I don't see Retro's poll as out of line. All of us are just guessing right now anyway. Did anyone have James Madison picked last year at this time to win the National Championship? I don't even know if anyone thought they would be in the top 10 or even top 25. How many people picked Delaware the year before?
I think anyone who is picking Northwestern State to be ahead of Montana is not thinking straight (except for Northwestern State fans). Northwestern has played Montana head-to-head several times now (at least three in the last 10 years) and has not beaten them. Last year's first round playoff showed Northwestern was never really in the game (and believe me when I say I would have liked them to have beaten Montana because I will always route for teams in my conference). Montana won't be worse than they were this last year and Northwestern State certainly won't be substantially better.
I think Texas State will be substantially better, maybe even top 10 better! Point is who knows until August camp what to expect from tradional power teams and from non-traditional surprise teams. Let August camp come and go and then see if all of our projections right now are just bad "shots in the dark."

"There is no Reward without Risk"
One thing everyone should consider is that most teams who have great seasons, tend to have one thing in common.. They all have quality proven QB's... If you look back at last season, you see that all the teams that performed well into the season and playoffs, did so with proven qb's along with a decent supporting cast in most cases... I see that trend continuing this season barring some other breakout performers...
Also, I see the A-10 as very balanced conference at the top, therefore if any team has an advantage, it's delaware because they are consistent despite JMU winning it all last year and UNH and W&M also having great seasons... I think Texas state's Nealy and Montana State's Lulay will have great seasons and NAU's Murrietta will also rebound.
Harvard lost the key factor in their undefeated season and i don't expect to be as good, however they could still win the conference.

Since no other poll or magazine did better last year, let's hope our "shots in the dark" are even better this year. Of course we were the first poll last year so the others had the advantage of our poll for reference then too. :)
Are you going to do a comparison of this? I would be interested to see which poll had more top 10 picks right and top 25 picks right. how bad did AGS beat the others?
I would be interested in reading the stats on it. I bet most magazines are close to each other. I personally had 16 teams, I think, in mine.
How many did AGS, TSN, ESPN, and preseason annuals have correct compared to each other?

As does Montana. Almost always in a very big way.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't understand the high regard a lot of the AGS voters have for UNH.I think UMass will come out on top in their division of the A-10,and if the wildcats make the field of 16,I'll be shocked.

UNH has a loaded squad? Overall, they're really quite average. For example, they had a D last year that gave up a lot of points.Five starters from that defense are gone, with no experienced replacements available, and they will have a running game that is lackluster from what I can see.If you put them up against the likes of Montana,Furman,UNI,WKU,EWU,JMU,etc.,there is no comparison to be made.Santos and Ball,IMHO,won't be enough to pull it off.

May 25th, 2005, 10:16 AM
They were fine last year to pull it off and this year they have the easy schedule to go along with it. UMass has a suicide stretch of 6 games to end the season - UMass could very well beat UNH as UMass can defend the pass and UNH can't run terribly well against the very suspect run defense of UMass, but I don't think the head-to-head will matter as UNH will have the better record.

W&M and Harvard just reload at QB.
Very true. I don't know of a time in recent memeory where WM had a sub-par QB.
Dave Corley went 6-2 as a first year starter in 99 after taking over full-time as the starter in game 4 of the season.
Mike Cook lead the Tribe to a 10-3 mark and within 3 points of a final four appearence in 96. His first year as a starter.
WM has a favorable schedule and an improved running game that will allow the eventual starter (Potts or Phillips) to get comfortable behind a veteran line before the meat of the schedule.

UNH can't run terribly well against the very suspect run defense of UMass
Actually, one of the reasons UNH lost to UMass last season was they chose not to run the ball. After that game, a more balanced offense was the game plan for the rest of the season.
No doubt, RJ Harvey will be missed and I don't know enough about the redshirt freshman to know if there is a speed merchant waiting in the wings. But I do know that UNH will have a veteran O-Line with only one starter missing. IMHO, a proven, veteran line should result in an adequate running game regardless of the quality of the running backs.

Interesting development at Montana is the possible Offensive scheme this season. The Coaches studied under Urban Meyer (Utah) last summer and installed some of his Offense last season. We went to the I-AA finals with just a partial installation of the Offense and Utah went 11-1. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Griz run a 100% Urban Meyer Offense this year. We have two very mobile QB's fighting for the starting job and the Utah Offense requires a rollout right-rollout left QB from the shotgun. Look for the Gators running it this fall.

ooh buddy. you're a crazy one. Texas State at #5? I would include them in maybe the lower teens or so at the most. We haven't proven anything yet. But, I'm glad you're noticing what we have coming back for this year. And I'm guessing you got to see our team in person last year in Lake Charles? I expect NW St. to win the Southland again this year--they're crazy. But, I'm glad to know someone outside of Texas State is optomistic about our chances. hahahaha

#5 is very optimistic. I put NW State at #5 in my poll, SHSU at 15 and your Bobcats at #25. I'm expecting those three teams to compete for the SLC. SHSU or the Bobcats will be 2 or 3 in some form or another, just depends on how our QB/WR develop. Not concerned about anything else. Welcome to ASG!
