I think they should play this song instead of the star spangled banner for any American gold medalists. It's in London, they love the f-bomb over there.

No, U.S. activity today as the men didn't qualify for soccer...if only the Olympic soccer tournament was as wide open as the Olympic basketball tournament. I hate that we can't have our real varsity squad available to play in these games...not that I disagree with only the U-23's playing, but I wish it would be the same for all organized pro team sports.
If we had our varsity, we would be able to not only play in the tournament but also make some damn noise.

Our U-23 team should be strong enough on their own to qualify. In the context of American soccer, their failure to do so for this Olympics is extremely disappointing and a gross underachievement
As for the senior teams playing, it's too difficult at this point to convince the clubs (FIFA might not mind) to let those players go in an already congested calendar. Remember that many of Europe's best just finished playing the Euros, which took place shortly after the end of the club season, while the Olympics run right up to the start of the coming campaign. It's a nice experience for the U-23s, and there are plenty of very very good players younger than 23 in this tournament

The full US Men's National Team got spanked by the Brazilian Olympic team several weeks ago. Wouldn't matter - US Men not ready to compete with the rest of the world.

Soccer fans in America beating up on American soccer remind me of FCS alumns who only cheer for FBS schools.
Sure Brazil "spanked" us in a friendly, but we also beat Euro 2012 runner up Italy in a friendly. Sure there was no Balotelli, but most of the big names were there.
Is US soccer up there with Spain, Germany, Brazil et al? No. But to say we couldn't compete is silly.

Any sport that already has high commercial success either with professional tours or professional leagues on multiple continents should be banned from the olympics.
Weightlifting, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling. That's the true olympics.
I'd get rid of: basketball, boxing, cycling, soccer, sailing, table tennis, tennis, volleyball. All disciplines.

I was impressed with the opening ceremonies last night. Pretty cool how they did it and with the Queen Mum parachuting in with James Bond. Now for two weeks of some really good sports coverage from London !

Indeed. Remember beating Spain's A-team in the 2009 Confederations Cup (only knock-out stage loss for the Spaniards since 2006 WC)?
And really, based on what I saw against Brazil, there is plenty of room for optimism. The US (for once in their recent existence) looked dangerous at moments against a good Brazil team. The scoreline was misleading, though Brazil was a better team. Still, being worse than Brazil isn't anything to get too upset about

Basketball has got to go...so boring and uncompetitive...I support the NBA owner's stance...let's either let it be amatuer's or simply drop the sport.

Yeah I didn't watch it but Team USA trounced Nigeria by 83 points shattering many Olympic records on its way to a 156-73 annihilation of the Nigerian team. Now they are being called out about running up the score. Hell starters were done playing before the first half was over and still they hammered them. Talk about a snoozer.

At the end they were just milking the clock and chucking up threes before the buzzer, its not their fault they went in.
Normally I hate Coach K, but he did have a good point when asked about it:
"You have to take a shot every 24 seconds," Krzyzewski said, "and the shots we took happened to be hit."
He benched Kobe and Lebron at the half. Carmelo played all of 14 minutes and earned a seat after hitting 10 3's. What more can he do?

Full agree. I've have no interest in watching the professionals. I was really into the Olympics years ago when true amateurism was on display. I've only had a passing interest for the several Games.

You mean American amateurs, right?
I'm pretty sure I don't want to watch a set of athletic events where the athletes train for them on the side.

Manteo Mitchell breaks leg during race but makes sure USA qualifies for 4x400 relay
Runner Manteo Mitchell said he "felt" and "heard" his fibula breaking midway through his lead-off leg of the 4x400-meter relay Thursday morning in qualifying heats. He kept running, going another 200 meters and handing off the baton to Joshua Mance. The U.S. went on to finish second in the heat, advancing to the final Friday night.
America would not have kept its medal hopes alive in the event without the effort of Mitchell. His injury was diagnosed after the race by team doctor Bob Adams: broken left fibula.
"I knew if I finished strong we could still get it [the baton] around," Mitchell said. "I saw Josh Mance motioning me in for me to hand it off to him, which lifted me. I didn't want to let those three guys down, or the team down, so I just ran on it. It hurt so bad. I'm pretty amazed that I still split 45 seconds on a broken leg."
Mitchell believes he initially injured the leg a few days ago in the Olympic Village when he slipped on a stairway.
"Three days ago I was going up the stairs and I kind of missed one and landed awkwardly," said the 25-year-old from Cullowhee, N.C. "I got treatment and I was fine. I did workouts, and when I warmed up today I felt really well. I felt I could go 44 [seconds]-low."
But once the race started, Mitchell knew something was wrong.
"I got out pretty slow, but I picked it up, and when I got to the 100-meter mark it felt weird," he said. "I was thinking I just didn't feel right. As soon as I took the first step past the 200-meter mark, I felt it break. I heard it. I even put out a little war cry, but the crowd was so loud you couldn't hear it. I wanted to just lie down. It felt like somebody literally just snapped my leg in half."
Somehow, he finished the race. Now the U.S. must put together a relay without Mitchell or its best 400-meter runner, LaShawn Merritt, who pulled up injured in the heats of the individual 400. Using members of the 400 hurdle contingent is a strong possibility.
Sucks our guy broke his leg but impressive that he finished the race and the team finished second.
