Looks like a nice class so far at GSU! Here is what I have so far for ASU:
Tysean Holloway (Asheville, NC), RB - ESPN ***, Rivals **
Dante Blackmon (Covington, GA), CB - ESPN/Rivals ***
Paul Magloire (Lynbrook, NY), QB/S - Rivals **
Barrett Burns (Woodstock, GA), TE - ESPN **
Jacquil Capel (Mount Gilead, NC), ATH
Olawale Dada (Columbus, GA), LB
Tyson Fernandez (Fuquay Varina, NC), OL
Greg Hall (Bogart, GA), LB/DE
Matthew Privette (Marshville, NC), OL
Transfers:
Quartterrio Morgan (Western Kentucky - 4 years of eligibility), RB - Rivals/ESPN ***
Alex Coulthard (UNC - 3 years of eligiblity), OL
Dylan Turner (Air Force - 3 years of eligibility), DT/DE
Recruiting is so inexact it is always hard to say who will make an immediate impact but I fully expect Morgan and Holloway to be competing for playing time at RB. Blackmon should see some time in the secondary and Coulthard (6-6, 310) could earn a spot on the OL 2-deep as well.
Paul Magloire is a great athlete and I expect the coaches will either try to get him on the field immediately in the defensive secondary or redshirt him to be groomed as a QB for the future.

App and GaSo are widening the gap between the two schools and the rest of the conference. App has also made some great coaching additions so far, each from successful FBS programs.
-Alvis Whitted added as receivers coach. Played at NCSU, NFL receiver for almost 10 years, asst. at UCLA.
-Justin Stepp added as RB coach. Asst. at Clemson.
-And everyone already knows about the return of the architect of the best FCS offense of all time, Scott Satterfield as OC.

Thanks...I was down in TX and had a hell of a good time. Hopefully we see you guys at our house again next year, although I have never been to Georgia before. haha The Bison have about nine or ten verbals as of right now with a couple of good ones out of Nebraska, which have walk on offers from the Huskers, aslo have a big ol North Dakota boy(6'7" 310)coming in to become a member of the "Rams" someday....Rams is our nickname for our O-line. I am sure one of our fans will post the list at some point. We have a real good RB out of Michigan visiting this weekend I believe, along with quite a few others.......can't wait for Feb.1st!

We have definitely had a very productive offseason that has gone about as well as any ASU fan could have hoped. While I fully expect ASU to have a good upcoming season, I think it may be 2013 before we are back among the elite. Who knows though, maybe things will get rolling a year early!

It is possible that he committed verbally in December and opened his options back up, because he is going to be in Boone for a visit on Saturday. Of course I have no idea where he stands but until signing day, nothing is set in stone. Neither Rivals or ESPN has him as a commitment to either school.

I believe hes committed. There have been a few published articles naming all state teams and so forth the past few weeks that list him as committed. He could be taking all of his visits but we'll see. I'm sure some of our commits have taken visits to other schools and we have some commits of other schools in for visits as well. Can't blame a kid for that. We'll know on signing day. Where did you see he is visiting ASU this weekend?
And FWIW, heres the excerpt from the AJC: Dutchtown High School defensive tackle Darian Small (6-2, 285) committed to Georgia Southern. “Georgia Southern has really recruited Darian hard the past month,” Dutchtown assistant Terry Herrod said. “His best football is ahead of him. He has the frame to add 15 pounds and not lose any speed or quickness. He will play NG and DE in their scheme.” - AJC

I know that some ASU commits are also taking visits elsewhere since nothing is set in stone yet. It was reported on our Rivals site just today that he is coming, he confirmed it with our beat writer. Not sure how much I am able to post since it is a pay site but he apparently has offers from ASU, GSU and Marshall.

Recruiting is a fun off-season topic, but I wish I had a dollar for every "awesome recruit" I've heard someone discuss, including NFL draftees, that flopped.
Conversely, there are a pile of walk-ons, JUCO, and late-round draft picks who turn out to be stars. I will say that Monken has mostly hit home-runs the last two years (knock on wood).

Unless a kid is enrolled in school already hardly any commitments to a FCS program can be taken seriously as FBS schools can flip a kid literally on signing day. It happens all the time.

Very true. Luckily for ASU, 2 of our 3 biggest recruits (RB's Tysean Holloway and Quartterrio Morgan) have already enrolled and joined the team. Our attrition to FBS programs has not been too terrible the past few years but as you said, a solid FBS program that puts in the effort could snatch them pretty much at will.
Oddly enough, ASU (as well as other FCS programs I'm sure) have turned the tables a couple of times recently on in-state FBS programs. Trevor Sawyer (East Carolina 2010) and Brandon McGowan (Wake Forest 2011) de-committed last minute to come to Boone.

Bobby Lamb was interviewed recently as Mercer's head coach (and seeking his first recruiting class). He mentioned the avalanche of calls he would recieve the day after signing day from coaches with kids that fell through the cracks. I imagine its the same for most college coaches.
Circumstances change rapidly. I, for one, have no idea how Furman gets on the radar of some of these kids, much less manages to land them. Just last year, TCU pulled its offer to Travis Eman, a Canadian born QB playing in Buffalo. He ends up at Furman and will likely start for the Paladins this season as a freshman. How a Buffalo kid that was heading to TCU ended up at Furman is beyond me.

Problem is, most FCS coaches want a bird in the hand and aren't willing to wait ... they want as close to a full class ready to go on signing day as possible for fear of left holding the bag ... but often times, there are some really good players who get dropped by FBS schools at the last minute, wait too late to commit, receive a passing test score after signing day or are simply overlooked ... and now, with the NCAA making it tougher to get JC kids into school, there may be more opportunities out there after signing day with kids who otherwise may have chosen to go the JC route, instead of signing with an FCS or D-II.

Furman has always recruited GA very well. But, it appears by the looks of the lists showing Furman interests and offers
it's expanded quite a bit with Coach Fowler at the helm. Several players are on the list outside of SC, NC, GA, TN, AL, FL, several from Kentucky, Ohio, and even California.
Concerning stacking Furman's recruiting classes with GSU, and APP. The three schools look for very different things. Furman does go head to head with both schools, we win some, they win some (Dakota Dozier and Charles Emert choose Furman over APP and GSU). I wouldn't be surprised to see Furman end up with some surprise gets this years, as in more speed on defense and at the offensive skill positions.

Not entirely accurate. It is true, Bobby Lamb recruited Atlanta hard. Not only was he from the area, his brother was a high school coach, and kids in the bigger cities tend to be able to cut it academically.
However, I'd wager Furman probably has the most state-diverse roster in the SoCon (or at least they did at one point). Naturally, they have a lot of players from Georgia and South Carolina, but they also recruit the heck out of Alabama -- where only UTC and Samford have any sort of SoCon presence. Quick look back shows that of the 22 starters that lined up against Elon this season, nine different states were represented.

A big part of "where" a coach recruits depends upon his recruiting budget. Fortunately, Georgia is fertile ground because Ga Southern can't afford to venture too far away from home.

I'm still waiting for the 1st coach to say on February 1st that "we're really disappointed with the recruiting class we got this year. There were some guys that we really wanted that went elsewhere, we'll have to overcome this over the next few seasons by practicing hard & coaching these guys up".
The fact of the matter is - every year there are schools that have bad recruiting classes. You can grade recruiting classes this winter & spring, but really the final grade for the kids that sign NLI's in less than 2 weeks won't come in until most likely December of 2015 when they've completed their junior or redshirt-sophomore year.
I'll give Villanova as just one of many examples. In '09 they win the NC, in '10 they get to the final four, in '11 they win one league game. Why? The answer is a few years ago Andy Talley lied on NLI day - the classes he brough in 2 years in a row did not pan out & they were forced to play a slew of true & red-shirt FR this past season, going 2-9 and losing to teams like Monmouth at home.
Fact of the matter is NLI day is like Opening Day in MLB - everyone feels good & has a shot. The reality is - some of these classes are great & some just stink...

He committed to us in December. It was in the Atlanta Journal Constitution with quotes from his coach.
According to Brian our rivals writer Small considers his commitment to GSU a "soft" commit and will be either confirming with GSU or changing to APP after his official visit this weekend...
Take it or leave it just what he said after talking to Small this week.

Yep, Our recruit is the son of Ben Tamburello, a 2 times All-American at Auburn who was drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft in 1987 by the Eagles. He was also inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Not a bad pedigree for our commit (and I am still holding my breath) eh?

App and GaSo are widening the gap between the two schools and the rest of the conference. App has also made some great coaching additions so far, each from successful FBS programs.
-Alvis Whitted added as receivers coach. Played at NCSU, NFL receiver for almost 10 years, asst. at UCLA.
-Justin Stepp added as RB coach. Asst. at Clemson.
-And everyone already knows about the return of the architect of the best FCS offense of all time, Scott Satterfield as OC.

We go through this same thing every offseason. The gap is not widening. You only think it is.
And this isn't to knock Justin Stepp (he's a nice guy and was a very good WR at Furman), but I'm not sure he qualifies as a "great coaching addition[]" from an FBS program. He was a grad assistant at Clemson, has never coached running backs, has never even played running back to the best of my knowledge. I don't necessarily see him as a hire that leaves behind the SoCon.
...I also think he's still wide open in the back of the Jacksonville State endzone.

I am taking a 'wait and see' approach with Stepp but I do think Satterfield qualifies as a great coaching addition. I also love the Alvis Whitted hire. In spite of having little coaching experience, I put a lot of value in having a guy with 9 years experience as an NFL wide receiver coaching that position. I believe he will be the kind of guy that the kids will really listen and respond well to. Outside of Satterfield, our biggest hire is yet to come, as we have not announced an OL coach. I will withhold judgement on our new offensive staff as a whole until that position is filled.

Well the little stars next to recruit's names, attendance, facilities, playoff showings and consistent conference standings beg to differ, but that's fine. Believe what you want.
About our hires, Stepp is the only one that's remotely questionable. I think he will fill more of an emotional role with the team, being so young and being a former SoCon player. We need this after losing Elliot a few years ago and now Hult.

That is no way to refer to the time I javelined, ran down, and tackled one of your dick head fans into submission. As for our "slipping" goes, I'm glad you revealed your ignorance in your post. Our future coach is already here. You might remember if you weren't too busy watching UT games and touching yourself. How do our conference games prove otherwise? This was the first time we haven't won the SoCon in 7 years and we came in second to a team we beat head-to-head. The gap is widening. Very bold talk coming from a UTC supporter. The only thing slipping is UTC slipping right into their 6th place spot.

I'm very unconcerned with the stars next to the players names. The App team that came to Greenville this season had a bunch of stars next to their names and left with one touchdown.
I'm simply saying that we go through this every year. We'll hear App State and GSU crow about their recruiting class. Not to say it isn't warranted. On paper, they usually look good. On the field, the gap is not nearly so large.

The gap may not be as large as some folks think but ASU and GSU are consistently at the top, which is due in large part to recruiting. There has been only one season since '96 that ASU or GSU has not won at least a share of the SoCon crown ('03 - Wofford won outright). I have no idea if the gap is widening or not but generally speaking, these strong recruiting classes have tended to pan out.

I think its not up for dispute that both App and GSU get top recruiting classes. That isn't suprising. They are big state schools and don't have the same recruiting restrictions their competitors do. It makes sense.
I just don't see a widening gap. I see App State and GSU being good teams, like they have been, but I don't get a large picture of them running away with the conference. If anything, I think the conference is a much better group on the whole. I don't think any of today's teams are as good as they have been in recent years, but the quality across the conference is far more evenly dispersed.

I agree with that statement although in fairness, there is more to it than just being a big public school. Otherwise, WCU and Chattanooga would be consistently at the top as well. While ASU/GSU are both bringing in strong recruiting hauls, Samford's looks very impressive thus far, Chattanooga has a lot of young returning talent and Furman is on the upswing as well. As usual, Wofford is consistent and will be in the mix. The SoCon as a whole is deeper than it has been in recent years.

I meant that sometimes the difference in recruiting classes doesn't proportionally relate to the field. Schools like Wofford don't land near the recruits App and GSU do, but they still manage to be competitve against much higher rated players.

The recruiting talk and all the "stars" beside a kid's name make for good conversation fodder, nothing more.
From a GSU perspective, I remember Hatcher's heralded class in 2008, led by 4 star transfer and GA HS POTY Antonio Henton. The talent in the class was- on paper and in HS- ungodly for an FCS program. Within 2 years only a handful of the recruits remained and the coach was unceremoniously dumped after only the second losing season in GSU's storied history.
Conversely, Monken's class of 2010 was not heralded nearly as much and came together on relatively short notice, but in that class were 8 freshman starters for a team that made the semi-finals that fall. I also don't remember a whole lot of hype surrounding GSU's signing class of 1997 (and that was when GSU was on Rivals) but that class was among the greatest in FCS history.
I could go on and on but hype desn't get you a whole lot, especially in January- and no the gap is surely not widening on the field. As close as the conference was on the field this year I don't see how anybody could make that assertion. I know GSU was darned lucky to defeat Chatty and Citadel, winning both games literally on the last play at home. That ain't a widening gap, that's darned competitive.

He'll do just fine for team chemistry. Chances are that he has been in trouble because he didn't live up to expectations. Nick Saban is notorious for that.

This certainly hasn't been the case over the past few years. I also love the way everyone is dismissing the fact that this is a guy who didn't perform up to expectations at Alabama. Was suspended for undiscosed reasons by Nick Saban. Could very well be a case of him doing something very minor and getting the wrath of Saban because of his lack of performance.

Defference is we now have a coach who can do something with them stars. Unlike before.

Again, I think most folks here are just talking from experience. There have been some transfers that have made a monumental impact at the FCS level. A lot of them don't. I can't think of a transfer running back in recent memory that has been a top flight SoCon player. Maybe some of the sharper minds around here can offer insight.

We had an RB transfer in either 2006 or 2007, Mike Hamilton from Ok State I think. He looked promising but after getting injured he didn't return to the form that got him recognized as Freshman of the Year in the Big 12.
I can't think of any transfer RB's in the conference in recent history actually.

Lamar Lewis from Fl State transferred to GSU in 2006 and rushed for over 900 yards in 2007 despite being banged up a good portion of the second half of the season.
Wasn't App's starting RB this year a transfer from Va Tech?
The highest profile RB transfer I can think of in FCS in recent memory is Brandon Jacobs, who transferred from Auburn to SIU and pretty much tore up the (at the time) Gateway.

Travaris Cadet was a transfer but not from VT. I want to say Toledo but I could be wrong. Cadet was a very athletic, versatile player who contributed at RB, KR/PR and in the slot but never exactly a top-notch RB. I never felt he had a natural position.
The guy you are thinking of is Devin Radford. He was a VT transfer that played for us for 2 years, had amazing speed and some big plays but was never an every down back. He was a change of pace guy for Devon Moore. I believe his last season was 2009.

Reported on Rivals today Small flipped to ASU this weekend. GSU came back at him and he told them he was sticking with the Apps. GSU gets a talented DB and ASU a much needed D-Lineman. Seems like a fair sweap to me considering ASU already has 4 DB's in the fold.

Yeah, I read the same thing. Apparently Small was a soft verbal for GSU, de-committed and gave App a verbal. Tim Hill on the other hand was another ASU/GSU recruit thought to be leaning towards App but instead gave a verbal to GSU.
I hope that Small does end up signing with us but I am not counting on it until there is ink to paper. It would make sense though, if he is as good as advertised then he would likely see the field at App from day one. If he signed with Southern, he'd be behind that Pig-Bear fellow.

I know OceanTiger pretty well. He gets his info from people posting on there and the recruiting services. The guy on GAVSV.com that posted that Andre Johnson was committed started a new thread a couple of days later saying he was misinformed. I'll repeat, he is NOT committed to Georgia Southern.

UND just got a recruit from Panthers's territory!
http://siouxfb.areavoices.com/
The UND Football program has received a commitment from DB Ryan Cain of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cain, 6′-0″-180lbs, played multiple positions for the Warriors and was very dangerous on kick returns, as evidenced in this highlight tape. The Warriors finished the season 8-4. Cain had 3 INT’s in his senior season but missed the first 4 games of the season with a broken collarbone injury. Head Coach Tony Lombardi’s Warriors finished the season 8-4 on the season and lost to Cedar Falls in the Class 4A quarterfinals.
It should be noted that per Rivals.com, Cain chose UND over offers from MVFC members South Dakota and Northern Iowa. Cedar Falls (UNI) is only 60 miles away from Cedar Rapids, so UND literally got one from the Panther’s back yard this time. This has proven to be a very difficult task to accomplish for UND in the past.
Cain is the 14th known verbal commitment to the 2012 recruiting class and the 1st prep commitment from the state of Iowa.

Nova just got a commit from a QB out of Cincinnati named Gary Underwood to play RB (go figure) in college. He primarily ran out of the backfield and is expected to be featured in a wildcat formation too. Now if only we could get some Defense backs....... running pretty low on those right now.
Here are the other 12 verbals we have so far:
Jake Prus (OL, Woodstown HS)
Nico D’Angelo (OL, Holy Spirit – 2 stars)
Austin Calitro (ILB, Danbury – 3 stars)
Javon White (RB, Souderton HS)
Aaron Wells (RB, River Hill HS)
Tanoh Kpassagnon (DE, Wissahickon HS)
Michael Burke IV (WR, Columbia HS– 1 star)
Corey Majors (LB, Worcester – 3 stars)
Jonathan Green (OL, North Schuylkill)
Bradley Seaton (OT, Brunswick, CT)
Cameron McCurry (LB, Fleming Island, FL)

Villanova got a verbal today from QB C.J. Logan from Watertown, MA. He spent last year at Northfield Mount Hermon Prep in Gill, MA to focus on academics for a year. He originally committed to Bently University, but evidently our School of Business changed his mind. In 2010 he threw for 15 touchdowns and ran for another 11 and some in the coaching staff are comparing his style of play to that of Chris Whitney. There is a chance though that he will be asked to change his position.
......and still waiting for some defensive backs......

http://siouxfb.areavoices.com/
Luke Mathewson, a 6-5, 235 pound TE/DE from Libertyville, IL, has given a verbal commitment to the North Dakota Football program. Randy Kuceyeski’s Wildcats finished 5-5 and lost in the 1st round of the Class 7A Illinois Playoffs to eventual state champion Boylan.

Brandon Larson, 6'2 200, Bemidji - All-State Second Team. In 11 games, has 148 tackles. In 11 games as a junior, had 152 tackles (62 solo),1 .5 sack, 9 TFL, 5 INT, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. Has a 3.8 GPA.

Not sure how other programs handle this position, but snapping has been a sore spot for Furman for years, and has directly been the deciding factor in several losses. Great to see Furman not only have one single player designated for the duties, but also let everyone know that special teams will be taken seriously and not resemble some hodgepodge unit it has in year's past.

A couple of special teams plays in Boone come to mind...xlolx
Solid pick up though for a team that struggled in that area. I'd be upset if we used a scholarship on a long snapper, but it does indeed show your coaching staff's commitment to improve what needs to be improved.

The idea originally annoyed me, but it further shows Bruce Fowlers commitment to getting Furman back to the program it was -- strong on defense and special teams and ball control on offense. When you consider Furman was a small handful of plays away from being in the playoffs the past two years, spending a scholarship on a guy that can tighten up those "doing the little things" areas can make a big difference.

Big day for ASU recruiting as LB John Law (2-star Rivals/ESPN) de-committed from Cincinnati and committed to ASU after finding that they wanted to redshirt him. GSU may have a half dozen on more three star signees this year. Lots of speed in this class and there are a couple of sleepers who weren't evaluated by any of the recruiting services who can absolutely fly.

I fall into the 'star' trap as much as anybody but I'm trying to stop myself. I remember in 2010 ASU picked up 4 guys that were Rivals 3-star recruits and only 1 has seen the field in any significant amount. Then in 2011, our 2 best DE's turned out to be true freshmen not evaluated by any recruiting service.
The 'stars' are fun to talk about though and I do love seeing them on our list!

I can assure you that I don't give a rip about the stars these kids get from recruiting services. I take a closer look than that, but on paper you have to admit that at the FCS level it's pretty impressive.

Absolutely, I did not mean that to say otherwise. GSU has put together a great looking class, as has ASU. As always, we have to wait and see who pans out but with what both schools are doing on the recruiting trail along with what I've seen from the other SoCon schools, the conference should be strong for the foreseeable future.

So, Dayton loses one to Dartmouth.... I thought this was interesting due to the following:
"Konstant owns a 3.4 grade-point average and hopes to major in pre-med with a possible minor in economics."
A decent GPA, but not one that I would normally associate with an Ivy League school. His GPA is a bit lower than the average Dayton's student's 3.6 GPA. The article does mention that he has not been accepted yet, so maybe he will end up at Dayton yet....

Yea, but doesn't Coxson have to sit out this year? Same deal as former Rutgers/Arizona QB Tom Savage who already lost his NCAA appeal. The second time you transfer you have to sit =- and if I'm correct Coxson was at Florida then transferred to Maryland....

By my count, App has 5 *** guys and 6 ** guys who have given verbals. I understand that stars are not the end all/be all, but it's really the only thing I looked at in the past (i've followed recruiting a lot more closely this year).
Question to the App guys who have followed recruiting more closely the last few years; is this higher than normal? Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but I seem to remember the last few classes having only one or two *** guys and a couple of ** guys. (Let me reiterate that I am NOT judging this class or any other solely by the stars beside a guys name, this is just all I have to compare past classes to).

Depending on the recruiting service, that count is about right. Including the transfer (Morgan), we've got five 3-star, two 2-star by ESPN count and two 3-star, five 2-star by Rivals count. That is much higher than last year when we had one 3-star and two 2-star recruits and about the same as 2010 when we pulled four 3-star and four 2-star.
I do follow our recruiting pretty closely and in my opinion, this class is the best we've had since '09 when we brought in Jeremy Kimbrough, Jamal Jackson, Troy Sanders, Justin Wray, Demetrius McCray, Brandon Grier and Travaris Cadet. With Tysean Holloway and Quartterrio Morgan coming on board, it is the best RB class we have had in a LONG time. We have picked up some players with great potential on OL, DL, LB and athletes that can be moved around. This class is very well-rounded which I am impressed by. Never know how these guys will pan out but it has the potential to be one of the better classes in recent years. Considering all the coaching turnover we had this year, Scot Sloan has certainly earned his paycheck!

In my opinion (that of a rival outsider to be sure), App has landed some very good recruits, but a lot of them tend to be 5'11ish 190ish "athletes." Great for the spread system, but the numbers can be misleading. There needs to be balance, and App signed a lot of highly regarded prospects, but very few highly regarded prospects to block for them.
That "oversight" (lack of emphasis, perhaps) really began to show in 2011. App was stellar, with great skill guys handling the ball. However, those skill guys really struggled against teams with phyical defensive fronts where App's lack of recruiting along the offensive line really began to show.

There always seems to be a 2-3 year lag for the line prospects since they can so rarely contribute as freshmen, but hopefully we are done dealing with the oversight in recruiting OL in '08-'09 when we signed a TOTAL of 2 offensive linemen in 2 years. As you stated, it really hurt us this past year. How that position failed to be addressed for two years really is inexplicable.
We have signed 3 OL this year, 3 in 2011 and 5 in 2010 so we've got some good players coming up and we should be in better shape this year than last. With our freshmen who redshirted last year along with 2 starters returning to action (one from injury and one from suspension), I'm optimistic about an improved unit in 2012. A new position coach should make a world of difference too, McClain was a terrible fit at App.

General question here: in looking at all of the FCS classes this year, it seems that we are seeing a lot more players with stars by their names signing with FCS programs and not just the traditional powers. Do y'all think that is because more highly regarded players are seeing the value in getting early playing time as opposed to riding the bench at an FBS program or because these recruiting services are evaluating more players? I tend to think it is a combination of both but maybe a bit more on the side of players looking to get on the field early and taking notice of other recruits who have gone the FCS route and made their way to the NFL.
Either way, it is great for the FCS.

I think its the recent attitude change by the NFL towards the FCS. 15 years ago, it was rare for an FCS player to be drafted, I remember the bears had an offical policy that they would only draft FBS players. Now, you see FCS players at the Senior Bowl, and at the combines in Indy. Players, who want a shot at the NFL, realize its far better to play at the FCS, and get noticed, than to sit on the bench at Alabama

Just my .02 worth, but ASU lost its way for a few of years and focused more on recruiting "athletes" than fotball players. It appears someone in the administration (Charlie Cobb was a former O-lineman at NC State) saw the need for some enlightenment among the staff. Changes were made and the focus restablished. Although you can never count anything until the hay is in the barn, the short handed staff appears to have done an outstanding job this year. Kinda makes me excited about next year when we have a complete staff on the road. I don't pay much attention to the stars attached to a kid's name. i'm more interested in who else wanted to sign him. If everything holds firm ASU is bringing in one of, if not the most, heavily recruited class in the history of the school. At least nine high school kids had offers from FBS schools and two FBS transfers (each with 4 years eligibility remaining) and several more who just missed an FBS offer when those schools received a commitment from someone else. Info is scarce on a couple of our kids, so that number could actually be greater. Many of these players are in the trend of bigger players we started bringing in a few years back. Granted all this looks great on paper but the proof is the results on the field. I am excited to see this group on campus next fall.

I think your spot on but stopped just a bit short. Take Armanti as an example. A lot of these kids will also be given the opportunity they want to pursue at the position they want to at the FCS schools. These guys that like their offense don't have to worry about moving to a safety or CB spot if they don't want to because the coaches will tell them they have a shot at their desired spot. I think that is pretty big to a lot of guys as well.

I think you are seeing (yet again) another shift in the SoCon. A few years ago it seemed every team was making adjustments in scheme and recruiting to get more speed on the field with App State going on a big run, and the emergence of teams like Elon (with their spread passing attack).
I think you are seeing the shift back to the big boys. Furman has gone back to the old power game. The Citadel, GSU, and Wofford are all now heavy run teams. It warrants the need for bigger players.
Case in point. In 2004 and 2005 Furman's linebacker corps went 6'3 235, 6'1 230, 6'2 230. Two years after that we were running something called the 4-2-5 with a bunch of safeties because every team in the conference was in the spread, but Wofford (option) and Samford (multiple). Now the conference has reversed course, and the spread is the exception, not the rule. Thus, teams are having to bulk up again on the running game with the re-emergence of the "feature back."
