Manny Michel, a veteran of the coach*ing ranks, is in his third season heading up the Cowboy defensive line.

He previously served as co-defensive coordinator at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He’s beginning his 28th year as a football coach.

Here at McNeese he has been a guiding force behind the rise of Desmund Lighten as a nationally ranked defensive end. A native of Metairie, Michel spent 10 seasons as a member of the ULM staff where he worked with both Bobby Keasler and Mike Collins. He has been a defensive line coach at most of his stops, having started his coaching career in 1985 at Cumberland (TN) County High School.

Michel served as the defensive line coach at John Curtis High, his alma mater, from 1986 to 1994 and at Nicholls State from 1995 to 1998. He joined the ULM staff in 1999.

At John Curtis, he helped lead that team to four state titles.. At ULM, he coached such all-conference performers as Donald Malveaux (2001), John Thompson (2002), Brandon Guillory (2004, 2005), David Cooper (2007) and Aaron Morgan (2007). His 2007 team led the Sun Belt Conference in run defense.

As an athlete, he played on the first two state championship teams at John Curtis High and he was a four year starter at Tennessee Tech.
