Couldn't agree less.

IMO the only thing asinine is the NCAA's asertion that in any way they should decide for a college / university what an appropriate mascot name / athletic logo might be. In no way should they be involving themselves in deciding what just might be offensive to this or that group.

I will become a fan of any school that fights this mandate and a non-fan of any wieny school that caves. Some things are worth fighting about. This is one of them IMO.

This is about more than two feathers. Read the rebuttal, and you'll see that this is about how the NCAA operates. The process with W&M highlights a mindset at the NCAA which could lead to all manner of intrusive meddling. If a school satisfies your criteria, then just change the criteria. They are now passing judgement on fans, players and opponents based not on behavior or intent, but on their belief in the "probability" of future behavior and intent. It's not the logo that's being judged, it's the people.

What's next? Cannons and muskets creating an atmosphere that condones violence? Chicken mascots condoning cruelty to animals? Self studies on the care and handling of living mascots? Don't put anything past these liberal PC whackos. They show their depth of character by cow-towing to FSU, whose mascot and imagery is recognized widely as "hostile and abusive".

I'm with W&M on this. The NCAA is wrong. The local VA. tribes who should be the ones wronged are not complaining.

Let's say UD's mascot is the Nanticokes (an existing tribe in Delaware) and the tribe says "go ahead use our name, maybe this will get us a casino in Georgetown" Why should the NCAA nannyism screw up the deal?????

The NCAA is the wrongheaded one here and not W&M. I give W&M as many feathers as they want.

Why can't the NCAA find the violators of their current rules (Maurice Clarett, Reggie Bush) and keep them from effecting DI-a National Football Championships but they can spend tons of time and energy on the 2 feathers of W&M??????????????

The NCAA administrators are the ones who have their priorities screwed up. Hey, I call 'em like I see them - if you see it differently, great, more power to you. What I see are schools like W&M and North Dakota breaking out all the stops including legal options to defend something that they say is all about principle when to me, all that they are defending is some insignificant portion of their school identity. I'm not arguing that the NCAA is right in this case - I think they have a lot more important things to do rather than pursue topics like this, but just because they are wrong in their mindless pursuit doesn't make a dogged fight against it any more noble. In these cases, IMO, both North Dakota and William and Mary have sunken to the NCAA's level in debating the esoteric, and often strained, importance of trivial symbols or names that they have chosen to attach to their athletic teams. When there is story after story of academic malfeaseance, illegal benefits received by student athletes, questionable means of obtaining high school diplomas to play college sports, and probably illegal substence use in many college sports, to go toe to toe with the NCAA over this silly topic does nothing to correct the NCAA's wayward attention, in fact it just extends it even further.
