You won't hear anything to the contrary from me. In fact... I'll add Murray State, Grambling and Harvard to the list of ridiculous top 25 pics. There are at least 15 teams that deserve consideration before those teams.

They lost virtually nothing.
the main concern re: shsu is coaching turnover, 2 bcs games, 1 non-counter, and only 3 (!) home games.
that said, they should be competitive in both BCS games, and should be good enough to go 7-1 in conference at worst. However unless they manage a win against baylor or A&M, I think the best they can really hope for is a 5 seed.

They have some really good players coming back but I guess losing the mastermind behind their offense does not play into peoples minds that are doing the polls.

SHSU certainly returns a huge amount of talent, but their schedule alone will make it tough. Without a high seed and home field for the playoffs, their road would be precarious at best. Last year they beat both UM and MSU at home, flip that around and put SHSU in Montana in December playing in 20 deg weather instead of 80 deg weather and there very well may have been a different outcome.

I don't get Murray State and Bethune in the top 25, certainly don't get EKU in the top 10, and I'd put Georgia Southern over App State at this point. We have a pretty good recruiting class coming in, and I don't think we lost as much on the defensive side of the ball as some report. Jaybo Shaw was the essence of the term 'field general' and routinely gave up his body for the extra yard. Jerrick McKinnon doesn't (as of yet) have the field presence of Shaw, but more than makes up for it with his quickness and athleticism. Plus, we've upgraded a couple of key coaching positions in the off season. Going to be an interesting year...I just hope we don't go FBS for the next 2-3 yrs...

I am not one that usually believes having to travel is always the roughest road. It sure isn't the easiest but sometimes it will bring out the true character of a team.it is hard to win in Montana but then again it is just as hard for either Montana team to come south and win.they both will probably be in the playoffs but one will be traveling and the road to Frisco goes through the south.I don't recall it being 80 degrees down this way in December.
It will be an exciting year.

They shouldn't beat either team. I guess those programs have football budgets that are probably bigger than SHSU's athletics budget.

The two biggest concerns are staying healthy and the schedule. Thanks to TxSt dropping us to play Navy at the last minute we had to pick up a much tougher A&M team. The schedule is what it is. 3 home games isn't a worry as we will actually have 5. The 2 games in Houston will draw more Kat supporters then the 3 in Huntsville. I think we lose games to Baylor and A&M. Cent. Arky will be a weaker team this year and McNeese we get at home(Huntsville) for homecoming so another undefeated run through conference is very realistic.
On the coaching front, I actually believe we have a better OC coming in. I believe the offense will actually be better with the schemes added like more of a passing attack and no-huddle. After watching the offense score 6 td's (without Flanders playing) against a pretty good defense in the spring game helps confirm that for me. The defense has not lost a step and has improved with the transfer from Boise St. We will have one of the best secondary in the country. It's going to be a very exciting year around here with all Sam has returning.

I will have to agree with you on being ranked in the top 15 in this poll. However, we are definitely worthy of a top 25 consideration. Based on how we finished last season (6 consecutive wins) and number of returning players, I think justifies being at least ranked. Remember this is just a preseason poll, no games have been played. I do think that some of you need to reaccess B-CU football program and look at what coach Brian Jenkins is building in Daytona Beach. We finished last year just outside of the top 25 in some polls and people are starting to take notice of our recruiting and coaching staff. We had 3 coaches this year snapped up by other teams and several offers to other coaches. So being ranked was Nice to see, but we all know that we have to play the games. Wildcats, let's focus on going into the season healthy and eliminating turnovers and penalties. The rest will take care of itself.

I will have to say you are definitely close minded with a statement like this. There are several teams that have every right to be in this poll and worth consideration. Also, at the end of the season some of these teams from these conferences will be ranked and well justified. But you are entitled to your opinion, just realize that these conferences play football and are apart of the FCS too. B-CU is here to play.

I don't disagree with a 20-25 ranking...because those are interchangeable and it is a pre-season poll. But yes, a Top 20 ranking and less (to 14) plus the inclusion of Harvard and Murray State, etc....made me laugh.
That said, I am familiar with what is going on down in Daytona...but on the field performances matter. I watched three Bethune games last year...and I was not impressed though conversely, not disappointed.

After losing to FAMU in the playoffs ('99 I believe?) and the tough games we got from SCSU in '08-'09, I will not take the top teams in the MEAC lightly. The bottom half of the conference is typically pretty weak but the top teams can definitely play. Usually get a tough draw though. Makes it hard to win in the playoffs when your first game is on the road against a top 5 team.

Keep this in mind. They are referred to as preseason polls, but to the preseason selectors (especially the magazines), it's their idea of how teams will finish at the end of the season. Thus, Lindy's thinks Sam Houston will win the national title and a team like Bethune-Cookman will be 14th-best at the end of the season - not the beginning.

It is possible to go through conference undefeated but the odds are against you. SFA will be a contender and will pose a risk and just because you have McNeese at home is not a promised win. The NC game showed everybody the way to stop Sam but things will be different if they use a qb this year that can get the ball to a receiver. It will be hard to stay up for every conference game with a bulls eye on your back but Sam doing well and others in the conference that will do well too will make for an exciting season. I hope to be able to meet you with you before the game and do some tailgating. I've always enjoyed my trips to Huntsville.

Your investment is reflected in on the field performance right? Then what's the problem with allowing someone else to have a ranking in a poll? A poll that probably only 3% of Americans read anyway? But hey, you always have FBS if you feel slighted.

Forget everything then. Pretend it's an entirely new thread, answer this "Who are the programs that have made the investment, in your book?".
Why are you trying to find excuses not to answer it? I'm not waiting to spring any kind of trap once you answer. I do think there are schools who've obviously made an investment in football, yet reside outside the power 4 conferences. Here I'll give an example: Jacksonville St.
So just answer who you think has made an equivalent investment and why.

My wife and I are EKU grads from back in the days of Roy Kidd and two national championships. Those were exciting times for the football - and basketball - programs. From my perspective, EKU has gone through too many coaching changes in the past decade and a half to have anything close to their late 70's/early 80's swagger. Time will tell, and I'd like to see them make the playoffs, if only to have a shot at my son who plays for Georgia Southern. Go Eagles!

Don't understand all this hate (sarcasm?) for EKU. We are certainly not a "LOL" team. This is a PRE season poll, only time will tell where EKU (or anyone else) will finish. I can tell you we have a LOT of kids coming back, second year with the OC and a head coach who got his feet wet last year in the playoffs and hopefully learned a lot from that. One thing that we realized a long time ago at EKU during the 80's and 90's success is that not only do you have to have a great atheletes and cohesive team , you got to have a little luck on on your side (hopefully we will have all three this year).
GSU-EKU grad keep a little love for your alma mater (understand th GSU thing with a son on the team). But you can not have expeienced the Roy Kidd days and not love EKU football!! xnodx

Yes, and pretty much that same thing could have been said in last years poll even though I agree that MT is ranked too high. Just sayin'...
Pjlu was in his second year of an entirrely new system with a new qb last year and made a run. The system is the same, the qb (at this time) is the same, the coach is changed but was there, the defense looks like we lost a ton but in reality there is a whole lot of experience and game minutes back this year.
The losses could be treacherous but to me it's a coin flip if they will be or not.

Do you think that only teams from those four conferences make an investment in their football program? Liberty has made the investment in coaching staff, facilities, recruiting, etc... and its budget exceeds the majority of schools from the four conferences.
Interesting comment. Georgia Southern is exploring options to go FBS in the next 2-3 yrs; even with their outstanding record the past two years and their history, they spend less on the football program (scholarship-wise) than 7 of the 9 teams in the SoCon. This is a fact - they would need another +$4M to 'break-even' with the conference top spenders. Moving to FBS would only fill in the next set of holes, not create a windfall for the coaching staff/university...

But you can not have expeienced the Roy Kidd days and not love EKU football!! xnodx
I do still love EKU football. Still love the school, too. Wifey played volleyball there ('79 thru '82); spent many a night (and too much money) at the Family Dog not to still love it. Dad still lives in Richmond as well - it's home when I'm not in GA. EKU recruited my son to play DE, and I would have given anything for him to go there, but he woudln't have had the FCS championship opportunities there that he has at GA Southern. FWIW - I played football and b'ball with Roy Kidd's two sons; they live (still do!) in my Dad's neighborhood. Great guy - lost in the annals of sports history as the 5th all-time winningest Div. 1 football coach...amazing record.

Go Eagles!
Look forward to seeing your son on the field in a few months!

Just out of curiosity, what is total salaries paid to Liberty's football coaching staff?
I don't know, but they paid our QB coach enough to lure him away from B-CU. We will miss Joe Dailey, but we wish him much success at Liberty.

@eaglesrus;
He's #58, a rising sophomore, plays left offensive tackle - just turned 19 and is now 6'-5" and just shy of a no-fat 260 lbs. Small for a tackle at the FBS level, but runs a sub-4.8 forty and is a perfect fit for the option. One of two of the nine OL that were signed last year that weren't red-shirted, he played in seven games (4 games were 3+ quarters) before a knee injury right before the Wofford game. Loves the game and the school! Perhaps we'll see you tailgating @ Paulson!

Thanks, I really appreciate the info and already appreciate your son's contributions. I take it the knee is good? Sure hope that's an accurate assumption. You're right, those measurements and stats sound perfect for our O-linemen; a little taller than most, which I like. We're on row L (first row of the large tailgate area) space 18 (third in from the middle aisle, on the left when looking out from the stadium). Would love to see you there sometime!

LOL wasn't for EKU it was the preseason ranking of them at nine. A signature loss to Kansas State by 3 is impressive. But I think we all wanted a little more out of the Austin Peay game.

yeah, that lost to Peay was a real head scratcher and bummer for sure xchinscratchx
EKU-GSU: Most of the college bars in downown Richmond have been closed, the city "fathers" had "better ideas for development" and have now killed business downtown xcrazyx
I agree that GSU may give your son a better chance for NC than at EKU. Coach Kidd developed a great program at EKU and unfortunately the leadership (Funderburke..remember him?) DID NOT take advantage of that early on while others moved on (wku, MTSU, Marshall to name a few). The shame is that we still have a administration that just does not seem to "get it"!
The problem at EKU and Richmond is nucklehead and self serving leadership.

UNH at 17th? I know this is a pre season poll, but that is essentially suggesting that UNH will finish around .500 for the season. I highly doubt that. Coach Mac has a great system in place which will allow for us to again qualify for the NCAAs...we are not a 17th ranked team.

Yeah, seriously...Maine is a Top 25 team without a doubt.

The knee is very good. Don't know where we'll end up in the tailgate lot as the family of one of the freshmen OL we grouped with last year is transferring to Valdosta State. I believe the lots open up for bidding 6/1...I'll let you know. In the meantime...I've been working on setting up a Flikr site w/some pictures from his freshman year...I'll post them as soon as I figure out a bug or two w/the posting process.

Yep, I spent many a night (and dollar bill!) at the Family Dog, Phone Three, Poopiazzi's, J. Sutter's Mill, etc., etc. And yes I do remember the Funderburk days, as well as filled stadiums. The unfortunate mess that was the 'play-in' game with JMU this past November w/less than 3,500 people in the stands could have been corrected a long time ago. And I agree w/your comment about others moving on. The early 80's would have been the time for EKU to jump up a notch.

Fouch didn't have a great year last year. All we need is a guy who can throw for 150-200 a game and not throw picks. We need a game manager and I think we have that in Mike Perrish

I may be wrong, but I don't see you finishing any better than you did this year.
Bell is great, but unless you have a QB to capitalize on 8 in the box Bell isn't going to have the numbers he did, nor will the offense.
How many players do you loose from last year? I check the ISU website for about a half hour but it sucks and i didn't feel like checking the roster for seniors then going into the stats to try to find them.
Also, Fouch (from what I found) is the 3rd or 4th best QB stat wise in ISUb history.....so there's that to replace.

We lost wr Justin Hilton, fouch, and our full back but bring back almost everybody else. Our lack a kicking game worries me much more than the loss of fouch does.

Frankly, NDSU has not had a 'good' passing QB since Steve Walker graduated. They won the championship with defenses having both safeties low, knowing they were going to run up the middle. Still scored enough to win and the defense did the rest.
ISU can follow the same model. Same for any other MVFC school that wants to win! Ditch the chuck n duck, shotgun crap with a fast little QB running around, doing the little fake handoff garbage. Play real football.

Fouch was ISU's QB for 2 or 3 years with very little back up action - especially from who the have on the roster I'd bet. They are all freshman and sophomores. NDSU also had one of the top defenses in country and two very good backs.
ISU has an average defense and one running back.

Not saying you're wrong. Just saying the model is clear: NDSU. Get a dominating defense, play a conservative, base scheme. Run the ball with a large offensive line and multiple talented backs, throw the ball only when you have to with high percentage throws.
Just do that.

Just do that.NDSU is one of the few teams to win a title at the FCS level doing that. Nova, Richmond, ASU, EWU, etc... all ran/run wide open offenses.
ISU doesn't have another back that I was impressed with. Bell is great, but when he went out of the UNI game they were sunk. No flow to their offense at all. Their back up didn't even get 60 carries on the season....he's no longer on the team.
That means their second option this year is a guy who ran for 58 yards on 27 carries - 30 of those yards coming in 1 game against UNI in 2.5 quarters of action.
If ISU is going to rely on a run first second third and throw fourth style offense I don't want to do it with two running backs that are 5'8 180 and 5'7 170.
The only other back to record "stats" did it all against freaking Butler, 54 yards on the season.
I think/know Bell is a beast, and they don't have to play UNI but I just don't see anything better than 6-5......maybe 7-4
