View Full Version : Lehigh and Penn State to form new BCS conference?
Lehigh Football Nation

Wow! I just heard through "unnamed sources" that Penn State, Delaware, Lehigh, Colgate, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Pitt, Central Florida and East Carolina are going to form an Eastern BCS conference to replace the Big East.
Villanova, Georgetown and Lafayette are pissed that they've being left out. They're banding together with VCU, Duquesne, Boston University and Drexel to form their own Eastern-based conference, hoping to attract Temple, Navy, and Appalachian State from the broken-apart Big East.
Meanwhile, Liberty and JMU mull things over - join this mega-conference or is the Big Ten beckoning?
It makes about as much sense as anything else there right now. xlolx

Great, on the outside looking in. Guess we have to drop football again while we watch a BSC/NEC/CAA/SOCON merger get the rules amended to move a whole conference up to FBS

NEWS FLASH - the way things are going, by 2016 the PL will become what the Big East was supposed to be to begin with, albeit slightly less parochial. Georgetown is in; Villanova will join. Boston College will suffer some sort of crisis/scandal/you-name-it and it, too, will come a-calling. Maybe even the Rutgers 1000 group will win its litigation and the Scarlet Knights come back home to to PL. You'll have gotten your wish.

Maybe all northeastern colleges at every level should secede from the NCAA. We could then just shuffle and re-deal. It could create some nice new rivalries and we could go back to not giving a damn about all those fly-over places or anything south of the M-D line.

As we all know in the northeastern part of the country college athletics are a bonus to the college experience, they are not THE experience as they are in some other locales of the U.S.
Maybe the NCAA should just go to regionalization...

Did some non-FCS conference touch you in a naughty place when you were little? These guys spreading rumors that you're so upset about are usually right way before anyone else catches wind of the info. Georgia State and Yeager denied our leaving till the day before the announcement. VCU is out. Georgia Mason is out.

You can go on: the C-USA/MWC merger, Texas to the Pac-12... all supposedly "done deals" that were later proven false. Every year there are probably 1/2 dozen of these things. Separating fact from fiction isn't always easy.
Except for my "unnamed sources", of course. Penn State and Lehigh in a new BCS conference is a "done deal"! xlolx

Texas State to Sun Belt is still on the table when UNT gets grabbed by CUSA. Nobody really knows(or cares) what the WAC is going to do, but if they plan on not going away, they will undoubtedly grab from western FCS schools.

CUSA/MWC merger wasn't a crazy rumor by an unnamed source. That is something both organizations were actively and publicly trying to negotiate. I got nothing on Texas to PAC-12. That's dumb.

What about both? CUSA without a merger means they have to take more teams. Benson already said he wants to go to 12. If they take UNT AND FIU(which is mostly assumed what will happen) the Sun Belt will need 4 to get to 12. UTSA, Texas State, UNCC?, and ???.

Since this thread is devolving into other speculation, Benson is also rumored to be pursuing a WAC/Sun Belt merger. So if/when C-USA gets other schools, you could soon be treated to that fantastic Georgia State/New Mexico rivalry you've always been dreaming about.
Of course, all that drivel about "saving money on travel" will be conveniently forgotten, eh? xlolx

Also, the thing people conveniently forget when talking smack about The Alliance and travel costs, is that they will still have regional divisions and won't play teams across the country very often if at all except in Championship Game scenarios.

Utah State and San Jose State are set to leave the Western Athletic Conference to join the Mountain West Conference in 2013, according to a report in the Salt Lake Tribune.
The newspaper, citing anonymous sources, reported the switch will become official in the next seven to 10 days.
Utah State athletic director Scott Barnes cautioned that the deal was not yet final, but sources told the Tribune that "the move will happen, barring something totally unforeseen."
The Mountain West is planning a partnership with Conference USA that would create a new league with as many as 24 schools. Recent reports indicate that a planned merger of the two leagues probably won't happen. But a football championship game between the two conferences remains a possibility.
Texas-San Antonio is set to join Conference USA, and UTSA officials have told regents that three other WAC members have declared their intentions to defect. Utah State and San Jose State would account for two of them, though its not clear which other of the remaining football-playing WAC teams -- Idaho, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech, or Texas State -- would also leave the conference.
University of Texas System Board of Regents has scheduled a vote for Wednesday, and chancellor Francisco Cigarroa has recommended approving the move only months before UTSA is set to begin its first season in the WAC.
Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson and Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky toured Utah State's campus in March, according to the Tribune.

So the WAC is dead now for sure.
I think so.
In 1996, the Western Athletic Conference was big. Really, really big. A record 16 teams big, making it the largest Division I-A football conference in the land.
"In retrospect we were probably ahead of our time when we expanded from 10 to 16 ," WAC interim commissioner Jeff Hurd said Monday night. "I find it ironic that most of the conference realignment issues that are happening today are because the conferences are getting bigger."
The WAC's 1996 membership spanned the globe from Hawaii to Oklahoma. They were literally busting at the seams. Now less than 20 years later, they've gone bust.
The WAC is on its death bed as an FBS conference. If you're a friend of the WAC, you still have 13 months to pay your last respects. Before long it will be time to read the WAC its last rites. Go ahead and start carving the tombstone.

Here lies a conference who accomplished great things in its 50 years on Earth.
The WAC was taken too much soon.
It was a beloved conference.

The WAC had no original members remaining--the oldest program for this fall dates back to the 1996 season. If you don't have a core, the newcomers have less reason to stay.
Original members of the major conferences still in their leagues after 2013:
ACC: 6 (Duke, Clemson, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State, Wake)
Big East: 5 (Connecticut, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's)
Big 10: 6 (Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, Wisconsin)
Big 12: 8 (Baylor, Kansas, K-State, Iowa St., Oklahoma, Okla. St., Texas, Texas Tech)
Conference USA: 2 (UAB, Tulane)
MAC: 1 (Ohio)
Mountain West: 5 (AFA, Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV, Wyoming)
Pac-12: 8 (Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State)
SEC: 10 (Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Miss. State, Tennessee, Vandy)
Sun Belt: 1 (South Alabama)

And...the original members of the I-AA conferences still in their leagues after 2013:
Big Sky: 3 (Montana St., Idaho St., Weber)
Big South: 4 (Charleston Southern, Coastal, Radford, Winthrop)
CAA: 4 (For now anyway, G. Mason, J. Madison, UNC-Wilmington, W&M)
Ivy: 8 (All of them, of course)
Missouri Valley: None
MEAC: 4 (Del St., Howard, NC A&T, South Carolina St.)
NEC: 6 (FDU, R. Morris, LIU, SF PA, SF NY, Wagner)
OVC: 3 (EKU, Murray St., Morehead St.)
Patriot: 5 (Colgate, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Lafayette)
Pioneer: 4 (Butler, Drake, Dayton, Valpo)
Southern: None
Southland: None
SWAC: 1 (Prairie View A&M)

But these conferences were formed from the foundations of older conferences, and are not legecy conferences.
The MWC was formed in 1999 by a splinter-group from the super-sized WAC.
C-USA was formed in 1995 by the merger of the Metro Conference and Great Midwest Conference.
And of course, the Big 12 is really just an expansion and rechartering of the old Big 8.

Perhaps, but by that definition most I-A conferences are not legacy conferences, among them the ACC (from the SoCon), the SEC (also from the SoCon), the Pac-12 (from the AAWU and Pacific Coast Conferences), and the WAC (Skyline, Border).
