Likely Lehigh in 2001.
This is an impressive honor when your consider the competition. To be considered the best team in the Northeast is no small achievement.
This along with a #5 final ranking in the major FCS poll, or at least the one that goes in the record books, a Payton runner-up, puts the stamp on a great year.
Lehigh's final TSN ranking in PL playoff era
1998 - #13 absurd in hindsight, would be top 5
1999 - #14
2000 - #8
2001 - #5
2003 - #23
2004 - #15
2010 - #14
2011 - #5

The trophy recognizes supremacy in northeastern college and the best team in the Northeast.
To be eligible for the Lambert Cup, a school must be located in the Northeast or play half its schedule against eligible Lambert teams. The territory includes New York, New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania, while teams in the bordering states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and the District of Columbia qualify if half their schedule features eligible teams.

There are Lambert Cups for each level of football. Its football only. The FBS version is called the Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy.
This year's winners:
FBS - West Virigina

Lehigh has also been named the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Team of the Year, which started in 1974, in 1977,1979, 1980, 2001 and 2011.

In theory, yes, but in reality it's largely been the CAA, Lehigh, or Holy Cross. The last Ivy winner was in 1970, and since the I-AA split, the current CAA schools have won it 23 times, Holy Cross 4, Lehigh 2, and the former program at Boston University once.

Little known, remembered, or "who cares" fact! Lehigh won the Lambert in 1975, then was summarily beaten by huge underdog UNH 35-21 in the first round (of 8 teams nationally) of the NCAA Div 2 (No FCS back then) Playoffs...
Old Wildcat fans, who can ever forget the totally "out of character" Bill Bowes call for a fake punt that turned the tide in that game? That game changing long toss by P Scott Seero to TE Mike Maroney will live on in history for those of us old enough to remember, .... or care! xnodx :D xthumbsupx

I think JMUs days of competing for the Lambert Cup are about done. With BU, Northeastern and Hofstra having dropped football and UMass and Rhody leaving the conference, we would no longer be able to meet the 50% criteria.
The only possible way would be a perfect storm season where we played UNH, Maine, Villanova and a couple of NE out of conference teams. Or maybe we're grandfathered in somehow.

Seriously, a nova fan complaining about historical Lambert Cup voting? Did you just skip over 1992, a year where UD beat nova head to head on the road at nova, a year where UD won the conference title with one conference loss (nova finished second with two conference losses), and a year where UD went to the national semis and were a starting QB with the flu away from maybe winning it all that year (while nova went out in the first round), and yet somehow, due to Talley's campaigning for it, nova got the Lambert Cup that year? It was the travesty of 1992 that led to the Lambert Cup essentially being given to the I-AA/FCS team that lasted longer in the playoffs. It was harder this year since both Lehigh and Maine went out in the same round, but it wasn't hard in 1997. nova lost in the quarterfinals while UD lasted a round longer. Frankly, I like the more objective measure

I don't really remember much at all about the year 1992, let alone the football season. You're dealing with a young Nova fan here.
I was just wondering about 1997 seeing that we went undefeated through the regular season finishing #1 and winning the head to head with Delaware. Frankly I hadn't even heard of the Lambert Cup until we won it in 2009. Is that how it is typically decided by who does better in the playoffs? If thats the case I completely understand '97 and understand your hard feelings about '92

They changed it sometime after 1992 due to the obvious error in the voting - a conference champ, winner of the head to head, and won two more playoff games than the actual winner from the same conference just looked odd. And Tubby did joke about it as the playoffs went on that the Lambert Cup team was sitting at home while the team that won their conference and beat them was still playing.
So yes, it was before 1997 that they changed it to be voted on after the playoffs and to basically give it to the team that went the furthest. The only real voting now comes into play when there's more than one team that makes it equally far into the playoffs, as in this year.

Nah, UD's and Holy Cross's two common opponents, UMass and BU, were 2 and 4 point losers respectively to HC and were 17 and 14 point losers to UD. Plus UD beat Navy that year and went into the playoffs as a top 4 seed - Holy Cross clearly did not go into the playoffs. Patriot League screwed themselves back then.

Blame's in the wrong place. Blame the Patriot League at the time. It's the same reason why the Lehigh/UD rivalry ended. You guys stop offering schollies, pull back from playing tough OOC schedules and saying you are doing so because you are changing your football model, and self-impose a playoff ban. It wasn't until the Patriot League realized they shot themselves in the foot and decided to re-enter the I-AA world again a few years later that those mistakes were corrected (well, except for the scholly thing, that's obviously still out there). You can't declare yourself lesser than the rest of I-AA in terms of competitiveness and then complain about not getting enough kudos. Thankfully the Patriot isn't like that anymore.

I was at the 1975 game. Joe Sterrett, Lehigh AD was the quarterback. I think the real turning point was when he was sacked within his own 5 yard line. But the fake punt also was significant. I think that was the only time #2 in the Lambert vote beat the recipient. That Lehigh team averaged about 425 yards per game. I don't think UNH was a heavy underdog for that game however.

And I am well aware that the team that went furthest in the playoffs would get the trophy. I don't agree with it, but I'm just thankfull that Lehigh was able to do that this year because they deserved the Trophy hands down this season.

Well, it was only a 10 point loss in the second game of the year. "very handily" kinda exagerrates that a bit. But yes, it was nice having the rule that was put in place after the travesty of 1992 come back to help us in 1997, against the same team that was the beneficiary of the chicanery in '92.

Lehigh was part of the Middle Three or whatever in the 1960's playing Rutgers, Delaware, and what is the current core of the PL. UD got smart and went to the schollies and we remained in lala land with what is now our PL bretheran. Maybe, just maybe, we find our way out of the rabbit hole by the end of this year.

Yeah, they did. Then about in the mid 80's they decided to just go the scholarship route. About the same time UD did away with the rule that freshmen couldn't play their first year - they actually had a freshman team and if you were a freshman then you played on that team, no matter what. Rich Gannon actually played his first year on that team and only played 3 years on the "varsity" squad. Seems amazing that it took until the mid 80's, which wasn't that long ago, for those things to change.
