yes, the Raiders had a nice season last year, but they haven't consistently been in the top 3 of the PL as the other, hence did not enter my thought process while typing. PL should be very, very competitive from top to bottom this year.

Lehigh came out flat, falling into a 6-1 hole and never recovered against #10 Villanovak, 17-7. Disappointing after beating the Wildcats at their place last year. Shows Caccesse still has work to do. Still a pretty talented bunch, so this should serve as the "proverbial wake-up call" if they have the right leadership.

Lehigh's 13-0 shutout of Manhattan, yesterday was the first shut out recorded by Lehigh in 40 years! The last coming in 1972 in a 10-0 win over Gettysburg. Also, it was the first shut out in the NCAA in almost two years, with the last being a SBU 15-0 win over Albany in 2010. Lehigh outshot the Jaspers, 47-8.
Mountain Hawks travel to #17 U of Penn on Tuesday, then on to #4 UNC on Saturday, then traveling to VMI on March 6 before next home game.

Lehigh knocked of #18 Penn at U of Penn today by a 10-4 score. A big win in knocking off a preseason top 20 team and another strong defensive effort coming on the heels of the shutout over Manhattan. Penn did not score until 5 min. remained in the second quarter. Lehigh now travels to #4 UNC on Saturday to enjoy their 'spring break'. Huge challenge, but a great measuring stick.

Lehigh STUNNED #4 NORTH CAROLINA on Saturday, 9-8, AT CHAPEL HILL! Maybe the biggest win in LU LAX in decades. Last time Lehigh beat UNC was 1951! Mountain Hawks outshot the Tar Heels 28-27, lead in ground balls, 31-23 and shut out UNC on the 'man-ups' (0-3). Game was tied 5-5 at the half, and Lehigh lead 9-6 with 2:30 left in the game when UNC scored twice within 25 seconds to pull within one, but they got no more. With the win, LU now 4-1 and I would think starts getting some Top 20 consideration after beating #18 Penn on the road earlier in the week. Team travels to VMI before returning home.

#14 Lehigh throttled #15 Yale, today, 11-7 and it wasn't that close. Lehigh lead 11-5 with 2 minutes to go when the Eli got two late goals against the scrubs. Other than a brief burst in the second period when Yale came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie, were the Eli 'in the game'. LU went into the break with a 6-4 lead and never looked back. Host Army to open PL play next Saturday.

I'm not thrilled with Lafayette thus far - losing to Rutgers in a game we should have won, and then falling to Navy on Saturday after holding the lead. Our transition game flat out stinks. I was at both of these games - maybe I should just stop attending!

Our wins over Providence and Wagner are simply games we should have won to begin with. Now we face undefeated Fairfield, followed by those evil Bucknell Buffalo Jumpers.

I'd like to see PL teams do well in the NCAAs this year, and I think the league will will well. I just don't want one of them to be Lehigh, of course. xrolleyesx

That said, having the Brown Panties put down North Carolina was pretty sweet for the PL crowd.

Top-drawer Patriot League lacrosse Friday night (March 30) at 7:00 PM on CBS Sports - #7/8 Lehigh vs. #20 Navy, at Annapolis.

You should watch becasue this is going to be a no finesse, knock-down, drag-off kind of game. Fast and brutal. Navy's R.J. Wickham will be the best goalie you've ever seen, but Lehigh's Dave DiMaria and those Lao-Gosney twins (just think of the Winklevii) will fire at him mercilessly.

Four of the top 20 teams this week are Patriot League. The PL often sucks less than we're given credit for.

Got home late last night and watched the tape of Navy-Lehigh without knowing result beforehand. I must say the first quarter looked liked the Mountain Hawks legs had stayed on the bus. Navy controlled about 11 minutes of the first 15, and then about 5 min. into the second quarter, it was like a switch had been turned on, and down 4-1, Lehigh clamps down on the Middies and shuts them out for 42 minutes, while scoring 8 unanswered. Keep in mind, this was without their #1 scorer DeMaria who was suspended for the game for violating some team rule, and their #2 Fantini who was playing/limping on a bad wheel and still scored a goal and had 3 assists. I agree the L-G twins really stepped up to fill the void, but the defense was the number one reason the game turned around. Great teams start with great defense. PL a very tough league this year.

Next week, the League tournament. On Friday, the Raiders host #4 seeded Bucknell in a rematch at 5:00 pm, with Lehigh and Navy facing off at 8:00 pm. Both games televised on CBS Sports Network

Ah, hem...Co-regular season champions with Lehigh who thrashed Laughyette today, 16-6. Both Colgate and Lehigh finish 5-1. Granted, Raiders get to host tournament due to the head to head win. Also, reported on Lehigh website that Lehigh will be playing Army, not Navy, which I think is correct as Army beat Navy last week. Lehigh now ranked #10.

Top seed getting it done, Colgate tops Bucknell 14-9 in the PL Semifinal. Peter Baum notched 9 points (5G-4A); he leads the nation in scoring with 77 points, second all-time in single season Colgate history behind Bob Woodruff (82), and his 56 goals is now a school record

The Raiders move to 12-2 overall (a new school record) with 2 games and a probable NCAA tournament bid remaining

Next, the Patriot League Championship. #1 Colgate battles #2 Lehigh on Sunday afternoon. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network starting at 3 eastern

Lehigh dominated Army last night, 13-7. Was actually shocked due to the close regular season game at Lehigh a month ago (7-6). Lehigh's D was stifling. It should be a down to the wire affair like the regular season game. Obviously, winning the PL is the goal, but I think the loser still should get an at-large bid to the NCAA. Really cool that Cassese put in some senior who hadn't played much this year, and the one, who got to start against Laughyette last week and scored 5 goals, also scored a goal last night. Temp was slightly above freezing. Sunday's afternoon game is projected to be sunny with a high of 50 degrees.

Just short. Colgate falls 16-14 to Lehigh in the PL title game. Hawks went up 4-0 after the 1st, and while the Raiders came close on several occasions, they never could get all the way back

The Raiders fall to 12-3 overall

Colgate gets one more regular season contest to burnish their NCAA credentials as Maryland comes to Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. Hate to think a tourny birth would come down to whether or not the 'Gate beats the Terps, but, well, you'll forgive my skepticism....

That was a wild game in Hamilton today. Lehigh's hot start really put Colgate on its heels and in a hole from which it could never fully recover despite several 'runs' that pulled the Raiders withing two goals on several occasions, only to be met by a counter Lehigh run. Mountain Hawks appeared to be a bit more balanced in attack while Colgate's Baum was kept under wraps for most of the first half. Another key was goaltending. While giving up 14 goals wouldn't be considered a 'great' defensive game, Colgate had about twice as many "man up" advantages so Poillon was under a lot of pressure and came up big several times. Baum got unleashed moreso in the second half and really showed what a weapon he can be. A nice crowd at Andy Kerr Stadium, too. Looked like about 3000 or so in attendance. Good luck against Maryland. PL should get two teams in this year. I'm hoping Lehigh gets to host a first round game the weekend of May 12.

Lehigh beat Colgate, 16-14, in a wild PL tournament final. The vaunted Lehigh defense almost didn't hold. This was a nationally-broadcast game and was one of the best, most exciting games I've seen in a while. PL lax has become hard core. Congrats to the Brown Panties for schooling us all once again.

Lehigh now has the PL auto bid to the 16-team NCAA tournament. They are the first of seven automatic qualifiers. The other conferences that get auto bids are America East, Big East, CAA, ECAC, Ivy and MAAC. That leaves nine at-large qualifiers. The ACC has only four lacrosse-playing teams (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Duke) so it doesn't get an auto bid, but it's pretty certain that all four ACC teams will get at-large bids. Hopkins almost certainly will get an at-large bid, too.

Realistically, that leaves four open spots for the rest of the field. I'm betting the farm that Colgate will get one of those four spots, especially if they beat Maryland in their final regular season game on Saturday. That would mean that the PL would have a first-ever two teams in the tournament. Lehigh might even get a home game.

Bucknell is on the bubble and could sneak past Cornell and Syracuse for the final at-large spot. The Bison could even slip past North Carolina if N.C. somehow tanks against lowly Michigan this weekend. I don't think the committee is quite ready to hand the PL three tournament spots just yet, though.

Anyhow, the way things are shaping up, it's entirely possible that we could see a Duke vs. Lehigh game in the elite eight or final four. Maybe even the championship. Wouldn't that be fun?

Actually, the PL got 3 teams in 2004: Army, Navy and Hobart. Navy went all the way to the title game that year, losing to Syracuse. Both academies went again in 2005, while Colgate and Navy both went in 2008

I have to believe Colgate gets in if they beat Maryland. It's losing to the Terps that puts them in a tough spot, and being the last team out last year, well, the skeptic in me says they really need to beat Maryland. Also rooting for all the favorites in the conference tournaments

Bucknell isn't getting in. 9-7 overall, finished 4th in the League, lost their last 3 (and 4 of their last 5), best win against Penn State? Seems highly unlikely

I forgot about Hobart! I remember that Navy vs. Syracuse game very well. I was exhausted just watching it. I'm also negligently overlooking participation by the academies. Ive been a lax player and fan for so long, I still tend to separate Army and Navy from the rest of the PL. No longer. It's so ironic that two PL teams likely will be in the tournament but neither will be named Army or Navy.

I think Colgate gets in this year even if they don't beat Maryland. Their record and SOS support it. Colgate's one-point loss to Navy doesn't look so bad now that Navy beat Hopkins. In fact, I think Colgate will get a seed if they beat Maryland. The game apparently will be on Time Warner Cable in upstate New York and on Colgate's all-access. I really wish ESPN3 would show this one.

Lehigh should be a 6 or 7 seed. Will they play at Ulrich or Goodman? 'Cause I'm going (notwithstanding the foul emanations of the place). I'd expect about 5,000 give or take to attend, depending on the opponent. Might draw Villanova or Princeton in the first round.

Albany beat UMBC in Baltimore today, 19-8, and will face the Seawolves in the AE final. Albany really has resurrected its season after a poor start this year. Stony Brook should have the edge in the title game, especially at home, but the game last Saturday in Albany was a close one.

However - no team in the AE with an overall winning record this season? An auto bid is at stake, but I smell a 16 seed for the victor either way.

Maryland @ Lehigh for this weekend sold out immediately, including SRO/lawn seats. I had zero chance to get a ticket. Maryland fans are crying foul at having to travel. Apparently, Lehigh has no right whatsoever to be better than, and be seeded higher than, an ACC team.

Not So Bold Prediction - Lehigh will beat Maryland, just as Colgate did. It will be Lehigh vs. Hopkins, not Maryland vs. Hopkins, in the quarterfinals (assuming Hopkins beats Stony Brook). With possible a Colgate/Duke matchup in the quarterfinals as well, that could be quite a weekend for PL lacrosse.

Lehigh's dedicated, lacrosse-only stadium is the size of a good DIII football stadium. It should look great on ESPN.

Not sure how many people they're going to let into the complex. They sold over 2,000 for the Bucknell game and a few hundred were watching from outside the complex on the adjacent field hockey field. They could have decided the week prior to play in Goodman, but the team wanted to play on their 'home' field as playing in Goodman would have a 'different' feel being grass versus the sportsturf at Ulrich. Weather looks great at the moment. Temps at faceoff time should be in the 60's and clear.

Very tough loss to take. Such a poor start digging themselves a 6-1 hole. Reminded me of the Navy game after a long bus trip. Maybe the two week layoff accounts for the slow start, but once they got the lead they just made too many errors giving possession back to the Twerps. One has to use a lot of energy making the climb back, but you'd think once they took the lead the second wind would kick in. Too many unforced errors--especially by the goalie, who was very good between the pipes, but made some horrible decisions/executions on outlet passes. Maryland is a big, tough team, but not a better team, talent wise. Their "let the air out of the ball", "Four corners" delay offense is going to result in a shot clock being instituted, just like what happened in college basketball.Good Luck against the "Dookies". Lehigh's basketball coach was in the stands last night. I was hoping his "ACC magic trick" would rub off.

And it started so well. Colgate led 4-2 late in the 1st, and visions of an upset danced in Raider heads. #3 Duke then scored the next 13 goals en route to winning 17-6. The wheels came off in the 2nd quarter, when a variety of errors and turnovers led to a huge run for the Devils

Colgate finishes the year at 14-4, one of the best seasons in school history

The first year of the Murphy regime is a successful one, and now it's on him to keep the program moving forward. Peter Baum returns, 2 goals away from passing Bob Woodruff for most in program history, as does talented freshman Ryan Walsh. Raiders might be the favorites in the PL next year, and will vie for another NCAA birth

Several southern lacrosse programs, I think, play independently. Not sure if that's an option.

I'm not sure of all the specifics, but Furman got a big grant to start a lacrosse program (like, largest single gift ever type grant). The University sees it as a gateway to national exposure on the west coast and the mid-Atlantic. I say this merely because it seems like Furman is going all-out in this regard. They hired a coach that appears to have a reputation (not some castoff or up and comer). I wouldn't be surprised to see them push for an associate membership in one of the bigger conferences. I don't imagine they are going to spend all of this money just to putt around with a bunch of small colleges.

It's an interesting endeavor. Lacrosse is virtually unknown in the deep south. Most of those young men that would otherwise be lacrosse players generally play baseball.

Granted, it has entrenched itself at a few of the private high schools in some of the bigger cities, but the vast majority of folks down here have never seen a match, nor have any idea of the rules. Even hockey is more well known.

There is a newly released movie called "Crooked Sticks" that is centered on lacrosse. Typical sentimental "David v. Goliath" type story, but has gotten some decent reviews. Two of Lehigh's players are among the lacrosse players in the movie with a few speaking lines.
