Around these parts, we are following Syracuse very closely this season. Our local high school program (which my oldest daughter is a part of) won the Pennsylvania 4-A championship for the second time in four years in June (after losing to the eventual state champs in the semifinals in 2010) and the star player from that squad, Julie Wambold (congrats, Julie, on getting your first college hit today) is now seeing action as a freshman infielder for the preseason top-25-ranked Orange. After going 3-2 in the Arizona State tournament, the Orange dropped their opener in the Palm Springs Cathedral Classic tournament, 5-2, to University of the Pacific on Friday. Syracuse was scheduled to play Northwestern late tonight, faces UC Davis and Arizona on Saturday and meets UCLA on Sunday. Tough early schedule.
Mr. C
February 25th, 2012, 01:49 PM
Our favorite Syracuse player Julie Wambold was the star in Syracuse's 9-3 victory over Northwestern Friday night. The freshman hit a grand slam and a two-run homer as well, going 2-for-4 with six RBIs in her first start of the season. Somehow, I expect she will be in the starting lineup again on Saturday against UC Davis.

Julie Wambold did it again for Syracuse in its game against UC Davis, hitting a walk-off, two-run bomb to beat the Aggies 5-3 after Syracuse rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the final two innings. Great start for my daughter Charlotte's "big sister" on the Hatboro-Horsham team. The six RBIs on Friday was one off the Syracuse single-game record and this kid has three HRs in her first 13 at-bats as a college player. Hopefully, the Orange can beat Arizona tonight.
It was also a great day for my alma mater Fresno State, with a 6-3 victory over UCLA in the same tournament. The Lady Dogs have been up and down of late, with a no-hitter and 17 strikeouts for Michelle Moses yesterday against Iowa State, followed by a 9-0 loss to Arizona (same pitcher who threw the no-hitter).

Arizona blanked Syracuse 5-0, with the Orange committing three hugh errors and wasting a bunch of offensive chances. Our favorite player, freshman Julie Wambold batted clean-up and went 1-for-3 with a walk. Syracuse had the bases loaded twice in the late innings and didn't score. The Orange close out the Cathedral Classic on Sunday against UCLA, which lost to my alma mater Fresno State, 6-3, on Saturday. First win for the Lady Dogs over their nemesis from Westwood since 2000.

Syracuse let one get away against UCLA on Sunday, losing 6-3 in the final two innings after our local girl, Julie Wambold had given the Orange a 3-1 lead in the fifth as a pinch-hitter. Funny seeing Fresno State listed as a mid-major in softball, when you consider that the Lady Bulldog have an NCAA title (1999) and a couple of other championship-game berths in their history and are the ONLY team to have qualified for EVERY NCAA Division I softball tournament. That's not the resume of a mid-major team. I don't think of Hawaii as a mid-major, either.

I came away real impressed after watching a replay of Cal hammering Stanford 9-0 on Friday in the Pac-12 opener for the two teams. The Golden Bears have to be one of the most powerful hitting teams I've seen in some time. Cal could be one of the teams to beat in Oklahoma City at the College Softball World Series.

Can a team like my alma mater, Fresno State, which has won an NCAA title, appeared in four title games and is the only program to have appeared in every championship tournament, really be considered a "mid-major"? I don't exactly consider Hawaii mid-major in softball either. Both are pretty big-time programs.

College Sports Journal is thinking of doing an All-Freshman team for NCAA softball. Would appreciate everyone's input and nominations. Wambold and Carrie-Leigh Thomas of Syracuse would be two leading candidates. Wambold leads the Big East with 11 HRs and is also first in slugging percentage as a freshman. Thomas is second on this heavy-hitting team in HRs. I was looking at the NCAA stats last weekend and saw where a girl from UTEP was leading the NCAA with 24 homers as a freshman.
