View Full Version : My Challenge to AGS
TheRevSFA
July 2nd, 2012, 09:47 AM
Good Morning All,
I am issuing a challenge to all of the fine posters at AGS. As some of you may know, FormerPokeCenter is riding in the 24 hours of Booty ride in Atlanta in October. Some you may not be aware that this ride is to help raise money and awareness for Cancer research and prevention. This is a big deal to me, seeing as how Cancer, specifically Pancreatic Cancer, runs in my family.
I have donated to FPC's team. I know Cleets has as well. My challenge to all AGS posters is to donate 10 dollars (or more) to the cause. If this initiative can raise over 2k, FPC is going to have to ride in a Barack Obama shirt of my choosing. However, I would like to see how much we can raise, and have him represent all of the schools who had their fans, alumni, etc donate.
If you donate, on your personal note, please list that this is part of The Rev's AGS challenge.
I'm not one to go trying to raise money for causes. I tend to quietly donate and such, but I feel strongly about this ride, and I hope you consider dropping a bit of coin to help with something that affects millions both directly and indirectly.
Here is the link to Jay's (FPC's) page. If you click on "Support Jay", it will take you straight to a donation page.
Like I said, I have donated. Will you?

Rev, you rock! That's a great post. I appreciate the help. I realize that I'm a prick on most of the political dicussion and on pretty much anything that has to do with Georgia State or the University of Chapel Hill at Charlotte, but what's interesting is both of those are in the heart of Booty Country. Charlotte is where the ride got started and it's a pretty big deal there....It's gaining traction in Atlanta and several worthy Atlanta-based charities, including the cancer wing at Children's Hospital of Atlanta are supported. Though LiveSTRONG no longer directly supports research (because the American Cancer Society does that so much more effectively and robustly) there are research projects supported by the 24 Hours of Booty.
It's a great event. If any of you are bicyclists and interested in riding, let me know. You can ride with us or form a team of your own....
All donations are tax deductible!
Thanks for any help you guys could provide!

FPC, I commend you for taking action for such a great cause xsmileyclapx. I hope you reach your overall goal, and I hope fellow AGSer help us meet the Rev's challenge. Unfortunately I didn't read his first post that well and forgot to list my donation as part of The Rev's AGS challenge in the personal note section :o xbangx. Please include it as part of the money raised by AGS. It would be a shame if we missed the goal because I can't follow direction, but hopefully the AGS community blows way beyond the challenge amount.

Wow! $300.00 in the first day of the challenge, plus TheRev's $75.00 personal contribution and it looks like I'm not as far away from wearing that Teeshirt and getting photographed as I'd like! ;)
The deal that I had with Northwestern, SELA, Sam Houston, et al, is that $200.00 worth of donations gets me in a school shirt for a portion of the ride, with photographic proof that you've got representation at the event! So...same deal applies in this little contest....Just send me a shirt! I'm a 2XL, FYI ;)

24 hours of booty. Sounds like a good porno
The first team that I was on, was named - in jest - after a 1992misunderstanding one night in a Harlingen, Texas nightclub - after the club manager tried to kick me, my girlfriend and her two visiting chick friends who were in from Venice, California, out of the establishment...
All three of the girls were decked out in miniskirts and high heels...and, I was weeding out the undesirables who came to try to talk to them....the manager pulled me aside and suggested that i needed to take my "girls" and go work another bar, because he didn't need our kind of "action" in his club. It took a second, but I realized that he was accusing them of being hookers and me being the pimp! So, we had a rather heated discussion, until the owner of the place, who I knew, came in and defused it...Anyway, over time, my 15 minutes of pimpness has become a favorite youthful war story that me and my "working girls" have told over time. One of the girls, Ann Hartline, was diagnosed with a midbrain tumor and is the reason I ride.
So, when we started this little venture, there was only one appropriate name "The Harlingen Hookers"....we only raised about $4k as a team that year. One of my buddies put in perspective for me.
"I can't put that on a credit card! My wife will kill me if she sees "24 Hours of Booty: Harlingen Hookers" on my bill!
So, the next year, we joined up with Team Pirate Treasure ;)
Here's a link to a FB Note, with images, about the first ride and the people involved ;) One of the guys who rode with me, Billy Craddock, is - himself - a cancer survivor and is Doc's (McNeese72 ) brother-in-law....
https://www.facebook.com/notes/jay-gallagher/riding-to-raise-money-for-cancer-research/259359198266
To show you what kinda guy Doc is, he'd already donated substantially to his brother-in-law's ride when he realized that we were involved in the same event, and then he donated substantially to me, too!
Anyway, I really appreciate the support.....I'll post an update to the monetary totals and individual donations in just a few minutes! ;)

I'm just having a little bit of fun with The Rev on the Obama thing, just like he's having a bit of fun with me on having to wconsear that shirt....however, I DID get a donation from a conservative Demon fan who wants his in the NObama category, so I think now we're up to $225.00 against the shirt! ;) Personally, I hope it escalates into a bidding war because that just means more money donated!
Rev's right about the ride, it's for Survivorship, Awareness and Research....the tee-shirts, etc., are just to make it fun...
On a more somber note, if you've donated and you'd like me to memorialize somebody that you've lost to Cancer, please drop me a line and let me know your loved one's name. I keep a roll of people that I ride for on me when I'm on the bike. They're with me on the route the entire time. If you want to send a picture, please do. I usually put up a Cairn of sorts with photos and short biographies of the people I ride for right in front of my tent. A lot of people do that to personalize why we ride...
Last year, one of my favorite aspects of the ride is that a hurricane cancelled the Columbia Maryland ride and my team invited members of another pirate themed team down to ride with us. They were the second largest team in the organization. They all elected to participate in a Triathlon that weekend to honor one of their teammembers who succumbed to cancer two weeks after their ride. I was asked to carry their team's list of honorees, which was over 400 people, as I rode the loop. I was living up to my obligation to wear a Northwestern Demon shirt at the time I was asked to do that....I took a photo of me and our team's captain in front of the other team's list, which is what I gave to the Demons as provenance that I'd lived up to my end of the deal....anyway....if you lost somebody to cancer, please let me know and I'll include them on the list of people that I ride with...it's a token gesture, I know, but it's pretty powerful as you're thinking about it on the ride.....

Wow..another thread for Republicans vs Democrats? Why didn't I make this a NDSU or App State challenge then?
What a fantastic idea, pitting school against school, or conference against conference to see who can raise the most money?? ;)
Here's an idea....this year, since you've gotten the ball rolling here on Cancer, then let's go with it...next year, try MS or the American Heart Association...or the Special Olympics...or...whatever charity works....figure out ways to make the fundraising and competition fun.... ;)
Okay...the original deal was that if you got 2k, I'd WEAR the shirt.....I'm not gonna try to change that....instead, what I'd like to do is to make the same offer to the conservative side of the house....2k in donations there, and I'll wear a Romney shirt during the ride...you guys specify the miles...I believe you and I agreed on 100 miles in the Obama shirt if you raised the 2k....a deal's a deal....if enough Romney supporters raise 2k, I'll wear a Romney shirt for the same same number of miles....that means, I'm gonna be riding my *** off! ;)
I ride the parade lap in the team jersey, then I usually change through the other shirts based on the commitment....at sunrise on Sunday, I generally switch over to the yellow jersey (assuming I raise enough again this year!) for a bit, before switching back to the shirts I'm committed to wear....This year, it could get UGLY for me on the amount of miles I have to put in to meet the commitments! ;) A century ride (100 miles) generally takes me about 7 hours....so....200 miles would be about 14 hours, probably closer to 15-16 factoring in fatigue and bathroom breaks.....then there are food breaks, naps, etc...so..here's a chance to really wear my *** out and make me work ;)

-JDRF, since my wife is a type 1 diabetic

-American Heart Association, since my father in law died of heart issues.
I'm actually going to walk (I think) in PurpleStride in November, in memory of a friend that passed away in May...My wife and I might do JDRF walk in Houston..not sure if we are doing it this year or taking a year off

You're missing the main points of this
1) it's for Cancer Research and Awareness
2) I offered to help FPC to raise 2k of his goal. As members of AGS, we should help other members out...and did I mention it's for Cancer Research and Awareness?
Oh, I'm not missing anything. My father died with cancer. My husband is a cancer survivor. I was simply stirring up, hopefully, a donation race. I would love for FPC to raise a bazillion dollars for a cure to be found for cancer so no one has to ride again. My donation was purely from the heart.

Seriously, thanks to everybody who's donated! The Booty Site is pretty cool...you can set up recurring donations, even for small amounts...$5.00, $10.00, whatever to run for a long or as little as you want....
Here's a smattering of pictures from last year's ride...
Team picture....Team Pirate Treasure raised over $80,000 last year, with little or NO corporate matching funds. If you work for a company that matches, please consider applying for matching funds....it's a great way to leverage your donation....My personal fundraising was $7,800 and some change, but I had some late donations come in after the deadline that pushed me to over $8,000...and I pushed some donations over to Doc's brother in law who was a few dollars short of a a major fundraising goal ;)...For the last three years, I'm right at $15k, I think....

Versus commentator, Bob "Bobke" Roll, who normally provides the color analysis for the Tour De France, and who was Lance Armstrong's first training partner when he began his comeback attempt after cancer surgery....We made Bobke an honorary Pirate, and he rode some of the way in his jersey with us...
Any guesses what FCS city he started his comeback in??? ;)

I donated the Pin back to our bike team and you can expect that it's going to be a prize in a fundraising competition a little bit later in the year....I'll post details, but suffice it to say, it'll be the only Pinarello in the world with Lance Armstrong's signature on it ;) He couldn't sign it directly because it's not a TREK, but....he could sign THIS for us at The Ride For The Roses in Austin ;)
https://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/318331_2456873496889_2067361725_n.jpg
And, we got Bobke's signature on it, too!
Here's a pic of the names of the honorees from the Krased Mauraders, a Pirate based team in Columbia, MD. After a hurricane washed out there ride, we invited them down and I ultimately go to carry their honorees around the course....I was wearing my spiffy Northwestern shirt at the time! ;)

And, Thanks to NoDAK4Ever for HIS second donation to the 24 HOB this year! I gave you a very nice shout out on FB! And, if you've noticed, I haven't said anything derogatory about you since your first donation! ;)
Thanks for you support! We may not see eye to eye politically, but I'm glad we agree on the need to eradicate cancer! Thanks NoDak, you rock!
EDIT: I'll proudly wear the shirt and post the photos as proof!
Thanks!

To let anyone that hasn't been following along know...if you are donating on behalf of TheRev's challenge and adding to the total set your donation will count as a donation here and get you a Donor bar as a small added bonus to the good feeling of helping out some members of this community trying to do something good.

Cool, I need their AGS usernames so let me know if/when you have those. If you could just copy & paste the name from a quote or the name exactly as it is on the board because you wouldn't believe how f'n picky this search is to get right to a user and change his account.
For instance "The RevSFA" comes back as "no user with that name". Doesn't even give a list of names that are close or smilar.

So is that part of TheRev's challenge? Is it tough to post the running total for TheRev when you update on here FPC...if it's a lot of work don't worry about it but was just looking for a way I could easily recognize people throwing in on his challenge.

29 donations for a total of $1231.00....additionally, McNeese75 donated $100.00 for the third year in a row today, but I doubt it's part of TheRev's challenge, since he's not an Obama fan! ;)
All totaled, AGS posters have donated well over 2k so far...but, some of that has been McNeese, SELA and Northwestern posters who've serially donated through the years...
