GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach Bobby Lamb announced today
that defensive lineman Sam Wilson has joined the Paladin program following
one year at Southern Mississippi.

Wilson, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound defensive tackle, will enroll in summer
school at Furman beginning next week and will have four years of
eligibility remaining according to Lamb.

"We're happy to have Sam join our program," said Lamb on Tuesday. "We
knew about him out of high school, and we're glad he's now a Paladin."

A resident of Destin, Fla., he attended Darlington (Ga.) School his junior
and senior seasons and played offensive guard and defensive end. He
earned first team All-Northwest Georgia and all-area honors as an
offensive lineman his senior year. On defense he registered 43 tackles,
including nine tackles-for-loss, 15 hurries, four sacks, and two forced
fumbles in helping his squad to an 8-3 record in 2004. He was rated a
two-star (5.0) recruit out of high school by rivals.com.

Furman returns 15 starters, including eight defensive regulars, off its
2005 squad that posted an 11-3 record and No. 3 ranking in the final
Sports Network NCAA I-AA poll.

Glad to hear he has four years.

That's not a transfer. That's a redshirt freshman:nod:

Nah, people will still call him a transfer, even 4 years from now. We had a few of those from KC's first year and wouldn't you know it, it was brought up everytime. You just can't get through to some people. :bang:

Honestly , I don't mind transfers as long as they are not overused. (Guess that should not be surprising since we had one of the more famous ones).

They should have at least two years eligibility and hopefully make up less than 10% of the team.

I agree with Ol FU...transfers should have at least 2 years of eligibility remaining. Every year a team will unexpectedly end up losing a player or two to injuries, grades, or other reasons. It makes sense for a team to keep open the option for one or two transfers per year for those circumstances. Beyond this, I think it becomes a problem if a team is getting 4-5 transfers per year, especially for those that were recruited out of high school. I like the idea of developing a player from within...otherwise it becomes too much like the pro free agent market. You have a good player on a team for a year or two max, and he's gone.

I wonder if the Chris Stone rumors are true, he never really panned out at Clemson. He was a helluva player at Eastside and would provide alot of depth help at safety.

Another thing is that neither Wilson nor Stone (should he transfer) are guys who will come in and definitely start, like some I-A transfers. Wilson is a nice pick up because he has 4 years and interior DL is Furman's weakest position probably.

I wonder if Stone is athletic enough to play CB? The Paladins have more need there than at safety.

Stone has walked on at Furman and is on the roster. He had an injury early on at Clemson. I think he will add quality depth at safety and could be an impact player on special teams.

Sam Wilson on the other hand, will challenge for a starting position. But that's just my opinion:D
