The Phils' 8-run seventh inning against that crappy Braves middle relief earned them a 9-3 win this afternoon. The big hit was Utley's 3-run double. Burrell had a dinger and an RBI single. (OK, so even a blind pig finds an acorn once in awhile... ) Wolfie looked better, too.

Omigawd! The Phillies start a long homestand on Friday!

STAY ON THE ROAD!!!

Yes, six out of nine against the Cards, Mets and Braves isn't bad--but all the more gnawing as to how they threw away the two losses in NY. I'll be on the road Friday-Sunday, so maybe my 'roadtrip' will cancel out their penchant for losing at home...

A good win...how about Utley scoring from second on an infield chop...great hustle...just need a whole bunch more games like this one...

Yes that was a nice call--they had Utley running on the pitch. Luckily, Howard made contact. Utley was almost on third by the time the ball was hit. Now, will the big apple rise in their throats as they take the field at Citizens Bank?

The run from 2nd from Utley was a thing of beauty, aptly named the "dirtiest" (for hustle, not cheating) player in MLB by SI this week.

My issue of SI came today. Will be enjoying it over the weekend during my southern sojourn. Glad to see "Mr. Dirt" getting some ink...

Utley is a thing of beauty. His hustle will enshrine him as a fan favorite along the lines of Tony Taylor for the next 50 years. Philly fans reward hustlers and Utley is at the top of that list.

Agreed - it's a rare breed that has the motor to do what he did. Utley and Howard are definitely two guys who you can feel good about building a team around.

Big series with the Reds starting tonight. The Phils need to take at least 2 out of three or else I think you can stick a fork in them.

And then 4 games against the NY Mutts! The Phils better win 3 of those, too.

For the Phillies, playing the role of "the goat," I give you.... TOM GORDON!!!!

1 blown save and a loss in two nights. Damn, I knew the wheels were going to fall off soon!

Mitch Williams' arm started to die at the end of the season in '93. I don't know if that is what happenning to Gordon. He hasn't pitched as much as Williams did but the end of the season sees many arms lose velocity and a drop of 3-5 MPH will kill any pitcher.

The Phillies hired three former managers, Davey Lopes, Jimy Williams and Art Howe, as coaches this week. How long will it be before this shadow cabinet assumes most of Charlie Manuel's authority?

Hopefully they do as soon as possible. I'm all for keeping Charlie as a figurehead if that keeps the players happy and productive, but I also want the other guys to be pretty involved and effective in terms of setting lineups, making changes during the games, etc. No more of Ryan Howard being banished to the 6th spot for half the year.

Charlie was officially gelded as of that date! This tells me that Charlie is history after 2007 and that we will have a beauty pageant for his successor (although I'm not wild about any of those guys). I just hope it doesn't turn out as badly as the 1965(?) Cubs' decision to have "managers by committee."

You know, I'd like to keep Charlie around... as the hitting coach! Seriously, he's a good baseball coach, but a lousy manager. I don't think there's any shame in that.

I predict Art Howe as manager by May 15! Davey Lopes will probably never manage in the majors again, and Jimmy Williams has reached the Don Zimmer stage of his career. Yeah, he could manage, and teams are willing to hire him, but it's not what he wants anymore.

I shrugged my shoulder when I heard this. My main concern--getting a decent bat to protect Howard. Not to say the pitching doesn't need help, but I see effectively replacing Burrell in the 5-hole is primary.
