Most Exciting Games You've Attended

Just curious what some of the best memories you have from games are.
Here are some of mine.

UNI vs Idaho in the UNI Dome in the 90s. I believe there were two such games, one possibly being a 1 vs 2 match-up. I was young, so I don't recall scores or outcomes, I think we split the two games. I just remember one of them Idaho missed a field goal at the end and we held onto the win.

Last two games at home against Southern Illinois have been amazing, especially the most recent one.

The game at New Hampshire and roadtripping with Ralph and Cap'n Cat will never be forgotten. Met some great people out there.

There are a lot more, but those are some of the highlights.

National Semi-Final Game @ Cedar Falls, Iowa. GSU won 40-33.
This was one where it was impossible to sit down. Regardless of who you were pulling for, this was one helluva collegiate football game. Both teams deserved to win, but fate was on the Eagles' side. Also the coldest place I have ever been; -41 chill factor the night before the game.

National Championship Game @ Tacoma, Washington. GSU won 44-42.
A Furman blowout in the first half, Georgia Southern (namely Tracy Ham) took control in the second half and scored the go-ahead TD with under 20 seconds left. Complete pandemonium ensued and FU almost ran the kickoff back. One play later (a sack of Bobby Lamb) the game was over and the Georgia Southern dynasty started.

As many I-AA fans will agree, ANY win over the Phurman Purple Pansies is a GREAT win! The '05 win as satisfying as the '85 win.

Also, the 2004 UC Davis-Cal Poly game and the 2005 UC Davis-Cal Poly game. Both big wins and great games for the Ags!

2004 McNeese @ SHSU - Went down to the end with SHSU putting on a great defensive stop in the end zone that stopped McNeese from winning and helping the Kats stay on path for the SLC title. Nice win over McN. Doesn't happen often for the Kats...

1993- SU vs. Alcorn (47-31)- Air McNair vs. the Jags. It was a packed house and Southern was undefeated heading into that game. The atmosphere was amazing. Plain and simple it was a shoot-out. McNair was awsome but the Jags had too much firepower that night, sealed the game with a kick return touchdown.

1994- SU at Alcorn (37-41)- the rematch, McNair was on his way to setting more records. Another packed house, the old Spinks Jinx kicked in on the Jags. Back and forth game all day. The Jags almost won this one on a kick return but they couldn't seal the deal.

1999- Bayou Classic (37-31)- SWAC west title on the line. Grambling jumped out to a huge lead in the first half led be Baton Rouge product Lionel Hayes but the Jags took over in the second half to win. I have never heard the Superdome that loud before in my life.

1999 SWAC Championship (31-30)- Southern had control in the first half but Jackson State made a surge in the fourth quarter. Southern scored late on a big pass play and sealed the game with an interception.

2004 win over McNeese. What a wild game that was.

2001 win over No. Arizona in the first round of playoffs. Josh McCown (now with Detroit Lions) hit Adam Karas for a 40+ yard pass down the sidelines and he was able to get out of bounds with one second on the clock. Field goal was made with 0:00 on the clock and SHSU made their first trip to Quarterfinals.

Games I personally attended:

1976 Game with USL that still holds the attendance record for Cowboy Stadium and determined which team went to the inaugural Indy Bowl. Won by McNeese20-19 late in the game.

1976 Indy Bowl vs Tulsa. McNeese was a depleted team at that game due to NCAA rules back then about fifth year seniors participating in Bowl games. People were trying to talk the Southland Conf into sending another team because, as one newspaper reported, we were sending our "JV" team to play the game. We beat Tulsa with a last minute touchdown run by our fullback.

1997 playoff win against Montana.

2000 vs. Sac State -- "Damon's Dash" -- Griz down 20-0 at halftime and stage a comeback but look done for in the 4th down 20-17 and Sac with the ball about to get a first down and run out the clock. Sac State QB fumbles the ball and Damon Parker returns it 46 yards for a TD. The stadium was so raucous that I could see the press box windows shaking as if they were about to break.

And I would add Nygrins Ride. Montana beats Idaho on a last second 100+ yard Int return. A feild goal would put Idaho up 9 with less then 1 minute to play, I still dont know what Freize (idaho QB) was thinking.

It's not often I get to see a SOCON school visit Natchitoches...so there was no way on Earth I was planning on missing that one.

Man was I glad I didn't.

At first I figured we had the game on lock because we basically ran down their throats and we jumped out to what I think was 31-7 lead at Halftime (Fowlkes caught or D slippin in the 2 minute drill) or something like that...I wasn't paying attention to the scoreboard.....

That was Until Appy Utterly WENT NUTS.

Appalachian State realized we were playing too much man to man. Richie William and WR DaVon Fowlkes were simply AMAZING!! (who also played some downs at RB when Richardson got hurt). Vowlkes was simply running Fly routes and always seemed to be matched up with one of our safties (Advantage.....take a guess).

Then when we thought it couldn't get any worse..The other Wrs got in the act too. I mean these guys were outjumping our DBs in TRIPLE and QUADROUPLE COVERAGES. Touchdown after TD.

All this While I don't think we even got a yrd the whole 3rd quarter until after the Purple Swarm forced a safety after we scored on the previous possession. A chance to breathe right???

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!

4th Quarter....Fowlkes was at it again....It was like this kid said WE WILL NOT LOSE. His 4th TD (A 95 yrd Bomb --- he burnt our safety to a Crisp by at least 10 yrds) suddenly cut the score to 40-35.

And to make things worse ...Appalachian State got the ball back AGAIN!!!
This time with a chance to WIN :eek: :eek: .

I don't think I've ever heard Turpin as loud as ever (well...maybe the McNeese Game when I was a Freshman)....which I think was the reason we won.

4th down and 7 and under a minute to go at NSU's 35 yrd Line. The crowd noise (not much to talk about in Turpin) was off the charts....The Line couldn't hear William's audible (Thank God!!!! They had Fowlkes UNCOVERED....I mean if a guy scorches ya secondary for 4 TD's How do U leave him UNCOVERED?????)

Anyways....About 4 linemen missed their block on a blitz and the Purple Swarm ate him alive....Ballgame.

And a sigh of Relief from Demon Fans.

Without doubt, the thrilling 1974 Harvard-Yale game in Cambridge. It was capped by Harvard QB Milt Holt's 1-yard plunge into the end zone -- ending a 95-yard drive -- with 16 seconds left. The game also featured a TD pass by Harvard's star WR (and later Bengals punter) Pat McInally.

Mine came back to back in 2004.

New Hampshire was beating everyone in sight, including Georgia Southern at home, and what that earned them was a trip to Washington/Grizzly. They were without David Ball, and the score would have been different if he was in the game, but I don't think the results would have been. Great game!

The following week, Sam Houston came to Missoula. They had thumped us earlier in the year at their house, and we returned the favor in ours.

Two of the most exciting weeks of football that I've been a part of.

1967 Yale 24 Harvard 20

Yale got off quickly and had a 17-7 halftime lead. Harvard came back to take a 20-17 lead with 3 minutes to go. Yale scored on a long TD pass with two minutes left. Still not over. Harvard drives down to the Yale 10 and fumbles with only seconds left (on a draw play which was actually a great call. The running back had gotten a first down when he was hit). It was also the first time the Bowl had been sold out in years. 68,000+

Honorable metion to Yale-Dartmouth 1975. Dartmouth scored with 30 seconds left to take a one point lead(with the XP). However, the Dartmouth receiver who scored, ran in front of the Yale bench waving the ball. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Instead of the kickoff being from the 40, it was pushed back to the 25. Yale ran the kick back to the 50, completed two passes and kicked a 47 yard FG as time expired. 16-14 Yale.

NDSU vs UND in 2000

Packed house(16k Bison fans and 3k UND), the atmosphere was just electric. NDSU sacked UND's QB to end the game and the Dome just erupted. NDSU won the game 16-13 and also the coveted Nickel Trophy as well.

I wish I would have been in Missoula when the Bison took down the Griz because I'm sure that would have been #1, that is easily the best game I have ever watched NDSU play.

1985 Navy at UD - Napolean McCallum gets stuffed and the Hens beat the Mids in the first modern day meeting with Rich Gannon leading the way. :hurray:

1985 UD at UMass - Hens score winning TD with less than a minute to go with the UMass band getting ready to take the field for a victory march. :hurray:

Modern day...

2003 UD at Navy - down 14 points before I sit down the Hens dominate the rest of the way to beat the Mids... again.

2003 Wofford at UD - semi-final win sending the Hens to the NC for the first time in 20+ years. :hurray: :hurray:

2004 UD at JMU - Hens outgain Dukes by a huge margin but a punt return for a TD gives the Dukes the lead late. Hens have 1st and goal at the 4 with just over a minute to go and get denied. :bawling:

2005 UD at Towson - Tigers jump out to big lead but Hens come all the way back to take the lead. Tigers go back up, then the Hens, then the Tigers score again with less than two minutes to go to go up for good. Tigers first A10 win. :bawling: :bawling:

Have to add... 2005 Lehigh at UD because of the fourth quarter heroics.

The 1961 GAME at Taylor stadium.....

I'll second that one. Still, in my mind, the greatest college football game that I ever witnessed in person. The book Legends of Lehigh-Lafayette, which details the series from its beginning until publication of the book (my copy ends with the 1994 game, but I understand that there have been updates), calls the 4th quarter "...the most exciting in The Game's history." "After six turnovers, two penalties, a 'Hail Mary' pass, and a UFO sighting [referring to Andy Larko's game ending field goal which was not a thing of beauty], the fourth quarter finally came to an end with Lehigh capturing a thrilling 17-14 victory."

I'm sure that the faithful on both sides will bring up Brian Klingerman's "catch in the gloaming" to win a double overtime game in the 90's or last year's as yet unnamed 4th and 10 catch with 38 seconds to go by Jonathon Hurt to score the winning TD for Lafayette, but I still remember the 1988 game better than either of those. There were some friendly bets being made before the game as to whether the two teams would combine for 100 points. Only 97 were scored (Lafayette 52, Lehigh 45) but it was end to end action and you knew that the first team that punted was going to lose. At one point late in the second quarter Lafayette lined up for a field goal attempt while the field announcer informed one and all that "this is the first 4th down of the game."

Colgate vs. Western Illinois, Quarterfinals

Michna fumbles the ball as he crosses the goalline midway through the 4th, but the TD still counted as WIU took a 27-21 lead. :mad:

After a stalled drive, Colgate's D hold down WIU, then returns the punt deep into Leatherneck territory. With a 1st and Goal at the 2, Colgate tries once, twice, third time's the charm for Jamaal Branch. Schwarzberg's kick is up and good, Colgate up 28-27 with out two minutes to go. :hurray:

Michna starts to move the ball, picking up a couple of first downs. Then, pass over the middle is INTERCEPTED!!!! Colgate runs out the clock and the goalposts came down! :hurray: :hurray: :hurray:

And all in a driving snowstorm :D

In 2004, there was a string of incredible games that the Bobcats played.

It started against Weber State (homecoming). We were down 17-0 with 12:06 left in the 3rd. Game gets tied up, and the Bobcats try to drive into FG range for the win. Lulay busts out a big scramble that got us to their 30. Domineck ran up the gut for 3, putting us at the 27 with 3 seconds left. Cochrane then kicks a 44 yard FG in swirling winds to cap off the comeback. Here is EJ just after the kick.

The following week was even more exciting. Home vs PSU, down 14-3 at half. Down 21-10, then 24-17 with 1:55 left, we execute a 82 yard drive, converting three fourth downs, and capped with a 1 yard TD run by Domineck AS TIME EXPIRES to send it into OT, where Domineck ran 17 yards into the endzone to end a crazy, crazy game, and the 2nd week in a row where we won the game with no time left on the clock. The next week saw a scare from SDSU, as we were up 27-10 with 2 minutes left, and the scrappy Rabbits scored 14 points in about 1:30. We almost blew that one.

2 weeks later is the most exciting Bobcat game I have ever been to, a big fat loss to EWU in an OT thriller. We were up 31-10 early in the 3rd, but EWU caught on fire. They scored 20 points in the 3rd, while we settled for field goals, leaving the score 37-30 at the end of 3. Kefu would tie the game at 37 with 8:13 left. Bobcats would go up 44-37 on a 32 yard TD pass to Gatewood with 1:17 left on the clock, but the Eags would drive 72 yards on 8 plays, capped off by a 5 yard TD pass with 12 ticks left on the clock to send the game into OT. The Eagles would strike first in OT. The Bobcats would get down to the 1 and have 4 tries to get in, but would not find any sucess, thus completing the most ridiculous game I have ever seen.

...and even though YSU ended up losing the game, the 1992 title game was also a thriller. This was Marshall's 8th try inside the 5, and 7th try inside the 2 ...they were stuffed:

1965 - Colgate 29, Army 28 (at West Point). Colgate's biggest upset of the 1960's over what was still a big-time Army program.

1969 - Princeton 35, Dartmouth 7 (at Princeton). Princeton, led by Hank Bijorklund and Scott McBean, earns a share of the Ivy League title by upsetting undefeated and Lambert Poll #2 Dartmouth.

1976 - Rutgers 17, Colgate 9 (at Giants Stadium). Probably the greatest Rutgers team ever (finished at #18 in the AP poll) finished an 11-0 undefeated season on Thanksgiving night against a tough Colgate team.

1977 - Colgate 23, Rutgers 0 (at Hamilton). The rematch in the following year's season opener before the largest crowd in Andy Kerr Stadium history, estimated at nearly 18,000.

1978 - Harvard 24, Princeton 24 (at Princeton). I can't recall if it was Larry Brown or Jim Kubacki, but Harvard's quarterback had a wonderful game in a wild one but was let down by his defense. Chris Howe's 57yd FG attempt fell short as the game ended.

1979 - Delaware 24, Colgate 16 (at Hamilton). On the way to the Division II national championship, Scott Brunner led a great Hen team over a revenge-minded Colgate squad on a muddy, windy. cold day.

1981 - Princeton 35, Yale 31 (at Princeton). 3-4-1 Princeton, led by Bob Holly and Derek Graham, upset an fine 8-0 Yale team which had defeated nationally ranked Navy in the last Ivy League year in Division I-A.

1985 - Army 45, Colgate 43 (at West Point). On an idyllic Homecoming Day at Army, before nearly 40,000, Colgate, led by Tom Burgess, Kenny Gamble and Sheldon Spicer, nearly upset Rob Healy, Doug Black and Army, bound for the Peach Bowl.

1986 - Bucknell 40, Colgate 39 (at Lewisburg). Jim Given and Bucknell came from behind to beat a good Colgate team led by Damon Phelan, Greg Manusky and Kenny Gamble. Colgate had a chance to win with a Mike Powers FG on the last play of the game but the attempt was foiled by a bad snap.

1987 - Colgate 22, Army 20 (at West Point). On another beautiful afternoon at Michie Stadium, Gamble and Phelan had big days as Colgate pulled the upset.

1989 - Yale 14, Princeton 7 (at Princeton). Darren Kehler, Yale's QB, ran the Wishbone to perfection as Yale won and clinched a share of the Ivy League championship before over 39,000 in Palmer Stadium. Judd Garrett's fourth-quarter fumble deep in Yale territory sealed the Tiger defeat.

1990 - Rutgers 21, Colgate 10 (at New Brunswick). Colgate played a great game but ran out of gas against a bigger Rutgers team on a hot September day before 26,000.

1991 - Holy Cross 42, Lehigh 41 (at Bethlehem). One of the greatest college football games ever before a sellout at Goodman Stadium. Game was 7-7 at the half - second half was like Ali-Frazier III.

1995 - Princeton 34, Colgate 23 (at Hamilton). Colgate, which would finish 0-11 got big days from Mark Lindell, Anthony Cavaretta and Daymon Smith but fell to eventual Ivy League champion Princeton.

1996 - Bucknell 28, Colgate 27 (at Lewisburg). Bucknell won its only Patriot League Championship in overtime in an epic game.

1998 - Navy 42, Colgate 35 (at Annapolis). A wild shoot-out between Ryan Vena and Corey Hill for Colgate and Brian Broadwater, a great Wishbone QB for the Middies.

2001 - Lehigh 27, Hofstra 24 (at Bethlehem). A wonderful playoff game that neither club deserved to lose.

2003 - Colgate 19, UMass 7 (at Hamilton). Played in a blizzard two days after Thanksgiving, Colgate showed great poise against a very good UMass team.

2003 - Colgate 28, Western Illinois 27 (at Hamilton). The following week, Colgate prevailed again in a huge snowstorm over a Travis Glasford and a good WIU team(and I ended up with the flu after two consecutive weeks of "Colgate Winter"), but it was worth it.

2004 - Lafayette 24, Lehigh 10 (at Easton). Great game in which the Leopards, led by Joe McCourt, got some hard-earned redemption and physcially dominated the Engineers.

2005 - Princeton 30, Pennsylvania 13 (at Philadelphia). Best game Princeton has played under Roger Hughes.

1994 playoff win over McNeese -- last second FG in the snow after a wild drive.

I was wondering if any Montana fan was going to mention that game. It was truely a classic. McNeese was down 27-7 in the fourth quarter and came back to take a 28-27 lead. Then, with a little over 2 minutes left and Montana out of timeouts, McNeese was deep in Montana territory facing fourth and one. McNeese opted to go for it...as making it would've ended the game...instead of attempting a chip shot field goal. Montana stopped the Cowboys and got the ball back.

It looked to me like Montana tried a hook and lateral play. The receiver was hit as soon almost as soon as he caught the ball so it didn't go smoothly. The lateral or fumble, whichever it was, hit the ground. But it took a perfect bounce to another Montana player who ran it to near field goal range. If I remember correctly, Montana completed one sideline pass from there then kicked the game winning field goal.

I wasn't there so it can't be one of the most exciting games I've ever attended, but it was some game.

Certainly this past year's Game and the Klingerman Catch,(one handed in back of the endzone in the darkness in double OT) are both up there. The OT victory versus Hofstra in '01, when Lehigh went 93 yards in under two minutes with little Jermaine Pugh bouncing off defenders to get into the endzone to send the game into OT, then winning on a FG that was set up by an interception to turn away the Dutchmen's first possession is another.
The Delaware game at Taylor Stadium that almost resulted in a riot when UD was given another second on the clock after everyone thought time had run out was a heart stopper. The noise was deafening in the final drive with everyone stomping on the metal upper deck. The OT victory at Fordham in '03 on a 49 yard field goal after coming back to tie on a 47 yarder.
Last year's one point loss to Delaware in OT was draining as we watched Lehigh trying to hold onto a fourth quarter lead
The goal line stand against James Madison in the 'o4 playoffs was something to behold, as well.

10/25/1958 - Army 14, Pittsburgh 14. This was Red Blaik's Anderson/Dawkins/Lonesome End team, and this was the only blemish on their record that year. Not only that, but yours truly had a face to face, chance encounter with Red Grange, the old Gallopin' Ghost himself as he took a halftime stroll near the press box at old Pitt Stadium. All in all, a memorable day.

Mine came back to back in 2004.

New Hampshire was beating everyone in sight, including Georgia Southern at home, and what that earned them was a trip to Washington/Grizzly. They were without David Ball, and the score would have been different if he was in the game, but I don't think the results would have been. Great game!

The following week, Sam Houston came to Missoula. They had thumped us earlier in the year at their house, and we returned the favor in ours.

Two of the most exciting weeks of football that I've been a part of.

2004 was a great year. One of my greatest games to see was the spanking we put on the Griz in Huntsville. Have been to Missoula twice in freezing cold weather to watch us get beat, but it was great to get them in the 90+ degree heat that day. Hopefully we can renew the series again. We finally got ours that day...

Most exciting I have attended:

1995 - Delaware in the hole (The game was not that close but very enjoyable as payback for the great comback in the 70's by the hens in the only other game between the teams at that time)

1997 - Delaware Semi-Final game at the Tub. Last second field goal clinched the game for the Pokes. I remember walking around the endzone opposite the student section to exit the field.

2002 - Playoff games with Montana and Montana State (back to back weeks) both of which were won in the second half.

2003 and 2005 Games with Georgia Southern.

There are others, but those seem to stick in my mind :D

As for non-I-AA games attended, two stand out:

1976--In South Bend, #1 v.#2. Alabama and the Fighting Irish. Jammed packed. My one and only visit to football's 'shrine'. Alabama driving the ball trailing 21-17 in the fourth quarter. Time running down, no timeouts. Crimson Tide get to the one and the game's over..Wow.

1968--Boyertown High School (PA) at Pottstown (PA). Two arch rivals under the Friday night lights. Pottstown goes out to a 20-0 lead in the fourth quarter. Boyertown rallies to pull within 20-19 with 1:30 left. Onside kick fails. Boyertown forces three and punt. Boyertown moves to mid-field and with under 20 seconds, throws an 'end around pass' for a touchdown. 26 fourth quarter points--and Boyertown had missed two extra points in their earlier touchdowns or the final heroics wouldn't have been necessary. They had also scored on the same end around pass on two of the three touchdowns. Everyone in the crowd of 10,000 knew it was coming again and Pottstown couldn't stop it. Boyertown goes on to win the Ches-Mont League Championship after being pick pre-season for 8th in a ten team league. 38 years later, that game is still etched in my mind...:rotateh:

1997 Delaware 16 Georgia Southern 7. A really tough hard hitting game with a great goal line stand by the HENS.
2003 Delaware 51 Umass 45 3 overtimes. More than enough drama for 3 novels. Everyone left this game with the need to see a cardiologist. Most UD / Umass games were exciting but this one was just unreal.

NE PA), Channel 12 New Jersey (North and Central NJ), Service Electric (Northwest NJ) and MSG (North NJ, NYC Metro, LI and CT)stations. Some of these games are the best, most passionate football you would ever want to see.

My bad, forgetting '77 UD-Colgate, which I attended. It was a very intense and exciting game and UD kicked our butts.

I think we had a close loss to Grand Valley St a couple of years ago at the same spot I previously mentioned.

Every other close game there went the wrong way.

It's not often I get to see a SOCON school visit Natchitoches...so there was no way on Earth I was planning on missing that one.

Man was I glad I didn't.

At first I figured we had the game on lock because we basically ran down their throats and we jumped out to what I think was 31-7 lead at Halftime (Fowlkes caught or D slippin in the 2 minute drill) or something like that...I wasn't paying attention to the scoreboard.....

That was Until Appy Utterly WENT NUTS.

Appalachian State realized we were playing too much man to man. Richie William and WR DaVon Fowlkes were simply AMAZING!! (who also played some downs at RB when Richardson got hurt). Vowlkes was simply running Fly routes and always seemed to be matched up with one of our safties (Advantage.....take a guess).

Then when we thought it couldn't get any worse..The other Wrs got in the act too. I mean these guys were outjumping our DBs in TRIPLE and QUADROUPLE COVERAGES. Touchdown after TD.

All this While I don't think we even got a yrd the whole 3rd quarter until after the Purple Swarm forced a safety after we scored on the previous possession. A chance to breathe right???

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!

4th Quarter....Fowlkes was at it again....It was like this kid said WE WILL NOT LOSE. His 4th TD (A 95 yrd Bomb --- he burnt our safety to a Crisp by at least 10 yrds) suddenly cut the score to 40-35.

And to make things worse ...Appalachian State got the ball back AGAIN!!!
This time with a chance to WIN :eek: :eek: .

I don't think I've ever heard Turpin as loud as ever (well...maybe the McNeese Game when I was a Freshman)....which I think was the reason we won.

4th down and 7 and under a minute to go at NSU's 35 yrd Line. The crowd noise (not much to talk about in Turpin) was off the charts....The Line couldn't hear William's audible (Thank God!!!! They had Fowlkes UNCOVERED....I mean if a guy scorches ya secondary for 4 TD's How do U leave him UNCOVERED?????)

Anyways....About 4 linemen missed their block on a blitz and the Purple Swarm ate him alive....Ballgame.

TVR got my game: Colgate/Western Illinois is the 2003 playoffs. He did forget one key highlight though: J.B. Gerald's punt return after we stuffed WIU after they went ahead. That punt return was awesome and set up Branch's game winning TD.

11/6/2004....Conway, AR....Estes Stadium...10,000+ fans packed the 8,500 seat stadium to watch UCA take on its most hated rival the Arkansas Tech Wonderboys. This rivalry is the oldest and most heated in the state of Arkansas having been played 84 times since 1911. This game turned out to be the next to last in the rivalry as UCA is moving up in divisions. UCA needed two overtimes to earn a 38-31 victory over Tech to even the all-time series (40-40-3) between the two teams. In the
game, both teams combined for 926 total yards and 69 points. UCA’s win spoiled Tech’s chance for a perfect season and a GSC title. The Bears earned the win thanks to a 6-yard touchdown pass from Zak Clark to Aaron Fairooz in the second overtime. Tech, though, had a chance to tie the game, but senior quarterback Jason Campbell’s rush on fourthdown fell just short of the end zone to seal UCA’s win. The next year UCA would take the final victory in the series with a 49-17 W and the overall series lead at 41-40-3, and with the two teams not meeting anytime in the near future it may stay that way for some time! Man I am going to miss this game!

The Colonels went into the game with a 3-6 record while McNeese was ranked in the top 10 with 1 conference loss and tied with Northwestern St. for the conference lead (Northwestern beat McNeese earlier in the season 14-10).

Nicholls surprised many fans by hanging with the Cowboys throughout the game. Late in the 4th quarter, the Cowboys put together what many people thought to be the game-winning drive giving McNeese a 30-24 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, the return man brought the ball back close to mid-field. Nicholls then threw a short pass to move closer to the end zone. The Nicholls QB Brad Zeller, then threw a long pass (30-40+ yards) for a TD to shock the Cowboy fans and players alike. The kick was good and Nicholls held on for the win over the highly touted Cowboys. The next week, McNeese would go on to get eliminated by eventual National Champion UMass the following week at home 21-19.

McNeese lost 3 games that season by a total of 7 points and to us, beating McNeese was like winning the Superbowl. The Cowboys had won 4 SLC titles since 1990 was was either SLC Champion or 2nd place every year since 1990 (except for a 1-5 hiccup of a season in 1996 - incidentally, the year Nicholls went back to the playoffs as the 2nd place SLC team). Over that span (excluding 1996) the Cowboys lost a total of 6 conference games and had only lost 2 SLC games in a season once in 1990.

We always took pleasure in thinking that maybe, just maybe the loss to Nicholls was still in the back of their minds when they lost to UMass.


That was my freshman year at Nicholls. Strangely enough, the best high school game I have ever seen also took place in Cowboy Stadium when Hahnville High beat Lagrange High in the 4A playoffs....my freshman year of high school.

Probably the two most exciting (and depressing) games for the Terriers were against Furman in 2002 and 2004 - both marred by last minute Paladin Touchdowns.

The 2003 and 2005 games with Georgia Southern were almost as exciting (and ended much happier).

Last years melt down against Gardner-Webb, where the Terriers blew a 34 point lead before coming from behind late in the fourth quarter with a long pass to set up the go-ahead TD, and a 98 yard fullback run to put the game away, was much more exciting than I would have liked:) .

I was there and the wide receiver made an incredible catch to win that game. I agree with you 100% about the effect that game had on the playoff game the next week. We had been to Chatty the year before and were chomping at the bit to go back and take care of some unfinished business. The following week against Umass, our receivers dropped 3 or 4 wide open passes that would have resulted in a win for McNeese. I take nothing away from the Minutemen, they came here and played their hearts out (without Marcel Shipp), took the win here and then went to NWST and won and finished up the NC.

MSU Scored a TD with 2 seconds left and each team scored what seemed like 20 touchdowns in the last minute of the game. It was amzing, SHSU brought a lot of good fans to the game, too.

SMS quarterback A.J. Porter found receiver Kaya Farris for a seven-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining in the game to cap a flurry of scoring and give the Bears a 33-31 football victory over Sam Houston State Saturday at Plaster Field.

The Bears (2-0) and the Bearkats (1-1) combined for 37 points in the final period and 27 points in the last 2:37 as Porter’s pass to Farris gave SMS two come-from-behind touchdowns in the final 1:33 of the game.

The fireworks began late in the fourth quarter. With SMS leading 20-17, Sam Houston State QB Dustin Long hit Jason Mathenia on a 44-yard strike down the sideline and the extra point gave the Bearkats a 24-20 lead with 2:37 left in the game.

On the ensuing drive, the Bears started on their own 27-yard line and a sack put SMS at the 17. Porter then hit WR Steven Rush on a 26-yard completion and Jeremy Nicholson got his first career catch for 22 yards and put the ball on the Sam Houston 40-yard line. Rush then caught a tipped pass from Porter and broke a pair of tackles and ran 40 yards for the touchdown to put the Bears in the lead, 27-24 with 1:33 remaining.

Then it was Sam Houston’s turn again. After an incomplete pass on the first play, Long hit Mathenia on a very similar play only this time it went 83 yards for a score to again give the Bearkats a 31-27 lead but there was still 1:10 left on the clock.

The Bears started the winning drive on their own 21-yard line and Porter was 7-for-9 on the drive with the only two incompletions coming on “stop the clock” plays. Porter hit Rush for gains of 19, nine and seven. He then hit Nicholson on a 16-yard completion, hit Farris for eight yards and Nicholson again for 13 before the game-winning pass to Farris.

Sam Houston had one last chance after a passing the ball around on the kickoff return, the Bearkats attempted a 57-yard field goal that came up short and left to clinch the victory for the Bears.

In the game, Porter was 28-for-38 for 342 yards and two touchdowns and Rush was his leading receiver with 10 catches for 152 yards. Five of Rush’s 10 receptions and 102 of his 152 yards came on the final two drives. SMS TB Cody Pratt had 87 yards on a career-high 37 carries.

Sam Houston outgained the Bears with 453 total yards to 420 total yards for SMS. But Long also threw four interceptions and the Bears forced a total of six turnovers in the contest.

SMS got on the board first in the first period when Porter capped an impressive drive 10-play, 78-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run. But Sam Houston answered with a 14-play, 80-yard drive that took 5:34 off the clock.

Bears’ kicker Jon Scifres gave SMS a 10-7 halftime lead with a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Sam Houston kicker Joey Price drew the Bearkats even with a career-long 49-yard field goal in the third quarter but the Bears would regain the lead on a two-yard run with Pratt to make the score 17-10 with 1:05 left in the period.

After an SMS fumble gave Sam Houston the ball on the one-yard line, Bearkats RB Stevie Smith tied the game on the short run with 13:05 left in the game. SMS put together another nice drive and Jon Scifres capped an 11-play, 41-yard drive with a 26-yard field to put the Bears in the lead 20-17 and set up the final minutes of the game.

Have to add one more game it witnessed in late October/early November 1976 at Michigan State when a horrible MSU team upset, then #1 Ohio State that had Archie Griffin AND Pete Johnson in the same backfield. OSU got the ball deep in their own territory with about a minute to go and went the length of the field on THREE PLAYS, ALL ON THE GROUND! Got to the MSU one when time was running our and couldn't set up in time for one more play. They snapped the ball before everyone was set and appeared to score. Mayhem and confusion ensued for at least 30 minutes before the referees declared MSU the winner.

Personally, I thought the call was correct. I just think it is a call the defense should be able to decline. Despite having a McNeese player jump prior to the snap Delaware stopped the 4th and 1 play.

You have to admit that Delaware owns Youngstown and had a better chance in the title game. The 2000 semi game vs. App St. Jimmy Farris catches a TD pass in the back of the end zone to send the Griz to the national championship. Still the only time I have ever hugged my brother in law. After the game I was almost knocked unconcious by the goal post on the field but it was soooo worth it.

Oh, there are so many ranging from the OT App win at New Hampshire in the 1994 playoffs, to the Marshall rivalry with the 10-3 win for App at Marshall in 1995, to the more recent rivalry with Furman, including the past 5 meetings, but who could ever forget the Miracle on the Mountain, in 2002, with the interception by Jeffries of the two-point coversion all the way back to the house for the go ahead two points.

My father had coached some of the Arkansas players in this game (and remained friends with them so well that some attended his funeral) so I had that personal aspect, but the real irony was that I rode up from Texas to the game with the brother of one the Texas players. They owned a mom and pop store near us. I was a senior in high school and we just came up the idea to go on Thursday, we didn't even have tickets. His folks loaded us up with food, and we left on Friday at noon. The weather turned really cold and sleet and rain, we weren't sure we were going to make it. Found a motel, slept for about 5 hours, got up and started driving again. We got there and bout student tickets (which were free to students) for 5 bucks each, which got me a standing room spot in the north endzone. After my Razorbacks lost (I had moved to Texas from Arkansas two years earlier), I went with the guys I rode up with and was able to get into the Texas dressing room after the game and even got a game program signed by President Nixon. One hell of a memory of college football.

I have a copy of "Hooks, Horns and Nixon Coming" by Terry Frei's and it is really great. That Texas - Arkansas game was played by young men who were football players, but football was only a part of their lives - the Vietnam War was very much a part of their thinking, and many of them knew they would be drafter soon and hoped simply to survive the war so they could build a live for themselves and their families thereafter. The stuff about Freddy Steinmark and his cancer battle still gives me goosebumps.

In the mid 1970's, I think, Joe Paterno was asked to the give the commencement speech at Penn State's graduation. In the speech, he said, to paraphrase,'How did Nixon know so much about football in 1969, and nothing about Watergate in 1972?'...:nod:

For me, there haven't been many Northeastern games that are memorable/exciting other than the 1992 win over Youngstown.

But other games I've been to...

1981 Yale-Harvard
1987 Yale-Harvard - we've discussed this on the board before. The Yale Bowl was a freaking icebox, and Harvard won a VERY close game.

1996 Notre Dame-Army (Giants Stadium). ND led 28-0, Army storms back to make the score 28-27 with about a minute or so to go. Army decides to go for the win instead of the tie, and and ND player gets a fingertip on the pass to the end zone for the conversion.

2000 Northwestern-Michigan (this one's always on ESPN Classic). I think the final was like 51-46. Michigan had this game iced, and hands the ball off to the A-Train who breaks through the line with a minute or so in the game. A Northwestern player gets a hand on the ball, recovers the fumble and Northwestern scores to win.

SHSU also lost their 2nd to last game of the regular season @ Northwestern St. 45-27. Counting the playoffs, the Kats were 11-3 in 2004.

Penn at Brown '98:
Jim Finn scores 4 TD's for the Quakers. There is a total of 56 points scored in the 4th Quarter. With something like 50 seconds left, Penn ties it at 51 all. Brown proceeds to drive down field and score the winning TD with 7 seconds left. Final score: 58-51 Brown. I've never seen two defenses melt down simultatenously before. Both teams scored on every possesion in the 4th Qtr. It came down to whomever had the ball on offense last.

1998 Citadel at Wofford.
Citadel blocks a field goal attempt that would have put the game out of reach. A few plays later with the clock winding down, our TE Jason Barley catches a pass around midfield and rumbles the rest of the way for the go-ahead score. 20-14, ballgame.
I jump out of the stands onto the field and high-five every player I can find..
Not long after, a Wofford friend graciously invited my crew back to their fraternity house. The College of Charleston girls that had made the trip with us stand up on the railing of the back deck and begin chanting Citadel cheers at the top of their lungs. Doing the quick math and realizing that we were outnumbered by about 10-1 by Woffy frat boys, we grabbed the girls and showed ourselves to the door..It took some smooth diplomatic talking to get out of there unscathed..

2003 Citadel vs. Furman: A game where it literally felt like the old Johnson Hagood stadium was going to crumble under our feet from people jumping in the stands. QB Willie Simmons makes the longest 3 yard TD run you've ever seen. He steps back, reverses field, jukes and jives, reverses field again, then takes off from the 5 yard line and lands with the ball just in the end zone. 10-9 Citadel. Again, I run down on the field, run straight out to my car, drive to Columbia, find an amazing parking spot on Bluff Rd. beside Williams Brice stadium, and rush in just in time to see LSU put a spanking on the South Carolina Gamecocks. Had Carolina won, it would have been a great end to an exciting day..

2004 was a great year. One of my greatest games to see was the spanking we put on the Griz in Huntsville. Have been to Missoula twice in freezing cold weather to watch us get beat, but it was great to get them in the 90+ degree heat that day. Hopefully we can renew the series again. We finally got ours that day...



I think the temps in the 2001 & 2004 UM-SHSU playoff games in Missoula were in the 40s-50s. :thumbsup:

I don't know if anybody posted this one but For me it would be Liberty-VMI Homecoming 2003.

Liberty was down 28-3 going into the 4th quarter. I was down at field level helping some of the band pack up after the halftime performance and I said to somebody "How cool would it be if LU came back and won this game...: I had know idea how prophetic those words were...

Not long after that Eugene Goodman scores a touchdown. LU nails the PAT 28-10. Then after a VMI three and out, Goodman scores again. 2 pt conversion no good 28-16. VMI three and out again. LU gets a huge roughing the passer penalty to keep the drive alive, and Gus Condon hits Lauren Williams for a key 4th down conversion. Goodman scores from 5 yards out, PAT good, 28-23. The crowd is starting to feel it. VMI turns it over again. Liberty gets it back. Eugene Goodmad plunges un from one yard out with 10 seconds to go! LU 29-VMI 28. Dre Barnes takes teh direct snap and goes in for 2! LU 31 VMI 28. VMI tries a hail mary as time expires...it falls incomplete...the students rush the field...but hold the phone...penalty on LU. One untimed play...the receiver catches a crossing route over the middle...30 yards later he is tackled well short of the end zone, final score LU 31 VMI 28

11/10/79... Delaware @ YSU...

the top two teams in DII met at Youngstown. YSU was a perfect 9-0 and UD 8-1. YSU jumped on UD early and led big... 31-7 at the half. YSU fans were crowing pretty good and their PA announcer even got into the act... but their celebration proved to be premature as the Hens came storming back... scoring a TD on every possession of the 2d half to come away with a 51-45 win.

The same two teams met a month later in the DII title game and once again UD came from behind to win... 38-21.

It was mentioned on ESPN in 2004 that the temp at gametime in Missoula was 58 degrees and the temp in Huntsville was 64. Geeze you guys have little tolerance for a little temperture drop. LOL

Greatest Games That I've Been to:

1. WKU/WIU 2002 Playoff Game at Hanson Field - WIU blows a 28-14 third quarter lead and a 61 yard field goal by Scifres comes up just short on WKU's run to the national title, even though we lost still a heck of a game.

2. WIU/LSU - Once again even though it was a 35-7 loss, game was 13-7 LSU late into the third quarter and we were playing tough right with them, their starters were in the entire game. LSU went on to win the national title that year too.

3. WIU/Montana - I wish I could have been there. Up and down game that went into OT, that WIU won by blocking a FG attempt.

My favorite part of that game was the two-point conversion right after Felton's TD. We in purple are always on the edge of our seats whenever Bobby goes for two to begin with...the end-around to Isaac West, looks like he'll get caught 5 yards in the backfield, then he gases it, pointing (or holding up "#1", it's hard to tell) his way to the endzone. Thankfully, a photographer from the Greenville News was about 10 feet away, and captured the image. I get chills everytime I see it.

I was about 1 month old during the '85 NC game, but maybe that's better...I could have been scarred.

My first memory of life was actually at Paladin stadium, against (I think) UTC. I watched the '88 NC on TV at 3 years-old, was at the '89 blizzard semi-final game vs. Stephen F. Austin (and cried).

Unfortunately, by the time I got old enough to truly appreciate football, the mid-90's hit. I have wiped most of that period of Furman football from my memory. Losing to Wofford in '98 (I'm from Spartaburg, that was highly annoying to live with) was the capper.

Anyways, back to the point of the thread:

1999: 35-21 over Appalachian State: exciting simply for the promise that the glory days were returning.

2000: 45-10 over #1 Georgia Southern: Louis Ivory rushes for 301 yards, on my birthday, no less. Not as exciting as others, but the most fun game I've ever been to.

2001 Playoffs: 24-20 over Western Kentucky: Louis Ivory injured, FB Al Means (I think it was him, at least) busts through the hole on the very next play for a long touchdown to give the Paladins the win over a very tough (not to mention huge) Western Ky. squad.

2004: 29-22 over Georgia Southern (see post above): my freshman year at Furman, so experiencing this as a student has been the pinnacle of my Furman football experience.

2004 Playoffs: 14-13 loss to James Madison: I cried. Well, not really. But my friend did.

2005: 34-31 over App. State: I cannot describe the feeling I had, rushing the field, thinking that the App monkey was finally off our back. Then my dad had to ruin it by saying that he "didn't think it was over quite yet." Then App had to ruin it further proving him right in the playoffs.

It's hard to beat the 2000 NC game between GSU and Montana.

Two great teams slugging it out to the last play and some of the individual efforts in that game were incredible. From the great efforts by John Edwards and Yo Humphrey to the "son of the run" to the fake punt TD by Montana to GSU's Ryan Hadden's fingertip interception in the end zone with about a minute left, it was truly a championship effort by two great teams full of great players.
