Articles from around the SLC about the entrance of A&M-Corpus Christi and the University of Central Arkansas into the SLC. Welcome to these two schools as they join a conference that top to bottom is an exciting conference, not just in football, but across the board from basketball to softball to baseball. We're looking forward to competing against you folks!

Isles will make quiet entrance into Southland
By Lee Goddard Caller-Times
July 1, 2006

There will be no parties or celebrations - the celebrating already has been done - as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi formally joins the Southland Conference today, ending seven seasons as an independent.

The Islanders will enter the conference in a low-key manner for two reasons - there is no athletic director in place, and the school already has been treated like a conference member.

A&M-Corpus Christi has had voting privileges and representation at conference meetings since the September announcement that it would enter the conference. The Islanders even landed the rights to host the 2007 conference cross country championships - the first time they will host a conference championship - at the Southland spring meetings.

The Islanders have finally found a home outside their island.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi has come a long way since the school started its athletic programs nine years ago, winning games, championships and respect. The one achievement that consistently eluded the Islanders was finding a conference to welcome them.

The wait ended today, when TAMUCC and Central Arkansas officially became members of the Southland Conference.

"When I took this job I truly felt we would be in a conference within three years," said Ronnie Arrow, who has coached the Islanders' men's basketball team since the program's first season of 1998-99. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would take this long. But we're in now and that's what matters."

North Texas' Dickenson no longer pursuing job

By Lee Goddard Caller-Times
July 1, 2006

The list for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's new athletic director just got trimmed as candidate Hank Dickenson withdrew from contention Friday morning.

Dickenson cited a few reasons in deciding to remain as a senior associate athletic director at North Texas, including support from his colleagues in Denton and the time it has taken for A&M-Corpus Christi to make a final decision.

"I think it was a culmination of factors," Dickenson said. "The bottom line is I've been here a long time, and there have been a lot of people lobbying to keep me here. I'm in a good situation here with great people."

Letter to Log Cabin Democrat from SLC Commish

Letters: Welcome extended to UCA

Tom Burnett,
Frisco, Texas

On behalf of the member institutions of the Southland Conference, and with great anticipation and enthusiasm, I extend a warm welcome to the University of Central Arkansas as the institution officially joins our successful and tradition-rich athletic organization this week.

As the Southland began its exploration into membership expansion almost two years ago, our institutional presidents were only interested in identifying prospective members that met the highest standards of athletic and academic achievement.

From the beginning, it was evident that under the dynamic, visionary leadership of President Lu Hardin and the extraordinary work of other administrators, UCA was poised for greatness, whether it was in the classroom or on the athletic fields. The Southland was drawn to UCA due to its commitment to athletics success at the Division I level, its continued academic accomplishments, its fan and community support, and strong media coverage.

For over four decades, the Southland Conference has represented these same ideals, and through strong presidential direction and a unified commitment to success, the league has maintained itself as a viable and competitive entity through the years. The addition of UCA strengthens the Southland in every way possible, and we look forward to assisting the university through the challenge of gaining full Division I status in the near future.

We are very excited to work with President Hardin, as well as athletic director John Thompson, the administrators, coaches, student-athletes and the entire UCA community. The city of Conway has been overwhelmingly gracious as we have visited in recent months, and we look forward to returning to the area frequently.

Also coming to Conway on a regular basis will be competitive groups of Cowboys, Demons, Bobcats, Lumberjacks, Roadrunners, Mavericks, Colonels, Lions, Cardinals, Bearkats and Islanders. We can assure you that UCA s new competitors will develop quickly into intense rivals, and will also help the Bears and Sugar Bears develop their Division I credentials in the coming years.

Again, we are thrilled to welcome UCA to the Southland Conference! Thank you.

(EDITOR's NOTE: Tom Burnett is a commissioner for the Southland Conference)

UCA is a great addition.

I don't get too excited about A&M-CC joining the SLC. Tarleton St would have been a better choice.

I don't get too excited about A&M-CC joining the SLC. Tarleton St would have been a better choice.

How so?

A&M-CC already has respected programs in mens' basketball, womens' basketball, softball and mens' tennis. Heck, they're even coming off their best track and field season, having their first-ever All-American. Facilities-wise, they have the top arena in the conference coming in and have Hooks Field to lean on as well. They'll definitely help conference RPI!

Tarleton St is a Div II program that has had less success than the University of Central Arkansas. Their facilities are nowhere in comparison to A&M-CC and they would be in the same situation as UCA as it relates to being able to compete in the conference for championships. UCA and A&M-CC have the drive to improve their programs across the board. Tarleton St on the otherhand does not.

Only advantage of Tarleton St over A&M-CC is football. And honestly, we have UCA, SFA, SHSU, TxSt, SELA, Nicholls, NWST and McNeese. That's four SLC games each weekend. I think the conference is fine, especially with all other SLC components (even A&M-CC) talking football to some degree...

TT, you got some splainin' to do...

You are correct when you say Tarleton would be in the same boat as UCA, in the fact that they are transitioning from D2 to D1.

However, Tarleton consitantly finishes on (or near) the top of the LSC in many of the sports they participate in.

Our football team normally picked as one of the top in conference. Our Mens BB team is normally picked as one of the top teams in the NATION.

I admit our facilties need some improvement and that is slowly happening, they will improve as the student enrollment does.

What I don't understand is how you can say we don't want to improve across the board. Isn't the goal of every athletic department to improve their teams every season?

EDIT- Also we would have made a logical Travel partner for UTA as opposed to TXST.

Kats89 was saying UCA is fine, but wasn't thrilled with A&M-CC...

How can you compare A&M-CC to Tarleton? A&M-CC has better facilities and a proven Div I track record. Tarleton may have done something at the Div II level, but not the track record of A&M-CC and definitely not the media market...

Never entirely compared UCA to Tarleton outside of having the drive. UCA has really been talking about their commitment to improve their facilities, even without Div I.

Tarleton, what facilities do they have in store? Their gym is not up to Div I standards. I've seen better NAIA facilities. Baseball field looks as bad as SHSU's old park. UCA is talking up a new ballpark and already have designs drawn up by a company named Renshaw Firm.

TT,

When UTSA gets ready to leave for CUSA, WAC, Sun Belt, etc., in the next couple of years (listening to their Schnellenberger-like talk about adding football) I'm sure Tarleton State will make a fine addition.

Kind of disappointed that Tarleton wasn't added, but not knowing who else would have been a quality school to add (Centenary and UTPA doesn't do it for me), I'm not surprised.

I'm glad to see Texas A&M - Country Club find a conference. Theyt don't seem to have the baggage that UT - Pan American Airlines did.

Agreed. Tarleton State would be a fine addition. They now have the time to get their act together, pump some more money into their athletic program and get their facilities up to par.

Not thrilled with Centenary or UTPA. Dallas Baptist would be someone to keep in the back of mind depending what happens with their athletic program in the next five to ten years. It's a great market obviously, an instant traveling partner for UT-Arlington and rival. Very interested to see what they do...

Too large of a conference. I would think that a 14-team conference may scare some of our members away. SLC should not be larger than 12...

Tex A&M-CC brings in a very good market for the SLC.. Corpus Christi is virtually untapped for major college athletics and this is an opportunity for that market to see higher quality opponents at home and on tv on a regular basis, not to mention possibly Football down the road.
Just like little Rock, new markets of this size will help the conference exposure in all sports, even in the daily news media in those cities..

Isles move up by going South
A&M-Corpus Christi to face pros, cons of conference affiliation
By Lee Goddard Caller-Times
July 2, 2006

It happens maybe once - sometimes a couple of times - if a university's athletic department is fortunate.

Earning conference affiliation. It's the goal for every independent. As Texas A&M-Corpus Christi formally fanned out of the independent ranks to the Southland Conference Saturday, the school can take some advice from those who have been there - including its own men's basketball coach.

Ronnie Arrow coached in the Sun Belt Conference when at South Alabama and has a feel for what it takes to make the most of a conference affiliation.

But there are five other programs in the past 15 years that have made the jump from outright Division I independent to conference membership, not just non-Division I schools serving a probationary stop in the Division I independent ranks on the way to an already-secured conference affiliation.

Brian Teter Named Director of Athletics at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi

July 3, 2006

FRISCO, Texas - President Flavius Killebrew announced today that Brian Teter has accepted the position of director of athletics at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Teter comes from the University of Cincinnati where he was an associate athletics director.

"Brian Teter exemplifies the type of leadership we have been seeking to lead us into this new, exciting era of Islander athletics," said Killebrew. "With the University's entrance into the Southland Conference, the athletics program is poised to make its mark in NCAA Division I sports and sustain the University's reputation for excellence that our academic and research programs have already established."

As associate athletics director at the University of Cincinnati, Teter's duties included coordinating media relations, developing marketing and promotional plans, corporate sponsorships, licensing, and serving as a liaison to the president's office. He graduated from Illinois State University in 1985 with a degree in mass communications and, after earning a master's in athletic administration in 1987, was named ISU's assistant sports information director.

In 1990 he became an assistant in the sports information departments at Indiana University and from 1991 through 1994 served as sports information director at Miami (Ohio) University. After nine years as associate commissioner of Conference USA, he joined the University of Cincinnati staff in 2003.
