I decided I would keep myself occupied on such a slow day as well as entertain the masses with the most detailed preview of the Chattanooga Mocs you will see this season. Let's start with QB
Last year's starter- BJ coleman, graduated, drafted in the 7th round by the Green By Packers.
Projected Starter- Terrell Robinson, RS Sophomore, Robinson is a gifted young athlete with an uncanny ability to make defender miss. He was a Tennessee Mr. Football award winner as a senior in High School at the Chattanooga area South Pittsburgh school. He got some early attention from major schools such as Tennessee, Auburn, and UCLA, but no offers and eventually settled on Hometown Chattanooga. Last season Robinson was named SOCON freshman of the year. Robinson was thrust into a desperate situation for Chattanooga. They were coming off 2 heartbreaking losses to open SOCON play and trailed Georgia Southern 14-0 mid way through the second period. All Robinson did was march Chattanooga to pay dirt on 4 of his 6 possessions in the game. Robinson befuddled Southern defenders with his uncanny ability to make them miss and surprising smooth stride speed. Over 100 yards and 3 TDs later Robinson had sucked the air right out of Paulson stadium after galloping in for what appeared to be the game tying score with under minutes remaining. Living up to his gambler reputation, Coach Huesman went for the win. Robinson's inexperience showed as he never even looked at his all-american wide open receiver Joel Bradford and the Mocs fell for the 3rd straight time in heartbreaking fashion. Robinson continued his brilliant play in the subsequent weeks against Western and Elon. Continuing his running ways but also airing out 3 scoring strikes a piece in 2 blowout vicotirs. Furman finally exposed the young QB with exceptional man-to-man coverage and 9 in the box. Robinson found nothing through the air and little on the ground against the Paladin D. But showing his heart Robinson finally pushed Chattanooga in front in the closing moments by grinding out a gut wrenching drive of 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Robinson's gutsy drive was washed away by the Paladin offense. Robinson was exposed in some ways but if he can continue to develop in a rebuilt offense tailored to his strengths than he could be an outstanding QB in this conference.
Also in the running- Jacob Huesman, Redshirt Freshman. Huesman spent his 2011 running the mocs scout team. He is the son of Head coach Russ Huesman. Huesman was also a Mr. Football in the state of Tennessee while attending Chattanooga's The Baylor School. Huesman was known for his duel threat ability but his straight line speed is what struck fear into the hearts of the opposition. Huesman is a 100m sprinter on the Chattanooga track team. As dangerous as Robinson is in the open field, Huesman maybe be moreso because he doesn't need to make you miss, he will run by you. Huesman was heavily recruited by the Air Force and offered early in the process. He chose Chattanooga instead and stuck by them even when Georgia Tech came calling late in the process. Huesman's accurate arm and straight line speed make him a viable candidate for the Mocs starting QB job. Regardless of who wins the job, OC Marcus Satterfield said both will play.
Graham Nichols- Redshirt Junior- For a long time Nichols was thought to be the successor to BJ Coleman. But the Mocs young athletic talent at the position cannot wait and a new spread offense has been installed to fit Huesman and Robinson. This is not the strength of the more traditional Nichols.

What to expect? Robinson should win the job but Huesman will be hard to keep off the field. If one of these QBs really "get's it" this year, the mocs will be a scary offense to defend.

I can help you out by writing the rest of your preview
"The Chattanooga Mocs have the greatest players in the world playing for their team this year. This team is so good, they are going to win the FCS NC, the BCS NC, The Grey Cup, the Super Bowl, and just for ****s and giggles the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. The NFL Hall of Fame is already asking for these players jerseys.
Robinson is going to throw for 7,500 yards and rush for another 10,000.
The Mecca will, in turn, host the super bowl as the Chattanooga Mocs will face - the Chattanooga Mocs, thus ensuring that the Mocs win it all"

RBs- Chattanooga has a deep, stellar, stable of 5 RBs. I will attempt to make a guess at their impact
Keon Williams- Junior. Williams a Chattanooga local, burst onto the seen during the second half of his true freshman campaign earning SOCON freshman honors as well as taking charge of the Moc backfield. He rushed for 500 yards. Williams was suspended for the entire 2011 season for his off the field issues. He is risky to pick as the Mocs top back not only because of his off field issues but also because he was not in shape in the spring. If Williams can get back in shape he has the skills to not only be a top RB in the conference, but in the entire nation
Stats
Career, 500 yds 4 tds
Last season, DNP
Marquis Green-Sophomore, Green led the Mocs with 553 yards and 3 tds on his way to Freshman all-conference honors last season. He was also a threat out of the backfield as reciever. Very quick speed back who is a 100m sprinter for the Mocs track team. Established himself as the Mocs top back. A nice compliment to Williams.
Stats
Career- 553 yards, 3tds
Last season- 553 yds, 3tds
Kendrix Huitt- Redshirt Freshman, One look at Huitt's highlight film and it is hard to believe that he is not playing major college football. Just based on that I have him making a significant impact this season
Stats- N/A
JJ Jackson- senior, A solid back that may start out as the starter, don't expect him to finish there, but could be good for a few hundred yards.
Stats
Career- 513 yds, 6 tds
last season- 254 yds, 3 tds
Chris Awuah- I believe he is a fairly talented back, but can't stay healthy. If he can I wouldn't be surprised to see him move up to 3rd or 4th on this list.
Stats
Career 532 yds, 8 tds
Last season, 253 yds, 3 tds
Overall- Good young talent and a couple reliable veterans when healthy. Solid group.

The top four running backs in the SoCon all return (GSU's Robert Brown, Wofford's Eric Britenstien, Samford's Fabian Truss, and Furman's Jerodis Williams). You have to be pretty stellar to put that foursome in your rearview.

WR is the biggest question mark on the team.
Marlon Anthony- Junior. Anthony is a returning starter and the only returning WR with more than 5 career catches coming into the season. Anthony was a very highly touted recruit out of high school, a top 100 national receiver. He is a tall guy at 6'5" and has unlimited potential. There is no reason he can't make the next step and become one of the top WRs in the conference.
Stats
Career- 41 catches 528 yards 7 tds
Last season- 27 catches 333 yards 4 tds
Ron Moore- Ron Moore is a much needed deep threat in the mocs system. He can hit the home run and did so last year against Citadel.
Stats-
Career- 3 catches 147 yds 2 ts
Last season- 3 catches 147 yds 2 ts
Tommy Hudson- Tommy is a smaller possession receiver that runs excellent routes. Between Moore and Hudson the mocs should be able to replace Joel Bradford.
Stats-
Career- 5 catches 30 yards
Last season- 5 catches 30 yards
Bryant Belew, Zach Trundle, and Max Zunchini will also be battling for playing time
Stellar recruiting- The Mocs had an excellent recruiting class at the WR position. Don't be surprised if some true freshman don't come in and start. Also the Mocs could get an SEC transfer in the coming days or weeks.

Brown isn't even best back at GSU. Swope is a monster and will overtake Brittenstein as best back in league. Swope up to 225 pounds

Everyone on Georgia Southern is a "running" back. Breitenstein is a beast. Swope is best. He'll get lots of 200+ yard games. Chattanooga is toast this year.

Don't forget Dominique Swope, who had more yards rushing in the PLAYOFFS last year than Chattanooga's Williams has in his CAREER.

TE- the TE position has been an important one for the Mocs during the tenure of Russ Huesman. That will remain the case with the move to the spread.
Faysaal Shafaat- Sophomore, Shafaat took the TE job and ran with it as a true Freshman a year ago earning SOCON freshman honors. Expect Shafaat to take his game to the next level next year especially when it comes to pass catching. With the lack of production returning at receiver the Mocs may need him to.
Stats-
Last year- 19 catches, 179 yards, 2 tds
Career- 19 catches, 179 yards, 2 tds
Sean Stackhouse- Senior, Stackhouse transferred in from Kentucky prior to last season. He played in every game, mostly on special teams. He is a solid blocker who compliments Shafatt's pass catching style well.
Stats- N/A
Jarrod Coleman (BJs brother) and Troy dye will be redshirt freshman. Both have good potential, especially Coleman.

As far as Keon Williams goes, I said he had the talent to be "a top back." He absolutely does, it's not really even debatable. I certainly wouldn't even attempt to compare him to a triple option back when it comes yards. Anyone with a brain knows that rushing stats in a triple option offense are about as legitimate as passing stats in June Jones', Micke leach's or Kevin Sumlin's offense.

Actually when you are trying to make a comparison between 2 players based on stats the offense that their teams run does matter.

That might even be generous... Seon Jones was the scout team RB for GSU last year and Swope was HIS backup at Buford.
Jones is another name folks haven't heard yet but will this coming year...

And gong into last year Williams had 500 yards compared to zero for swope. Williams didn't play last year. So congratualtions on your awesomely irrelevant statistical comparison. Oh, not that I even said Williams was better than anyone on GSU. "A TOP BACK" "A TOP BACK" "A TOP BACK" try to figure out what that means.

He actually ran 16 times for 90 yards against your 1st team defense. He would be a monster on your scout team.

OL- The Mocs return 4 starters and 11 letterman from an offensive line that struggled a year ago. Adam Miller, senior, has started 29 games in his career. Brandon Morgan, sophomore Kevin Revis, Junior, and Patrick Sutton, redshirt Sophomore, also return.
The Mocs also signed their top 2 Oline targets in the 2012 recruiting class. The offensive line should get better this season. Chattanooga doesn't need it to be great, improvment will be needed if the Mocs are to win the Socon.

The Offense has potential but also many questions. However, the only real question on defense is just how high the Mocs will rank nationally. The defense is what may carry the Mocs to the top of the SOCON and possibly deep into the playoffs. The Mocs return 8 starters from the top scoring defense, total defense, pass defense, and pass efficiency defense in the socon. Let's start on the D line
DE- Joshua Williams, Senior, Williams is the Mocs all time sack leader. Despite the fact that the Mocs face several teams every year that run the Triple O, Williams continues to post big sack numbers on an annual basis.
Stats-
Career-21.5 sacks
Last year- 9.5 sacks
Davis Tull- Sophomore,Davis originally committed to Memphis out of high school, a severe knee injury caused them to withdraw the offer and Tull ended up at Chattanooga. When he finally recoverd from injury about half way through the year tul came on strong the rest of the wayTull's natuaral athleticism makes him a nightmare for QB. He is a candidate for double digit sacks in 12 as well as a threat to break Williams sack record.
Stats
Career- 5 sacks
Last season- 5 sacks
Keiota Davis is a true freshman out of Chattanooga that should step in and contribut immediately

DT- Derrick Lott, Junior, the 6'4" 300+ pound transfer from Georgia suffered 2 major injuries but was never that far down the depth chart. Mark Richt's last ditch effort to try and persuade him to stay at Georgia says alot about the ability of this young man. Some can hate on transfers all day, this is a guy that is probably going to be very good.
Chris Mayes, Sophomore, another 6'3" guy nearing 300 pounds. Transferred back after a year of struggling at Navy. It was more about the Naval Academy than his ability to compete at that level. Mayes was the Mocs top DT in spring and I expect him to start beside Lott at DT and form a brick wall along the mocs defensive front.
Josh Freeman, Sophomore, started 10 of 11 at DT last year and should be the first guy off the bench this year.
Toyvian Brand, sophomore, The other main starter from a year ago, Brand did a nice job as a freshman
Keyon Reed, sophomore, also played big minutes last year as a freshman, was very effective and if he can stay out of trouble should probably move into the 2 deep.

LBs- the Mocs biggest loss from 2011 is undoubtedly Ryan Consiglio. Sigs totaled over 300 tackles in the last 3 years including a SOCON leading 120 a year ago.
Wes Dothard- Redshirt Junior, Not often when you lose a guy like Consiglio do you have a first team All American to replace him, that's what you have in the form of Wes Dothard. Dothard overtook Shane Heatherly to earn the job on the outside last year and delivered with 98 tackles and the most forced fumbles in the nation. For that performance, Dothard earned first-team All America honors from the sports network. Dothard will slide over to the middle and look to build upon his tremendous sophomore campaign
Stats
Career-130 tackles
Last Season- 98 tackles
Gunner Miller- Junior, The Chattanooga native has made 16 starts in his 2 seasons of eligibility. Miller is a workout warrior, holding several Moc Weightlifting records. His intensity stretches onto the field with his eye black which he spreads liberally across his face. But make no mistake Miller is more than just a character and a weight room guy. He has unbelievable speed fr someone his size. It is a sight to behold to watch Gunner track down a small quick running back who thought Miller was out of the play. Miller's signature moment of 2011 came when he took an Int to the house at Elon.
Stats
Career- 85 tackles
Last season- 51 tackles
Shane Heatherly, Senior, Heatherly started every game as a Sophomore before Dothard took his job a year ago. Heatherly is a solid guy that can really compliment Miller and Dothard well.
Stats
Career- 63 tackles
Last Season- 11 tackles
A freshman to watch at LB is Alex Kirby out of Calhoun Georgia. Kirby anchored the defending Small School National Champions defense earning prestigious defensive player of the year honors for entire classification of AA in Georgia. Some believe Kirby could play at any level of college football but will have his chance to make a mark as a true freshman at Chattanooga.
