This is the third Missouri Valley Football Conference versus Southland Conference championship game. The MVFC has won the prior two meetings with Youngstown State defeating McNeese State 10-9 in 1997 and former MVFC member Western Kentucky defeating McNeese State 34-14 in 2002.
