The only player in University of North Dakota
football history to have his uniform number
retired, Cando, N.D., native Dave Osborn lettered
two years for the Fighting Sioux in 1963 and 1964,
when he led UND to back-to-back wins over North
Dakota State. He was a first-year All-North Central
Conference selection in 1964.
Osborn scored four touchdowns in the first game
he started for the Sioux and in the last game he
played for UND. He set the Sioux record for best
single-game rushing average at 16.8 yards per
carry when he ran the ball 12 times for 202 yards
vs. Minnesota-Duluth on Sept. 14, 1963.
He scored 10 touchdowns in 1964 and led the
Fighting Sioux to a share of the North Central
Conference title before moving on to a stellar NFL
career with the Minnesota Vikings.
While with the Vikings, Osborn set the franchise
record with 972 rushing yards in 1967. He ranked
sixth among active rushers in the NFC at the

Only one number (79) has ever been retired in North Dakota State football history. It belonged to defensive tackle Paul Allen Bothof who played for the Bison from 1968 through 1970.

A two-year starter and an all-conference selection in 1970, the 6-foot-6, 245-pound giant was called the "best-looking football player in this game" by a pro scout at the 1969 Camellia Bowl at the end of his junior season.

But Bothof's career came to a tragic end on Sunday, October 25, 1970, two weeks before the end of the regular season, as he was the victim of an accidental shooting while hunting.

No player has ever worn that jersey number for the Bison since.

One at Holy Cross #25 Bill Osmanski


The only football jersey number ever retired
by the College of the Holy Cross is
the No. 25, worn by “Bullet” Bill Osmanski.
A member of the College Football Hall
of Fame, Osmanski scored touchdowns on
his first carry as a Crusader (against Bates
in 1936) and his last (against Boston College
in 1938). Osmanski went on to play
several seasons for the Chicago Bears in
the National Football League, and later returned
to Worcester to coach the Crusaders
from 1948-1949.

10 other players are in the Ring of Honor, started a couple years ago, that recognizes the players without retiring their numbers. 3 more will be added prior to the game vs. UNH on August 30.

This is an interesting question. Furman has as storied a football tradition as just about any school in the FCS, but to my knowledge, they don't have any retired jerseys.

Well, let me put it this way. I have asked the question before and never gotten a good answer on it, nor have I ever heard tell of it. At the very least, Furman does not display retired jerseys to the public if they have them. You have several guys that were among the great players in SoCon and FCS history in Jerome Felton and Ingle Martin, and both of their numbers are still routinely worn by current players. The one guy I can't seem to confirm is Louis Ivory. I don't recall a player wearing #34, but that may just be a coincidence.

Furman does plan on adding a fan plaza/hall of fame type addition to the renovations to Paladin Stadium. Will move a lot of the hardware from the football offices over for public viewing. Maybe that will encourage them to put a flag up for these guys or something. Maybe they just have an exceedingly high standard to meet the retired number requirement (though, if Louis Ivory doesn't make the list, no one makes the list).

I think you kind of need to have the number on there. Something like this would be cool although the basic premise of changing #'s around campus to match retired jersey #'s has been done this would match up with the actual speed limit.

If Brad Hoover's #41 had been retired, I'd have listed it. Brad was inducted into the WCU Hall of Fame in 2008.

Yale made a decision, in football at least, to not ever retire any numbers.

The thinking was that so many of their greatest players and HOFers played before there WERE numbers on the jerseys.

Just to gild the lily, the number they add up to (37) is the historical senior jersey given to a Montanan squad member who best represents the griz. That Dillon and Dickenson's numbers add up to 37 is just plain awesome.

I always thought Adrian Peterson was hands down the best football player I ever saw play in I-AA. What he did on a football field was just amazing.

Then I saw Armanti Edwards play and had to rethink that a little. Both guys are such tough competitors and winners. I sitll don't know how Armanti Edwards got back up after some of the pounding he took.

I'll put AP at No. 1 just because he played for my school, but I know I'd hate to have to chose between the two if I were picking a team right now and could only have one or the other.

I find it hard to believe that Adrian Peterson, and maybe a couple of others, didn't match that. However, assuming that nothing unforeseen happens (and I fervently hope that's a safe assumption), I'm pretty sure it won't be true after the 2012 season.

I'm not sure about AP, but I looked up Armanti's stats, and The Cats is still correct there. Armanti was a four time All-America Selection. xthumbsupx

Didn't Freddy Pesqueria make AA 3 times? And how about Mark "Bus" Williams? Those are just 2 GSU players I can name off the top of my head. I am also certain Peterson was first team AA all 4 years because he was a Payton finalist all 4 years.

Perhaps the wording of the honor for the WCU player is vague. Perhaps he was the only SoCon 3X AA at the time (1987)?????
