As an indoor football venue, the Alerus Center cannot host games on real grass, but for $4 million, it can have something almost as good.

After 11 years of wear and tear, the Alerus Center’s management is replacing its playing surface with new turf, estimated to cost between $3.5 million to $4 million.

The new surface will be infill turf, a material that comes closer to replicating the feel of natural turf and is easier on the bodies of athletes playing an impact sport.

“That’s the new standard for football,” said Alerus Center Operations Manager Jeremy Linstad.



UND installed similar turf at Memorial Stadium, where the football team practices, and the Fargodome is replacing its turf, installed about as the Alerus Center’s, with the same system as the Grand Forks facility plans to install.

UND plays five or six regular season football games each season in the city-owned facility. Linstad estimated that with practices, high school games and other events, the surface is used between 25 and 30 times a year.


No word on what the endzones will look like except that it won't have the word Sioux on it.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that UND announced they were going to get new turf before NDSU did - it was supposed to be in before this year. However, it got delayed a year. Impossible! I believe NDSU is getting new turf due to a long standing contract agreement with the fargodome, when you heard about it is irrelevant.

Both the Fargodome and the Alerus are replacing the machines that roll the turf up and expanding the storage pits for the turf roll. Both are replacing the same (terrible) Magic Carpet surface with a modern infill surface.

Email threats are the same thing as online especially if you try and make up a fake email to deliver your message. That is absolutely no different than this. Once the real world meets him he's a lot more compliant than he is online is what I believe the message was here.

He's passionate, crazy as a **** house rat, and all that other stuff but I've had email and pm exchanges with him and whether people want to believe it or not he can be/has been a real decent guy...even in those type of communications.

Magic Carpet is a the conversion system, not the field surface.

I highly doubt the cost of the turf is that much greater for the Alerus Center, so obviously the cost must be due to the structural requirements for the conversion system. The current turf and roller system at the Fargodome weighs 70 tons and the pit is 13 feet by 12 feet by 202 feet, so it's not like this is a minor project. Maybe they have additional costs due to moving existing infrastructure to enlarge the pits. Maybe the existing pits must be completely rebuilt whereas the Fargodome pits only have to be enlarged in one direction. Obviously there is some reason why.

The turf is going to cost a bit extra than NDSU's because UND thought it wise to install radiant floor heating under the turf. I guess it's for those athletes who for some reason like to go barefoot in the middle of winter.

I guess since its their stadium (actually the city of Grand Forks owns it not UND) they can put the logos in large print....in case you didn't see the giant logos on the outside of the building and sign. But missing is a 50 yard line logo...some think they are waiting for the nickname thing to be over to add one. I don't see it happening.

Someone on SS emailed Brian Faison about the turf and its up to the Alerus Center not UND to put a logo or not put at logo on the 50 yard line, and I think it is the same surface as the one being installed at the Fargodome.

I prefer the old "APPALACHIAN" and "MOUNTAINEERS" in the end zones to the small "Appalachian State." I don't know whether or not I'm the only one who feels that way. I do like the block A being in the center of the field.

Do you know what kind of turf it will be? Does the Dakotadome have the Magic Carpet I system now?

I can only hope it will be the grass style turf and either a permanent install or the same system that the Fargodome/Alerus are installing or the system that UNI has.


This means that of the 5 I-AA programs in the north central US, only SDSU continues to buck the trend of not having a dome and not having grass style turf. Hopefully they'll at least get turf. I don't see a dome in their future any time...ever.

The new turf also will make the skill players happy.
The previous surface usually left players with carpet burns after they were tackled on it.
UND wide receivers coach Luke Schleusner, who played at the Alerus in 2001, estimated that he got a turf burn every other week from the old surface.

The new surface GameDay Grass 3D. It features five layers to provide extra support.
The base is tufted construction. The second layer is multi-ply backing. The third layer is infill. The fourth layer is double nylon Root Zone, which reduces the compaction associated with other infill products. And the final layer is monofilament polyethylene, which mimics grass blades.
