Also posting a surprising win was Brian Johnson in the men's long jump. The two-time U.S. indoor champion leaped 8.10m/26-7 to relegate world and Olympic champion Dwight Phillips to second (8.08m/26-6.25) and defending U.S. outdoor champion Miguel Pate to third (7.96m/26-1.5).

Only surprise in USA track and field is when a fair amount of athletes pass the drug tests...

I'm a big T&F fan, but I've definitely lost my faith in the sport reading the steroids book by those two SF Chronicle reports on Bonds and BALCO. Lots of information shared on Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery, CJ Hunter, Dwain Chambers and company...US T&F needs a few more years to cleanse itself...

Not sure how surprising it was considering he's a two-time indoor champion (so he should've been considered a contender) and the fact as I stated above, the only surprises about US Track and Field are when a lot of athletes make it through the drug test. Track and field in the US has really lost it's glamour thanks to cheats like Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery, Kellie White and CJ Hunter...
