Many championship venues were determined and lots of other things were decided...heck, even Myles Brand stopped by...

Southland Conference Wraps Up 2006 Spring Meetings
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Central Arkansas becomes full SLC members July 1.

Among the highlights of the gathering were the Hall of Honor Induction ceremony, as well as a visit and presentation from NCAA President Dr. Myles Brand, who addressed both the Southland Advisory Council and Board of Directors.

Other meeting highlights included: · Dr. James Gaertner, president of Sam Houston State, will assume a two-year term as Chair of the Board of Directors on July 1, and Dr. Stephen Hulbert, president at Nicholls State, will serve as Chair-Elect.

· Dr. Billy Bond, institutional representative at Southeastern Louisiana, starts a two-year term as President of the Advisory Council on July 1, while Do Bonin, senior woman administrator at Nicholls State, becomes Vice President, and Bobby Williams, athletics director at Sam Houston State, begins a term as Secretary-Treasurer.

· The Board of Directors approved a final package of legislation intended to improve sporting conduct among game participants and fans at Southland events.

· The Advisory Council, Board of Directors and basketball coaches reviewed and discussed plans for the single-site 2007 O'Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament. A more detailed media announcement on the event is coming in the next few weeks.

· The Finance Committee and Board of Directors approved the league's 2006-07 operating budget, and approved the league's increased NCAA Basketball Tournament revenue distribution formula in the aftermath of Northwestern State's victory over Iowa.

· A detailed presentation and update on the NCAA Academic Performance Program, including impacts of Academic Progress Reports and the new Graduation Success Rate metric.

· The following list of future championship dates and sites were approved: ^ Cross Country, Oct. 27, 2007 hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi. ^ Women's Soccer, Nov. 1-4, 2007, hosted by Northwestern State. ^ Women's Volleyball, Nov. 16-18, 2007, hosted by Texas-San Antonio. ^ Indoor Track & Field, Feb. 15-16, 2008, conducted at the University of Houston. ^ Softball, May 9-11, 2008, hosted by Texas State. ^ Outdoor Track and Field, May 2-4, 2008, hosted by Sam Houston State. ^ Baseball, May 28-June 1, 2008, hosted by Sam Houston State.

Determination of 2007-08 sites for men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's golf will be made at a later date.

· A review and approval of a new host rotation plan for Outdoor Track and Field Championships for 2008 and beyond. Sam Houston State will begin the new rotation in 2008, and will be followed by Texas-Arlington (2009), Texas-San Antonio (2010) and Texas State (2011). As other facilities are upgraded to Conference championship specifications, other campuses may join the rotation.

· Approval of combining the Men's and Women's Tennis Championships into one event.
