Well sometimes ya just get bored. We all like to brag or at least act like there is something to brag or post just for yucks. So I thought for yucks I would post FU's football schedule in 1906 (100 years ago). Well Furman skipped it. Went straight from 1902 to 1913 just like those years did not exist.

So I will go for 50 year and 25 years ago and if you are up to it post along. :boring: I need to read something to keep me awake today.

Livingston 48-29
Mississippi College 40-0
Liberty Baptist 64-0

JSU's first recorded season was 1904, then 1905. The record is then empty for two years, picking up again in 1908, so no 100-years-ago schedule for us, either. How about 75?

1931

tied Athens 6-6
lost to Troy 6-24 (Darnit!)
lost to Howard (now Samford) 0-31 (Ouch!)
lost to Sewanee 0-18
lost to Miami 13-14 (Fla. or Ohio?)
lost to Piedmont 6-12
lost to Rollins 14-37
lost to Birmingham Southern 0-40 (Didn't know they ever had a team)
lost to Tennessee Wesleyan 6-21

0-9-1 for the team that then was known as the Eagle Owls of Jacksonville State Teachers College. Perhaps I should have skipped the 75-year mark.

1956

beat Elon 13-12
lost to Chattanooga 0-26
lost to Austin Peay 0-7
beat South Georgia 40-0
beat Livington (now West Alabama) 22-0
beat Maryville 26-7
beat Troy 27-14 (now that's more like it!)
lost to Florence (now North Alabama) 14-27

5-3-0 for the last season as Jacksonville State Teachers College. The institution became Jacksonville State College in 1957. They'd become the Gamecocks in 1947.

1981

lost to Alabama State 14-20
beat Alabama A&M 20-9
lost to Chattanooga 3-10
beat Livingston (UWA) 48-29
beat Miles College 40-0
beat Liberty Baptist 64-0
beat Delta State 28-14
beat UT-Martin 44-7 (some things never change)
beat Troy State 31-24
beat North Alabama 21-14
lost to SW Texas (now Texas State) 22-38 at San Marcos in the D-II playoffs round 1.

8-3-0 and a Gulf South Conference title for the JSU Gamecocks, under head coach Jim Fuller (now athletics director).

(Edit: Changed the institution name for 1931 & 1956. Whoops.)

Also, 2006 marks the 70th anniversary of Fordham's great 1936 team, featuring Vince Lombardi and the "Seven Blocks of Granite." Fordham played one of the most difficult schedules in the nation and had all but sewn up a trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. But then the Rams were stunned in the last game of the season by arch-rival NYU, 7-6. Lombardi always maintained that the NYU loss was the most bitter defeat of his playing and coaching career.

1981: UD goes a cool 101 to 14 combined against the Tigers and Quackers. Nice work.

As to Colgate, hard to believe we were a major Division I team playing two home games in 1956, but a look at the all time sked shows that was an annual thing until the last decade. We finally get between 4-6 home games a year these days.

1981: UD goes a cool 101 to 14 combined against the Tigers and Quackers. Nice work.

The Hens went on to defeat Princeton 35-17 in '82 and then walloped UPenn again to the tune of 40-7 in '83.

It's speculated that these lopsided wins caused UD not to schedule future games against Ivy competition. Don't know how true that is, since the Hens don't have much of a history scheduling Ivy teams anyway. UPenn is back on early in the next decade, which is a good thing for FB in the Delaware Valley, IMO.

What was the cause of Colgate only scheduling 2 home games early on?

Colgate

1906 4-2-2

@ Cornell, tie 0-0
@ Rochester, win 18-0
Hobart, win 29-0
@ Army, tie 0-0
@ Syracuse, win 5-0
@ Lafayette, loss 17-6 (Biddle wasn't coaching!)
@ Williams, loss 23-9
@ Hamilton, win 35-16

Nothing like going 6 games into the season before giving up a point!

1956 4-5-0

Cornell, win 34-6
@ Holy Cross, loss 20-6
@ Rutgers, win 48-6
@ Princeton, loss 28-20
@ Yale, win 14-6
@ Army, loss 55-46
Bucknell, win 26-12
@ Syracuse, loss 61-7
@ Brown, loss 20-0

Nothing like having just one home game!

1981 7-3-0

@ Rutgers, loss 13-5
Lehigh, win 27-14
@ Cornell, win 34-10
Boston U, win 21-14
@ Temple, loss 31-0
Lafayette, win 30-0 (and yes, Biddle was on the staff under Dunalp this season!!!!)
@ Columbia, win 41-3
@ Syracuse, loss 47-24
Bucknell, win 24-6
@ Holy Cross, win 34-13

I think it's pretty cool that the 1906 schedule and the 1981 schedule have 3 teams in common. And that Cornell and Syracuse are on all three schedules. Time to get SU back on the sked!

One note about that 14-6 Colgate victory over Yale in '56. That was the only game Yale lost that year and it was the first year of the "official" Ivy Group. Rumor always had it that Colgate was miffed about being left out. Don't know how true that was.

The small number of home games were caused by a combination of a small home facility, bad weather. Until the late 1980's, our only periodic "home and homes" were Cornell (which has usually been a 2 for 1 arrangement), Bucknell, Lafayette, Boston University, Lehigh, Holy Cross and Rutgers. Beginning in the mid-1970's we did get a couple of southern schools to come up to Hamilton (Citadel in 1975, Davidson in 1976, and W & M in 1984 and 1987), and Temple gave us a home and home in '81-'82, but that was pretty much it. The net result was that following Colgate football required a lot of traveling.

Didn't Gil Dobie coach later coach at Cornell? I seem to remember reading that Yale and Cornell were both undefeated in 1923, but didn't play each other that year. I think Dobie was the Cornell coach.

Did Chatt and FU share the SoCon title that year?

Chattanooga shared with VMI in 1977 (Chattanooga was 9-1-1 overall, VMI was 7-4, both were 4-1 in league play) Mocs only loss that year was to...Furman 7-17 :)

Furman and Chattanooga tied for the league title in 1978 (Furman was 8-3 overall, Chattanooga was 7-3-1, both had a 4-1 league record) Chattanooga beat Furman that year in 13-9 in Greenville (it was the Mocs first ever game on TV), but later lost to WCU.

Chattanooga won the 1979 title with a 5-1 SoCon record and 9-2 overall.

In 1980 Furman went undefeated in league play, Chattanooga was runner-up.
Of course, Furman also won in 1981 and 1982 (Chattanooga was again runner-up in '82)

Chattanooga won its last title in 1984...with a weak 6-5 overall, but 5-1 in the SoCon.

After that, it was all Furman and App until 1992.

Sorry, that was a lot more info than you asked for :)

Dobie played quarterback and end at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1903, and spent two years as an assistant coach before becoming head coach at North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State) in 1906. He had a 6-0-0 record in two seasons there.

In 1908, Dobie went to the University of Washington. He spent nine seasons there and never lost a game, winning 58 while tying 3. From 1908 into 1914, Washington won 39 consecutive games.

At Navy from 1917 through 1919, Dobie had a 17-3-0 mark, then went to Cornell in 1920. He had unbeaten teams in 1921, 1922, and 1923 and was then given the first ten-year coaching contract in history. He spent a total of 16 seasons at Cornell, winning 82 games while losing 16 and tying 7.

Funny though it is, I doubt your Offense will ever go scoreless for a "whole" year again.

1937-1939 Smoky Mountain Conference

1931-1960 North State Conference

1940-1960 Independent

1961-1969 Carolinas Conference (at the time, I'm sure we didn't see this as the future of the Socon)

1970-1970 Independent

1971-Current Southern Conference

2005 Media Guide, pages 188-193 has us in the North State Conference from 31-62, then Carolinas until 68, Independent until 71, then SoCon. Wonder if it's an error?

What conference was ASU in prior to the SoCon?

From 1931 thru 1960 ASTC was in the North State Conference which was re-named the Carolinas Conference in 1961. ASU left in '67 to go division I. Record in the North State/Carolinas was 126-56-6. At the time, ASTC was very much a small college and produced mostly teachers.

Our first year in the SoCon was 1972. Good luck to you guys.

Thanks, not too much info. I do remember the late 70's ( I graduated in '79) and remember that Chatt was the team to beat. For some reason I thought we shared a title in the early 80's. Doesn't sound like it though. I remember '84, Furman had a very good team, I think we were 8-3 beat NC State but missed the playoffs.

[/B]

Fordham and Delaware have played five times, and the Rams lead the series, 4-1. The first game was 1902, which Delaware won.

Fordham won the games in 1903, 1904, 1905, and 1906. You would think, given the relative proximity of the schools, that a series that started in 1902 would have been played more than five times.

I'd really like to see a Fordham-Delaware game played regularly. But I suspect our historical advantage would evaporate.
