At least per this write-up...

“I would rather go 0-11 (at the time) as a member of 1-A than be a member of 1-AA and win the national championship.”

One of the worst columns I've ever read. This guy is a genuine tool.

They’ve gotten to practice where a Super Bowl Champion plays. And, Saturday night, they’ll play on that same field with their team logo in the end zone. Who plays at that stadium in Frisco? They’ve gotten a great gift, a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, which is the android version of the iPad. Today, five players who have completed their degree requirements will walk across a makeshift stage at the team hotel in cap and gown and receive their degrees before family, friends and fans.

You don’t get any of that by being in a playoff.

So U of L is FBS so that can get Samsung Galaxy Tablets. And so their players can graduate in front of family, friends, and fans, because we all know that no one of the FCS playoff teams won't graduate any of their players.

He keeps talking about this "bowl experience" that will live with you forever, but never really elaborates on what that is? Whatever it is though sounds like alot of brainwashing and drinking the koolaid.

Almost makes me sick to read such douche-bauchery

Mr. C you certainly captured my feelings on this article exactly...

I suppose this is what mediocre teams from that level tell themselves when they think going 6-6 on the year and getting to play in the Who-gives-a-crap Bowl is a success?

Yeah, it kind of makes you feel even worse for them.

Ask the perennial bowl-goers (e.g. LSU). They have gotten used to this pretty well and sometimes (especially when the bowl is non-BCS) forgettable.

Yes. I agree with this. They are only after money and perks I believe.

What do they tell themselves when they go 6-6 and don't make the who gives a crap bowl?

I can see both sides as we've spent a lot of time planning for the move (we're going). Each school has different market circumstances. I don't see where Montana or NDSU would gain much by making such a move. Georgia Southern and App St., however have had great success in I-AA and have peaked in terms of market share and attendance. Old Dominion, Ga State, and UNC-Charlotte are in large enough markets for FBS to be a serious consideration before they even get going good in I-AA. The fact is about 20 schools in FCS have fan bases large enough and devoted enough to make the season and playoffs entertaining and enjoyable as far as football is concerned. For the regional Directional U's who are fighting in-state schools for appropriation dollars and donors, FCS has its limits.

Are we dealing with an ignorant public when we discuss Division I Football? Certainly. That ignorance is perpetuated by media, FBS schools, and the NCAA. Georgia Southern could win another 6 NC's and still be "the little engine that could" in our home state and virtually unknown in the rest of the country.

Every sorry Bowl Game will get higher TV ratings and more media attention than the NC game in Frisco. As we were waiting for the NDSU/GSU game to come on, ESPNU was running a rerun of the Bowl Preview show. The only reason ESPN broadcasts our games is because the NCAA puts ALL Championships in the contract that includes the basketball tournament.

I'd rather play for NC's and look forward to playoffs, but my school will be better off in FBS.

I'm still campaigning to get a new bowl game...The Kohler's Toilet Bowl...the 2 WORST teams in the FBS. Then maybe those douche nuggets will realize how bad they really do suck.

Who's with me?

Would I rather be 0-11 (he should have meant 0-12) at the FBS level than win an FCS national title?? ****** NO. This guy is insane for saying it.

Would I rather be 7-5 at the FBS level than win an FCS national title?? Probably.

7-5 in the Big 10 sure but 7-5 in the Suck Belt...hell no.

I am one that wants to move to the FBS, but that is the dumbest statement I've ever heard. It tells you exactly how that program is perceived. They have no aspirations of greatness.

This coming from a writer who writes about a team who is so desperate to not be under LSU's shadow that they tell ESPN to call their athletic teams "Louisiana" as opposed to their real name of Louisiana-Lafayette. Did I miss something, or is this writer misinformed by saying UL-L wasn't part of 1-AA. Were they not part of the Southland?

Let's get real..ULL (and it's sister ULM) will always be FBS bottom feeders...and they will always have the pleasure of having McNeese kick the **** out of them at Cajun Field

Southwestern Louisiana (how I hate name changes at universities) never dropped down to I-AA when the split was made in the early 1980s. The Ragin Cajuns left the Southland in 1982, largely because of the split. They were mostly known for their men's basketball program (went to the regional finals one year with Bo Lamar as the lynchpin and got put on probation for cheating in the 1970s), though they have had a handful of NFL players over the years. The school competed as an independent for many of those years after leaving the Southland.

As a fan, I was disappointed when my team lost in the quarterfinals last year. However, I didn't consider that a bad year by any means. If SHSU comes out on top in Frisco, I'll be mad for a week or two and still think it was a great year.

I've never been to a bowl game although I know some players see it as an opportunity to get a mini-vacation and freebies along with playing a football game.

I think I agree with this viewpoint. No way a player on a winless FBS team could have better sports-related self-esteem than the FCS champion. OTOH, winning most of your games at the next level might get you there.xtwocentsx

Besides if the players were in a real bowl that mattered, they would have received iPad2.

It's like chess...(Maybe)
I'm competitive at my level - when I play other guys ranked in the 1800's - and I look like a grand master when I play against a 1500...
However when I play a guy even in the next level up I get stomped pretty hard

Being competitive at the highest level would be very satisfying for a top athlete

But in chess you can't move up until you've earned your way up
However in FBS you can, so you have a system that rewards mediocrity and one that calls what is essentially failure a success

Yup...
you have to register and play registered games against other players to accumulate points
I belong to a chess club in Redmond - nerd factor HIGH
It's really a lot of fun, I don't get to play as much as I'd like so I'm really not getting any better but it's fun to watch the real experts play
