View Full Version : CONTEST: What Band/Song Best Represents Your Conference

I can think of a couple for the Big Sky but wanted to see what you guys got?
I"m looking for real responses here and not just the same old smack bs where someone from the SoCon, MVFC, or the BSC puts up "I'm a loser baby" or some **** like that about another conference.
I will pick my two favorites for each conference and run a poll to see which one you guys think is best and the winner gets a Phil Steele Magazine sent to them.
If you have more than one song throw it up cuz there isn't a limit to it.
Remember this is YOUR CONFERENCE not just YOUR TEAM.

Wow! Some serious quality right off the bat fella's!
Supe, that is actually one that I was thinking of for CAA.:D
It's the soundtrack for 1/2 of the App/MT game in 2009 on a video and it works pretty well there too considering the Irish in Montana.

I like darell a lot but I gotta agree that's sort of embarrassing.xlolx
One of the first thoughts I had was "who's gonna be the one to put up some Queen and hack this up beyong belief"...I was pretty sure it would be Grizo.
Anyway, there are some really good picks and some that really miss the mark. I didn't explain real well but the number of hooks the thing has to your region (not hooks in the song) go a long way for me on this.
Hooks I'm refering to...
1. Is the music associated with your region/conference...doesn't have to be popular music.
2. Does the music come from someone home grown in your region/conference.
3. Is it somehow culturally related to your conference, teams, etc...
ODU Smitty had a band that must be from his area but I didn't get how that song represented the CAA in any way.xconfusedx
Maybe it's just because I know Dropkicks better but man that one seemed a lot closer to the nail on the head to me.
I'm sort of surprised that Pearl Jam hasn't been thrown up for BSC with members from Cal, MT, and the home base being WA with a huge following everywhere but in particular the Oregon, WA, MT, CA, link. That's definitely associated with this region as well as a whole lot of other of that style of music.
Where's my MLB Grizo?

Where's my MLB Grizo?
For mine:
1. Hip Hop is big in the urban South (60% of our schools are urban)
2. Is my only no, but it was a popular song the bands used to play
3. It's related to the league because the song is about making popular choices, not practical ones. Which is something that I feel is a problem with the league. So for me it fits to a T, although it's hard for others to see it. Should have posted this with the video.

Ursus-
The Delaware fan actually got the reference. I don't think he liked it, but he got it.
The song, "You're Not Good Looking Enough to Be a Bitch" is a reference to the ruling from the CAA not to allow ODU (or Ga State for that matter) to compete in team sports in the 2012-2013 athletic season. VCU avoided this fate by moving immediately.
It was a jab that the CAA has been "bitchy" to the teams that are moving onward and upward.

Yours makes the connection on multiple levels Jag and I got that right away. Hell, it's tough to hit all the hooks but I was trying to give some indication of what I was looking for so it wasn't just some random phrase in a pop song that someone thinks makes the connection.

No playoff wins in the last decade, but back in the day they made the semifinals as recently as 1999 before losing to Youngstown State and the Sweater Vests and won the first 1AA/FCS national championship back in the 70's. Not as successful anymore, but every now and then they'll hang in for a whole game and put a scare into one of the larger conference schools in the playoffs (2004 Hampton vs William & Mary, 2006 Hampton vs New Hampshire, 2009 SC State vs App State).

Yes, yes and kind of.
The Allman Brothers Band and Outkast are both the standard of Southern music in their respective genres (don't even give me that Skynyrd crap because Gregg, Duane, Dickey and co. could play the blues in circles around those fools), all hail from SoCon land and while they are not directly related culturally to any SoCon team, I can guarantee that most SoCon athletes over the past few decades have grown up listening to one or the other!
As for the choice of songs, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and Southbound just seemed the most appropriate because I'll be damned if I was going to put in a song about Statesboro, no matter how much it rocks!

Please excuse me if I haven't met your usual low standard(s), but I've been too busy following the IWFL Western Championship race to think that anything you have to say to me has any meaning, or consequence!
I've got a ton of stories to tell...a ton of 'em! Not the least of which is how I spent an evening with Alice in Chains at The Rhino in Missoula, back in the day! When I called you, you told me that you were "too busy" recuperating from a questionable sprained ankle to show up!

Anyhoo, I know a few guys in this group, and one of them is from Big Sandy, Montana. I think this song is somewhat appropriate for the BSC.
Well other than being a story thief and then not telling why it has relevance it's a pretty damn good pick as far as the group goes. Shangrila or maybe even Stargazer would have been stronger picks as far as title or lyrically but it's the best so far from a BSC standpoint.

Or for Villanova you can go old school with Jim Croce - Bad Bad Leroy Brown

Just flat out killin' it. I'm not much of a Toby Keith fan but it's a good hook. GT & The Destroyers played in a great little theatre a few years back here in Missoula, I always liked him but after that show I was an even bigger fan cuz the dude just flat kicks it in. Cumbersome has been a favorite since it came out.

I don't listen to any country music, but it was that or Pat Croce for Villanova, so I figured HailSzczur would lean more towards Toby Keith, haha.

Story thief, huh?!!? I prefer to be called a "story embellisher"!
I got the location, band, and body part correct! That's 3 for 3 in my book, and a lot more accurate than I usually am!
You're right! And I can't argue the fact that Shangrila and Stargazer would have been better choices, but I was too busy embellishing to consider them at the time...my bad!
After heavy thought, and some minor soul searching, considering all that's happened to the Griz in the off season, I've decided to pick another song...hopefully, the Griz and the BSC will be able to heed the title of said song!

Great choice and I get the story on it well. When the thread is about "your team" and not "your conference" it would be a great selection. Why am I having so much trouble getting that part through to you? Hell we even talked in person about this and I can't seem to make you understand this?
Honestly, am I not being clear that isn't about one team?

For the Northeast Conference, the Eagles' "New Kid in Town" could be the right title, but the song itself doesn't work.
The Ivy League, OTOH, should go with The Boss

Not exactly seeing the "hooks" and you are not explaining them. I see some surface message that doesn't mean a whole lot Gil.
Can you help me with how the are relatable other than a title or small lyric sample?
I sort of expected Houndawg to see this and knock it out of the park for the MVFC but never did see him.

Free for All, basically top to bottom, anyone could win.
Old Man River is basically geographic
Smokin, the MVFC has the National Champion
Breakin my Heart is an in your face
........but being I had to explain, need to come up with somethin better. :)

Gil, you just didn't see my temper tantrum about hacky **** people were throwing up and what I was actually looking for. If any those songs had that encompassing description you would have a keeper and a legit entry.
Go check some of the work asumike and superman did. They have a tendency to "get it" even when I wasn't being absolutely clear about what I was looking for.
You were right about one thing though. Those are not good.xlolx

No "Cowboys from Hell" for the Southland? :D
That actually wasn't bad at all considering their roots, and although the song title leads one to single out a specific team from a different state in the region it's at least from their conference footprint.
You might very well get the nod considering the absolute lack of SLC input and with the choices they have available that would be an embarassment for those conference members.
It's not a bad choice by any means though.

1. Is the music associated with your region/conference...doesn't have to be popular music.
2. Does the music come from someone home grown in your region/conference.
3. Is it somehow culturally related to your conference, teams, etc...
Several Mellancamp songs could follow these points.
