NDSU Has the #16 rush defense... Soooo... Your Offense ran for 221 against the number 13 rush defense... Annndd we're a team that specializes in the run... Annnndd you have a crappier rush defense than the one you ran for 221 on. Oh I totally see your logic that the NDSU defense is going to shutdown the GSU offense.

GSU's has the #43 rush defense, so I guess we'll be running wild then.....

Little dyslexia there? Number 34 rush defense. But then we never said our D was going to stop your runners cold. That was the NDSU position. You'll recall we're all about unstopable offense and how we beat Alabama.

If you outrush us and beat us, I'll be the first one to tip my hat.

We're averaging giving up ~30 yards more than y'all per game on D. But we're averaging ~100 yards more than you on offense. Should be interesting!

I of course meant the plural form of you. I'll take your attempt to distance yourself from the traditional NDSU stance as an acquiesce. Have a nice day.

xlolx Yup, we're all saying NDSU is going to stop GSU's running game cold in it's tracks... no yards whatsoever. Do NDSU fans also spit on the Santa Claus and hate puppies?

I just noticed your 5 INT's for TD's 2 PR's for TD's and a KR and FR for TD's. Opposed to our 1 FR & PR TD and 2 KR's for TD's. The pick sixes don't really concern me, but it's interesting that we have similar special teams stats. In a close game (that may very well come down to special teams) it's hard to really see an advantage either way.

Ah, the classic selective reading and generalizing a fan base off of several outlandish stances of your choosing. In case you haven't noticed, we have our fair share of retards in our fan base. If you want to say "Lakes' position is that NDSU's D is going to stop GSU's run game cold" have at it. I'll tell you that he's wrong. Ummm....

Safety first contacts a blocker 3-4 yards past the LOS. The CB finally turns around and gets hit about 7 yards downfield.

By all means... Please blow up our blockers 3-4 yards downfield and give us 4-5 on each play. I'd love to see how that works out for you.

It was the result of a individual player making a great play not an example of an undefendable offensive scheme as the poster clearly implied.

Perhaps you might recognize my handle from Tsc where unfortunately it only says I've been a member since 2007 because that's when E22 made us all get new handles. But sure if you want to call someone who has only been an ardent supporter since the year before NDSU won its last "NC" go right ahead. I don't often feel the need to compete in metaphorical competitions of who has the bigger genitilla through keyboard jockeying so I haven't bothered to keep up with accounts.

Consider me a more common variety reader rather than participant. Oh rest assured I'll soon tire of battling the slow witted and deranged, present company excepted of course, and return once again to my slumber. So you needn't suffer my ramblings much longer.

Of course none of this will have an impact on the outcome of the game. GSU will win and NDSU will have a lovely off season looking forward to their new carpet.

Have a nice day.

It's not really an expansion - more of a statement on the progress of history. Ohio used to be 'the west' back in the day. It was even part of the name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Territory).

What are talking about? The safety gets pancaked. That what springs the play. Taking on a blocker and getting knocked on your *** is "missing your assignment."

What I'm talking about is that the option runs away from the strong side and there is a blocker for every potential tackler. The ball carrier is an "extra" man who is free to run. It 6 against 5. Whoever makes a play has to do two things, shed a block and then make the tackle. 95% of the time if the defender sheds a block and then makes the tackle, it's still 3-5 yds past the LOS.

I will have to say my fellow Bison and Eagles fans. We should be very proud of ourselves. While this thread has gotten a little chippy and non sequitur on occasion we have produced (so far) 155 pages of good conversation. Over at the UM/SHSU thread, it has been about 20 pages of alphagriz1 arguing about racism.

^This. Pick up some crossword puzzles or something for the last hour of the drive. After you pass Fergus Falls (my hometown), the drive gets prettttty boring. Unfortunately, Fargo is located in the only flat part of ND, and yet it doesn't reap any benefits from the old Lake Agassiz. The only bodies of water close to Fargo is the Sheyanne and Red River.

Also, the roads were coated with ice from the freezing rain we had yesterday. This should be taken care of by tomorrow, but to be on the safe side you should just drive carefully. Most people around here can drive on ice, but if you are not used to it the roads can be fairly tricky, even after they salt them.

The Maine coach said after the game, they started to figure it out but they ran out of time. If it takes NDSU as long to figure it out they could end up in the same boat as Maine. I do think they are bigger and more athletic than Maine which will help even if it takes them awhile to figure it out. Plus I think they will hit the QB alot and hard. And it will hurt when he hits the ceeeeeement (my prediction is he won't finish the game). NDSU's offense needs to sustain drives and limit the number of possesions GS has to win this game IMO. I believe they have the talent and will win by a FG. Can't wait for Sat.

Yeah, they ran out of time... and they gave the ball back, what, 3 times (INT's)??? That killed them. And they weren't far behind.

Time of possession was something like GSU 43:00, Maine 17:00. That's 3 quarters to 1! And for Maine only to be down 12pts against a team like Ga Southern is unbelievable. I don't think GSU has had a more lopsided game (TOP) this year.

Well then it would stand to reason that there is no excuse to ever not score a touchdown on every offensive drive.

But wait, hasn't no other football team in history had the speed, athleticism, execution, and perfection in the TO than this team?

PS, there have been other Veer and Wishbone offenses, but from a Triple Option perspective and the Flexbone, I believe it goes back to Erk Russell (Paul Johnson was the O Coodinator then), and subsequently Paul Johnson, and his disciples, including Jeff Monken, who was with PJ at Navy and Ga Tech, before coming to Ga Southern. If I'm not mistaken.

So why doesn't GSU average 7 points every offensive drive?
Been pretty close lately. We only punted once in the playoffs, and that was at the end of the game against Maine after everything had already been settled. The only time we didn't score on our possessions is it we turn the ball over, taking a knee right before the half, or lining up in the victory formation at the end of the game. However, there is one time we did turn it over on downs.

Going from memory, I believe we have punted 3 times in the last 3 games. That's pretty good considering the competition we've faced. xthumbsupx

I predict NDSU is going to force Ga Southern to put the ball on the carpet more than a couple of times. That could be the difference in the game. Worst case scenario for Ga Southern has been the long protracted drives to get into the red-zone, only to fumble the ball away on the 5.

Well, at least we have a little bit of snow (enough to line the curbs) to greet our guests from down South. Usually we have a few feet of snow by now with 0-10 degree temperatures. Last year, the team had to practice during a blizzard outside to prepare for the MSU game... I want to get the snowmobile out and I want a very, very hard freeze so I don't have to worry about ice on the lakes. A man just fell through on Crystal (supposedly he's okay though), and it's already mid-December! I can't believe we have to worry about ice thickness this late into the season!

This is what I've been waiting on someone to post. It only took 150+ pages!

I honestly believe we're a better team than last year's team. We had 5 turnovers and that game was never out of our grasp until midway through the 4th.

Holy smokes!

There is a coaching philosophy at work there however. They do have fewer total non scoring eligible fourth downs (4th down opps - Field goal attempts) at 43 but they choose to go for it on 4th at a greater rate 33% of the time (29 punts 14 4th Down attempts).

The Bison choose to go for it at a far fewer rate 20% (52 punts 8 4th Down conversion attempts)

So while they do have fewer 4th down attempts, they would naturally punt less as a matter of practice.

Can I 'but Alabama' this, or are we past that now? Seriously though, our southern boys had a hard time holding on to the ball in that game. 5 turnovers, and I remember at least a few were unforced.....bad exchanges. I don't know how much you can read into that. We have 5 turnovers against NDSU it'll be the same result.

So why doesn't GSU average 7 points every offensive drive?

It's not magic. People miss blocks entirely, or they miss their assignment and block the wrong player. Or the QB makes the wrong read on the defensive end and the DE doesn't take the dive and eats the QB before the play even starts. Or the QB makes the wrong read and gives it to the FB and the DE eats the FB. Bad pitches happen every game.

Plenty of things can go wrong.

I will say this though. GSU avgs 37 points a game, which is good but most people don't think about the fact that they do it on about 25% fewer possesions than the avg team. Their "redzone" starts from where ever they touch the football and they score on over 50% of their possesions. You have to remember, they also limit their opponents to about 25% fewer possesions also.

True "ball control" offense.

That's right. NDSU gets GSU to turn it over 5 times and they will crush GSU too. UMASS got 7 in the 98 championship and beat probably the most offensively dominate GSU football team to ever touch the field (55-43).

Even worse? I got the numbers wrong. 8 out of 60 is 13%

that makes it even more stark, if GSU only went for it on 13% of eligible 4th Down opportunities, they would have punted at least 37 times, almost 23% more.

I never played, and I'm not a huge X O guy, but I don't think centering the ball on the field would make it harder to run an option offense. If anything, it opens up the field on both sides of the formation, gives more room for pitching lanes, and makes it hard to defend.

For those of you know more about the Xs and Os of football than I do, did moving the hash marks closer together make it harder to run the triple option or veer offense?

All I know is the GSU offense has been sent down from the heavens, and the NDSU defense has been annointed by the Lord himself. So I expect to see one big flash of light on Saturday and the infinity symbol will be left engraved in the turf of the Fargo Dome.

My only knowledge of Lutefisk is from the episode of King of the Hill where the female preacher from Minnesota comes down and offers a dish full for a potluck. Bobby eats the whole thing and gets an upset stomach, goes to the bathroom and creates something so foul that Cotton almost sets the building on fire.

No Thanks.

The Bison employed the veer option to win five Division II national championships after a playoff system was instituted in 1973. At one point, NDSU owned a 12-game winning streak against North Dakota.

Lennon, first as UND’s defensive coordinator and then as head coach, set his sights on cracking the option and won nine of his last 11 games against NDSU. Lennon’s defense ran drills against the option almost every day throughout the season.

On the other hand, he said, Georgia Southern might make risky pitches and isn’t comfortable playing from behind.

“I like North Dakota State,” he said. “I think they’ve got talent on defense. I think their speed is right where you need it, and their versatility with their front seven is pretty impressive. And I think they have the coaches who know how to defend it.”

We haven't made too many risky pitches, but they are always a possibility. As for us not being comfortable playing from behind: how would he know that? We came back from 17-3 at the half to App to tie the game. We haven't played from behind much all year (comes from the fact that we're rarely behind to begin with), but when we've had to we've done a good job of it.

"We respect NDSU's decision to go D-I," said [Roger]Thomas in an interview with the Grand Forks Herald. "But if you're going to have a rivalry, and want it to be a good one, you want to play it on a level field."

"It is so important at this time to have a strong Division II schedule," said UND head football coach Dale Lennon told the Herald. "It's very advantageous (for playoff purposes) to play top Division II teams."

Lennon also said in a press release, "The bottom line question is: Does playing NDSU help us obtain our goals? The answer came back 'no.'"
