View Full Version : The late Eddie Robinson regains wins record

What happens when a record gets broken?
Kai Burrell thought he knew.
For years, Eddie Robinson — his coach, the Grambling icon who turned a small rural Louisiana university into the premier destination for black college football players — held the all-time record for wins in Division I football, piling up 408 victories from 1941-97.
But when Robinson lost the record to Joe Paterno last year, Burrell shrugged.
“I was thinking, if anybody does break coach Rob’s record, it’s good that it’s Joe Paterno,” said Burrell, a defensive lineman at Grambling from 1990-94. “That was how I felt at the time.”
Times changed.
Everything changed.

Well..technically Grambling wasn't DI until the late 70s...so that diminishes his wins at the D1 level...but I guess that's just a matter of semantics.

Wasn't Grambling on probation in the 90's? Did they not vacate Robinson's wins during that time?

No he just cheated then..apparently not enough for the NCAA to truly care about.

As previously stated, Robinson only has 155-ish wins at D1 level

The problem is that Grambling wasn't a University Division/Division 1 college until 1977 and weren't even an accredited college the first few years he was coaching. He only had 154 of his wins at the D1 level, but they included all wins at the highest level you competed. If he coached and won 1 game at the FBS, they'd be giving him credit for 408 wins at 1A, if he had retired before the school became accredited, they'd record it as he never coached a game. It's still not correct either way, but that's how they record it.
superman7515
July 24th, 2012, 10:18 PM
Speaking of which, if you look at the NCAA records, Jim Tressel is listed as #7 in FCS and #9 in FBS history. His FBS record includes all his wins at Youngstown State and his FCS records include all his wins at Ohio State. Clearly separate divisions, but the NCAA lumps all the wins together and doesn't bother to break it down.

As long as everyone in the division has an even playing field, a win is a win in my book. I mean i would regard a D-III win over another D-III school higher than a D-I over a D-2 or even higher than an FBS beating an FCS team.

OK, I'll bite...
So Eddie Robinson, while coaching at Grambling was put on NCAA probation now that questions the validity of his all time wins to some of you right?
Well, what about Bobby Bowden's tenure while coaching at Florida State when his teams were placed on NCAA probation:
Florida State Gets 4 Years Probation
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida State received four years’ probation from the NCAA on Friday and will lose scholarships in football and may forfeit games because of a widespread academic cheating scandal involving all 10 sports.
The NCAA report says 61 Florida State athletes cheated on an online test from the fall of 2006 through summer 2007 or received improper help from staffers who provided them with answers to the exam and typed papers for them.
Football coach Bobby Bowden, whose 382 wins are one behind Penn State’s Joe Paterno for the most all-time among major college coaches, could have several victories taken away if players participated after their involvement in the cheating.
The university immediately issued a release that it would challenge any attempt to strip the school of any victories or championships.
http://www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/2009-03-06/florida-state-gets-4-years-probation
Also, what about the big scandal at Florida State aka "Free Shoes University" back in 1993. Players were kicked off the program/school because of the improper benifits:
"...the With memories reignited of the infamous 1993 Foot Locker scandal involving a shopping spree by seven FSU football players, the university president's understated response was nothing less than curious"
Furthermore, I could care less who holds this "record" it makes me sleep no less at night.
In otherwords, call it both ways gentlemen.

It sort of makes sense to me. The "win at all costs" line in Emmert's address as part of the problem at Penn State in motivating these guys to cover up a very distasteful way of doing things by one of their own.
Joe has some of the blame like it or not. So does the administration. Take away all the wins since the cover up and you have definitely let anyone know in the future that this should not motivate you to cover **** up.

Does this END all the debate:
In my opinion, not really. Only 154 of his 408 wins actually occurred at the D1 level. The others were either as an unaccredited college or a Division 2/College Division school. As I said before, if he had retired after 5 years, the NCAA would say he never coached a game because the school was not accredited. If he retired in 1975, he would be the winningest D2 coach ever (which he really is). But the NCAA doesn't bother to break down wins when they look at coaching records. That's why Tressel & The Sweater Vests is listed in the top 10 for FCS & FBS, because they lumped all the wins together instead of actually breaking them down. His wins at Youngstown State count for his FBS record, his wins at Ohio State count for his FCS record. There's a pretty big difference (no offense YSU fans) between Youngstown State and Ohio State. I say the same thing about Tubby Raymond, he's shown as 300 wins D1 wins, but that's not correct. Delaware didn't move up to D1 until 1980, and all of his wins before then were as a D2/College Division coach. Same goes for Bobby Bowden and his time at Samford. A win is a win, but I can't be the mayor of Dallas for 8 years and then be President of the United States for 8 years and say I was President for 16 years because there's clearly a difference in the levels. The reality of the situation is he is not the winningest D1 coach and it's a pretty wide margin.

Sure it is but there are no perfect solutions. There is always collateral damage. Not a whole lot can be done about that except to blame the administrators, and anyone involved with covering up for the outcome that the innocent people suffer for this. It's easy to blame the NCAA but the blame for this outcome belongs with those in charge at Penn State.
The players have the experience they made for themselves and the good feelings from winning those games and that can't be taken away by a record book. Their careers can't be taken away, their diplomas, etc. so it's about good as it can be considering the overall.

No because you were dead wrong on ALL COUNTS including not admitting your fixation about sex with young boys. I know it may be common where you come from but I don't find it funny.
He is consumed with little boys and sex. His perversion is sickening.

Nope unlike you, I've never molested little boys or been molested. If you want to spill your guts, somebody on here would be glad to listen....and then have you arrested if you are the former. :D

Have you tested positive? If so you shouldn't be around the youth leagues. On second thought, you shouldn't be around them anyway. xcoffeex

Huh? I'm the power that be's P88 and I didn't threaten you with anything did I?
I didn't realize that this had turned into an ugly little two man back and forth and probably should have moved it to smack but saw it late and then just checked it again.
I'll move it to smack and you guys can carry on all you want to. I am being sincere when I say thanks for letting off the gas before going any further though. I don't mind us all having a good spat but this one sort of went well over the FCS Discussion board type of arguments.xlolx
Seriously, did I pm or email you on something?

Penn State did not cheat, ergo Joe Pa is still the coach with the most wins. I don't really care what the NCAA has about it.

I'm not even gonna pretend that this could not have been the case. I've tried to heed this advice but can't even be sure if I have or not.
I've got a friend that is a member here that got woke up and helped into his house at about 3 am this last weekend when he was found "sleeping" under a tree in the front yard.
I then told him of a similar situation I had experienced years back involving a chilly night on a trampoline in front of some chicks house.
poop happens man.

My sincerest apologies ursus. Obviously you're eons above the last regime.
I think it highly required that heath and that other smacker apologize for the disrespect as well. If they do not apologize to you, I will make their posting life here a semi-nightmare.

Ah, no apologies necessary. I just hope y'all understand if I feel things are taking a turn for the worse that I may need to move it off to the smack board. Hell I ain't gonna be one to gripe about having a tussle cuz I do it myself all the time.
I thank you for the consideration Panther88. Tip of he cap to you.xthumbsupx
