the scoreboard in the second half. GSU had over 500 yards of offense, but frankly, I don't think you expect a 30 point margin on a 100 yard difference in yardage. Furman still lost the game, but I think they played a lot better than the scoreboard indicated. "Snowballed" is a good word to use.

I've seen GSU play a bunch, and that was as good as I had seen them. I realized it was a bit of a bizarre game after heading to Greenville the next weekend, and watching Furman run the same defensive game plan while shutting down Wofford's offense. It was just one of those games where you tip your hat to your opponent on a game well played and say "see you next season."

This kid's value cannot be underestimated. I can attribute four or five losses off the top of my head over the past several years where the deciding blow came down to poor special teams by Furman. More often than not, it was a poor snap that set off a chain of events. Furman never really had a special teams coach under Bobby Lamb, and certainly never had a scholarship long snapper.

Not sure if this is correct… but he committed to Air Force at the last minute. I don't think you sign a NLI with a military school. He didn't like it and withdrew… and signed with Furman.

Paladin Quarterback Travis Eman to transfer to a school in Canada to be closer to home. I believe there was a family illness he needed to tend to.

Highly touted kid dual threat quarterback who many thought would compete for the starting job this season. Rumors out of camp are, though, that he may have started the season as the third string QB behind a fifth year senior and talented freshman. So, not a huge loss for the Paladins on the field, but certainly seemed like a decent kid. Wish him luck.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach Bruce Fowler said he saw plenty of positives in his squad's Saturday's scrimmage in Paladin Stadium, just two weeks prior to Furman's Sept. 1 season opener against Southern Conference foe Samford.

"We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish in certain situations; we were able to do some things within the structure of a game, with officials and in game rhythm with the clock running. That was good for us as a team and will help us get ready for our opener," commented Fowler following the two hour session.

"Now we'll go look at the tape and make some evaluations, but my first impression was, at times, we did some good things and executed very well on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game. We will continue to emphasize that consistency in execution in all areas will be the key to any success we have. That is the critical part."

The Paladin defensive line was among the first to earn Fowler's praise.

"It looked like we performed pretty well up front on defense, particularly against the run. I like our front seven, and Matt Solomon continues to play very solid at middle linebacker. Josh Lynn (defensive end)also performed well. He's had a good preseason and is one of our team leaders, a captain."

Solomon is taking over for All-American Kadarron Anderson, who is now with the New Orleans Saints.

The receiving corps, which must overcome the loss of graduated veterans Sederrik Cunningham and Tyler Maples, also gained mention.

"We made some good catches in traffic. The flip side of that is we were also competing for the ball on defense. That's going to make us better as a team.

"I thought Dakota Derrick handled our offense well, particularly in the two-minute session. He made a good throw in the red zone to Will King, who continues to be consistent and solid out there."

A pair of freshmen, running back Marcus Anderson and quarterback Reese Hannon, continue to garner attention.

"Marcus Anderson missed a few practices but is back out there doing some really good things for a young player, and Reese Hannon continues to progress."

Hannon, a 2011 all-state performer at nearby Greer High School, has solidified his position as the backup to Derrick.

Fowler, who earlier in the week said he was beginning to see improvement in the Paladin offensive line, again complimented the work of a unit that must replace two starters and build depth.

"Our first unit offensive line overall, while not close to perfect, at times looks like they are making some progress in pass protection."

Unfortunately, I am sorry to say, Samford lags behind most of the SoCon in the area of attendance. This has been improving somewhat, and should get really better soon, as the university is building 3 new residence halls just behind the stadium. Being a holiday weekend and being televised may also hurt our crowd for this game. Furman has a strong B'ham alumni base, and usually has a good representation. With good weather, I see about 7,000-8,000, but would be delighted to see more, and that certainly could be the case. That was about the size crowd that we had in 2010 for the FU game. BTW, don't let the stadium capacity number fool you. Seibert is bowl-shaped and I have seen us easily handle crowds much much larger than that figure.

Meanwhile, you have lost one conference game already, and dropped the Coastal Carolina game in overtime.

Well, just to get facts straight - Furman played (granted, lost) in the NATIONAL TITLE game in 2001. Thats pretty darn good there. In 2004, we were 'probably' the best team - losing by one point in the playoffs to James Madison after numerous errors including a fumble on the 2 yard line going in for a TD to seal the game; James Madison who won the Natty easily after escaping Greenville. In 2005 in the playoffs we 'slipped on the ice' up in Boone with Ingle Martin or we were headed back to the national title game again (quarterfinals, semifinals?). From 2000 (where we beat UNC 28-3 !) to 2005 we were pretty deadly.

Furman's had two back to back heart breakers. Still, they are 0-1 in the SoCon and that is pretty much all that matters. Remember they lost to Elon, Samford, and Coastal last season but still beat Wofford and App.

Frankly, I don't think Furman fans recognize just how barren the cupboard was when Lamb left. Lots of scholarship players that do not even dress on Fowler's team. Seven true freshmen on the two deep. Likely going forward with a true freshman QB. It's going to be a rebuilding year, but I like the young talent on the team right now. I don't think this is permanent.
