It's all come down to Syracuse, Maryland, UMazz and undefeated Virginia for the college lax championship in Philadelphia this coming weekend. The semis are on Saturday, and the final is on Monday. I'll probably head up there like I did last year.
Who am I rooting for? The Minutemen, of course!

Well, here's doubting the 'Cuse will be pulling a finals appearance out their ass against Virginia. If the Cavaliers don't win the whole thing, it'll be the biggest let down ever. Go Wahoos!

My son and I are going to be there Saturday and Monday. Weather looks pretty good right now. And, the Phillies are home at night--may make it an all day and night affair!!:D I"ll be rooting for the Minutemen as well--despite what they did to my Mountain Hawks softball team this weekend.;)

I'll be there as well with my wife and in-laws...
I'm completely torn about whether or not to root for UMass.
The pro - they are the last I-AA Football sponsoring school.
On the con - I'm starting to consider them Lehigh's nemesis:
they knocked the football team out in the second round in a game LU had a very real chance to win in 1998 on UMass' way to their Nat'l Championship
they knocked the softball team out this weekend in two games that very easily could have gone the other wayLafayette remains the rival, but UMass is starting to get a dark space (albeit much smaller) in my heart as well...

My two cousins are going Saturday and Monday. Lacrosse for me is Zzzzzz...Zzzzzzzzzz.
Memorial Day weekend is the beach, the beach, and oh, the beach. Especially since the weather could be in the low 80's here in DE. Hallelujiah!! (i don't know nor care how to spell that word)

Lax is one of the most entertaining sports out there... how is it Zzzz for you? Im assuming you never took the time to learn the game or even watched one either.

No kidding. This is probably the kiss of death, but this year was one of the most dominating performances in any NCAA sport. In addition to being undefeated, they scored 20+ goals in five games this year and had only one game with a margin of victory of less than five goals.

I know it's a holiday weekend and most are probably busy, but if you're online you might want to tune in ESPN2. It's 4th quarter of the first semi-final game in front of a huge crowd at the Linc in Philly. Not going to say more, tune in and you'll see! ;)

There were 50,000+ there to see UMass upset Maryland and become the first non seeded team to reach the champ game.

Wow, they looked confident today. What a change. It took decades to build the program to this point. They don't have the big superstars like Fiore, Leveille, Zywicki, Glass this time, but the team seems more solid across the field.

UMass and UVA for the Championship Monday

I was there in Section 220 with an oxygen tank. ngineer was in a cushy club box section that I couldn't get into. :p
UMazz threw Maryland off its game. The Terp offense was dicombobulated all day, and the frosh goalie for UMazz was great. Final score was 8-5 , UMazz.
That said, the Minutemen will have to play the game of their lives to beat UVA on Monday. The Wahoos have an awesome offensive machine.

Not exactly 'cushy' there Ivy--not a suite, just in the Club Box section--I tell you when the sun is out--that is a 'hot' seat. The Club section 'inside' is nice and comfortable, though.:p
As for the game--UMass will have to come up with a similar strategy in keeping the ball away from UVA to have a shot. The kept the ball away from Maryland's big offensive players; must have had possession 66% of the time. UVA was 'pushed' in only one game this year- a 7-6 win over Princeton. All the other victories were by at least 4 goals and many by doubling their opposition. SU dug themselves such a huge hole, I was surprised they got to within 10-7 before wilting. What was up with their goalie--first nine shots went in!
The lateness of the post is that I just got home from the Phillies game--what a long, but enjoyable day with my son. Of course the Fightins' blew another--subject of another thread....

UMass has the momentum now.
Wish men's lax was bigger out west. UCD has a varstiy women's program but the women's game is just too wierd and the play too choppy. The only good thing about being a club team instead of varsity was that there was no security there to check what kind of beverages were in those brown paper bags.

Heat index on the field today is 100+!
UVA is up 13-7 in the 4th quarter with 9:25 left. The UMass goalie has made some great saves or it would be worse.

Virginia - national champs, baby! UMass played well early on, and when it was 5-5 I was slightly scared, but then UVA finally blew up, outscored UMass 10-2 the rest of the way. The Cavaliers finish 17-0.

What really killed the Minutemen in the 4th quarter was their inability to win faceoffs. Then when they did get the ball they shot a few too quickly without anyone backing up the shot. Lead+possession=control.

HAHAHA, excuse me while I laugh. I've lived in Harrisonburg my entire life and my father has been a professor at JMU for 26 years...and I've been attending JMU games since I was seven. I think I'm well within my rights to love both UVA and JMU.

Ah, there were go, I thought he was going to beat the over/under on this one but no less than one day after UMass makes an appearance in the Lax champhionship game does umassfan, as always, turn the discussion into a Blue Hen-hating (and strangely enough, as a sign that they've arrived, a JMU-hating) thread. Well done - I was afraid you'd be in off-season form and slow to twist the thread into that - my worries were obviously unwarranted. xidiotx

Can't say I'm shocked umassfan decided to show his face at just the right time either. JMU actually doesn't have a men's lacrosse team, but its women's team made the tournament, though the ladies did lose by 1 in the first round.

Didn't get a chance to put in my :twocents: about the Final. I had told my son on the way down the 'Sure-kill', the UMass had to hold UVA to under 10 goals to even have a shot. At halftime, they were almost on that pace. Unfortunately, UVA had a fourth gear midway through the third period, and UMass had no answer. Their goalie was terrific--a lesser goalie and the score would have been in the 20's. Just a clear case of the better team winning, but UMass had a hell of a run. congrats to both.

That happened exactly one time this season, a 7-6 win at Princeton.

UMass has enough offense to keep up with anyone. However, you have to have the ball to score. The difference after midway through the 3rd quarter was that Virginia controlled the ball much better. Virginia won more face offs and UMass threw the ball away several times trying too hard to make things happen. They lost their composure and didn't back up their shots, and allowed unsettled transitions. The bonehead slash by Reid started it all. Just like in football, the best defense is ball control on offense.

I only watched bits and pieces of the final, but from watching the semifinal, I can tell you that while they probably were trying too hard, Virginia demonstrated a level of intensity and pressure (or maybe just effectiveness) during the transitions than any of the other 3 semifinalists and that had to actually force the turnovers as much as any internal pressures to keep up/catch up UMass players may have felt.
On Saturday, iIn many cases, Virginia, Maryland, and UMass had essentially a free transition. However, Virginia had on its "full court press" (sorry, not a big lax fan so I don't know the terminology) and was backchecking far more than the others, causing a ton of Syracuse's turnovers.
I have to give Virginia similar credit for UMass' turnovers in the final, more than thinking the UMass players underperformed in any way.
