The small crowd in attendance at this game is one of the things that gives FCS a bad rap. The Selection Committee should be embarrassed for allowing this game to be televised over some of the other matchups this weekend, i.e. @ODU or @Montana.
This was a Mickey Mouse decision by a committee that apparently had an EKU "insider" using influence to get his way. This game needed to be televised from Harrisonburg.
Very sad day for FCS football.

Got this gem from a JMU fan on Bisonville the other day:
Looking forward to turning the Fargodome purple and gold. A place with no weather issues makes JMU (the fastest team in FCS) almost unstoppable. Whatcha gonna do when the purple and gold run all over you?
If you see a lot of speed jokes from Bison fans, that's why.
Interesting game so far, to bad the Colonels couldn't take advantage of the great punt return.

What a putrid first half. JMU can't establish the run at all ... no one has stopped us yet this year ... first half remined me of the 2nd half of ODU/JMU ... JMU's offensive line is playing as pathetic as they played down 3 starters in the 2nd half at ODU ... gah

Story of the game to me so far from a JMU perspective:
1) too many pass attempts - stick to the run!!!! Strange for a JMU team with MM usually only passing 8-12 times per game + wind factor.
2) Both teams stopping the run. I had confidence JMU would, but EKU's defense on the perimeter has been impressive.
3) Clutch INT for JMU; clutch 48yd FG for EKU.
2nd half should be interesting, probably coming down to the final plays of the game.

JMU's QB certainly seems capable and you have to think he's due to get a good gainer one of these times. The winner of the game is going to be whoever can pass better, and I think the nod goes to EKU as they'll play the fourth quarter with the wind at their back. Both teams playing some pretty good defense against the run, gotta love that brand of smashmouth football at the line of scrimmage. I think either team would offer up a very entertaining game versus NDSU next week.

Luckily, football really doesn't have anything to do with instilling fear. We get to start over next week and I hope that we play better then.

Been over at CAAZone... what a game! EKU played great and showed they deserved a shot in the playoffs this year. JMU found a way to pull through in the end, but it was a tough battle the whole way. Congrats to EKU on a great season - I'm sure your young team will be favorites in the OVC next year. You earned the respect of this and many JMU fans today. We are fortunate to be moving on, although I am guess we will get beat in Fargo unless NDSU is still reeling from injuries.

Wasn't EKU best against the run? They shut down our run in the first half or this game wouldn't have been as close. JMU defense really stepped up big in the 2nd half, aside from that 1 long run.

I'm just glad some of our seniors have the chance to play one more game, and that in the game I believe farthest ever from JMU. If the players go in with a loose attitude of having fun, but focused on their position's play, they can pull an upset next week. I wouldn't bet on it though.

Pass blocking? We pass??? But seriously, getting our LT back will help a lot. Still, we really should never be passing more than 10-12 times per game or we are likely losing. NDSU will be an uphill battle regardless.

People (I guess just JMU fans, most other fans haven't seen him) forget how good LT A.J. Scott is. He is only a freshman but he's a man-child. He has great feet and I wouldn't expect him to get beaten the way our fill-in was getting beaten today. If he's not back, we could be in serious trouble.

@ekufbfan--
On the EKU offense--yeah its been frustrating--especially since I think the talent is definitely there at the skilled positions. Watching TJ throw the bomb has at various times in his career been an awesome thing to behold, and as a veteran he has tended to avoid some of the mental errors he made back when he was a freshman. Denham is obviously the real deal, and Goard is as talented a receiver as you'll find in FCS these days. Our o-line was banged up today and it showed on all those blown third-and short plays (contrast with JMU converting time and again on what Coach Hood just called on the radio post-game show "third and Berea"). Still, all in all our defense was huge today--Vance, Attig, Bell, Caldwell, Patch--all of 'em--great work! With all those three-and-outs in the second half, we just asked WAY too much of them.

Longhorn, I am not being defeatist, but realistic. EKU's defensive line was doing a great job on the JMU o-line until the fourth quarter. Now, I was only listening to Schickman through the Internet, but from what I heard, it sounded far more like the offense we had against ODU and UNH than we had the past two weeks against URI and UMass. I attribute that to our young o-line still learning (aside from C Babington), and playing against better teams. This was the FIRST team we beat all year with a winning record aside from Liberty. It was a 3-point squeaker on the road despite dominating the statistics. I am not going to apologize for feeling a bit worried about facing the #2 seed in NDSU. They are solid and JMU is to me not a better team right now. Maybe getting AJ Scott back will change things, but I have a feeling we will still see weaknesses on our o-line that prevent our playmakers from realizing their potential.
Does that mean I am not supporting JMU? Of course I support and root for the Dukes like crazy. Do I think the Dukes can win next week? Absolutely. But it will take a lot of things going right for the Dukes to win. No way Montana should have come into BFS in 2008 and won in the semifinals that year, but they did with the help of turnovers and injuries. Similarly, it will take a solid effort plus some fortuitous bounces of the ball for JMU to leave Fargo with a win.
Sorry if I am not some homer that only looks at the glass half full. I can see the glass that way, but I also see the empty part. I try not to overstate either side too much.
Anyway, we're fans. I'm sure the players are thrilled and excited and will play their hearts out once again. But yes, I am not confident about next week's game and JMU's chances to win.

The playoffs are great but for the teams that lose it is a sudden shock that the season is over. EKU had nothing to be ashamed of-- they played a good game and in my opinion showed they belonged in the playoffs.
Remember the flea flicker that would have been an easy TD but the running back overthrew it in the 4th quarter. EKU makes that play and they are probably headed to NDSU. That is the nature of the playoffs.
Anyway congrats to EKU on a nice season.

Our defense was still pretty raw early in they year. If you recall, last season (2010) our defense was abysmal. In early games against EIU, Morehead State, and Youngstown State, we gave up a lot of points. By October, some of the new things that coach Spack wanted to implement were starting to come together. By then end of the year, our defense was among the best in FCS. I agree, we could have done some damage had JMU and EKU not cheated their way into the playoffs.

Please refresh my memory Redbird, where do you stand on the whole Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory and did we ever actually put a man on the moon?
The committee picks the 20 teams that they believe belong in the field. Yes it is a subjective process, but it works. Soon it will be 24 teams. It will still be subjective and #25 will feel slighted. Yes, I know EKU got beat yesterday and the OVC went 0 for 2. That doesn't mean the Colonels didn't belong in the field. It took a last second field goal to out us and we will now watch the playoffs like many others.
EKU got the invite, outbid JMU and hosted an opening round game. There was no grassy knoll in the selection process, however I do wish we had put a few more fans on the hill in the north endzone.

Holier than thou? The OVC is zero for their last 21 in the FCS playoffs, I know some people may not like reality but it is what it is. If NDSU's conference preformed like that I'd be embarrassed beyond belief.

It was right there for the taking, for the record I don't want to see the OVC or any conference struggle but if a conference is not preforming I will criticize it and the committee for continually giving that conference multiple teams in the field.

Ok, I'm gonna say this in defense of my alma mater, and then I'm gonna shut up about it because I don't really care for arguments over the internet. Kind of a lame form of social interaction, if you ask me. But this was a nice classy discussion before a few people came in and re-started the conspiracy theories and ripping on us for poor attendance and being in a conference that hasn't won in a long time, etc. Let me explain a couple things:
First, on the subject of attendance. Pathetic numbers, absolutely. But the fans that were there were completely into it and I'd like to think gave us a bit of an advantage. Something to be said for those 2,000 or so of us that did decide to come out I think. However, it was a NDSU fan who last pointed it out, so let me address it this way. I've never been to North Dakota, so I don't want to make an unfair statement. But it seems like NDSU might have an easier time getting people to come out because there's not exactly a better alternative. EKU has the misfortune of being just 30 minutes away from UK. I'm from Ohio. I clearly saw what was incredible statewide devotion to UK throughout the state. And if you think it's just basketball, you're wrong. They sell out every game in 65,000 seat stadium in spite of the fact that they pretty much suck at football. Most of the students I knew in school were UK fans their entire lives and would not give that up just because they went to Eastern. Many of them would barely support Eastern because of it. I don't agree with that. I think you should support your school. But that's the way it is here.
Now, about us not being able to talk because of our conference's performance. NDSU's had a great start to their FCS era, and that's to be commended. But Eastern's been doing this just a little bit longer. One school has more playoff appearances than we do, and we are ninth all time in playoff victories. Yeah, we've had better days. And you're having your good days now. But it may not last forever. I hope that if NDSU, any other school, hits a dry spell in the playoffs, it's fans will still have the stones to engage in civilized discussion about FCS football in an area that doesn't assume they aren't knowledgeable because their team isn't playing that great.
Lastly, the EKU-ISUr controversy is an EKU-ISUr controversy, not an OVC-MVFC controversy. Forget the OVC's playoff record for a minute (if you can), and look at the two team's body of work. They had two common opponents. Eastern went 2-0 against them. ISUr was 1-1. EKU was a minute and a half away from beating Kansas State with a true freshman backup playing quarterback. And I don't care that ISUr played EIU at the beginning of the season or whatever excuse they have their. Every game counts. If you still think they got the shaft, I don't know what to tell you. Sorry about your luck I guess. But now they're both sitting at home for the rest of the season, so I don't really think it matters.
That is all, thank you.

Holier than thou? The OVC is zero for their last 21 in the FCS playoffs, I know some people may not like reality but it is what it is. If NDSU's conference preformed like that I'd be embarrassed beyond belief.
EKU did play well against a solid team, I'll give you that. But the OVC didn't deserve the at-large, ISUR got jobbed!
ISU did not get jobbed. Zero good wins and a horrible loss and they were still in win-and-in position for their last game and didn't get it done. I don't think the OVC deserves an at large based on their history, but ISU got jobbed by nobody but themselves. It was unfortunate for the MVC that InSU got beaten, at home, in the same win-and-in scenario, and that YSU, once again in the same win-and-in position, chose the day to pull the choke job of the season and make it easy for the selection committee. Too bad, the MVC had a chance to make some noise this year but underachieved.

My opinion on ISUR is that they were not a good team at the start of the season but by the end of the season they were great. That said they have nobody to blame but themselves, they had UNI beat but then allowed them to march down the field. I will always say the MVFC deserved a third team but in the end it is their fault that they were in the position that they were in. If you only have 7 DI wins you are leaving yourself completely at the mercy of the committee.
Maybe I shouldn't say ISUR got jobbed, but instead the MVFC got jobbed. The league was too good to only get two teams in, oddly the league was much worse last year and got three teams in.

Jazzman, well said. I have nothing to add you said it all sir. Thank you.
As for EKU, we will be back next year, you can bet on it.
Adios for now.

I think we should have had three too, no doubt the MVC was much stronger this season, but all three candidates blew it out their arses. Those three win and the committee would have had a real problem.

Neither EKU nor JMU had what you might call "good wins" either. ISUR clearly played in a better conference than both schools this year. EKU and JMU had their AD's on the selection committee. Really not that hard to see what went on here.
Of course SIU fans are the only fans in the MVFC not willing to stick up for ISUR. Have fun finishing in last place in bball this year. xlolx

"clearly" better conference? How is it so clear? And our AD's leave the room when their teams are being discussed in order to avoid conflict of interest.

How is it clearly better when the OVC and MVC were 2-2 and one of your better teams lost to one of our worst.
The CAA is so far ahead of the MVC I have no need to go in that direction.

The MVFC is basically .500 against the CAA in the playoffs over the past five or so years. The OVC is miles behind the MVFC.

Since 2006 the MVFC is 5-5 vs the CAA in the FCS playoffs, most of the games have been at MVFC stadiums though.
The MVFC's real problem is vs SoCon schools, our playoff record is abysmal vs that conference.

I was at the game, Ray, you won on a fumble return, and hardly looked like one of the nations best defenses you claimed to be, at the end of October against a 2-6 SIU team. I believe that the MVC is strong and would have had at least 3 teams and likely 4 except for a perfect storm of triple chokesmanship on the last day of the season by the birds, trees, and guins.....you just can't ignore the loss to EIU, who got stomped by both EKU and 2-7 SIU, regardless of when it occurred.
And Ray: real men don't care about bb, now dry your eyes and wipe your nose and sit home and watch the playoffs.

Massey...
1. MVFC
2. SoCon
3. CAA
4. Big Sky
5. Southland
6. Patriot
7. OVC
Enough said. I don't mind the OVC(usually I cheer for their teams when not playing against the MVFC) but please do something in the playoffs before comparing yourself to the MVFC.

Even with no teams playing last week, the MVFC is still #1 in FCS. Pretty sure the MVFC went 3-1 against the OVC this year as well.
So Houndawg, it's ok for a team that played in the highest rated conference in the country, and a national ranking in the top 20 for the final month of the season, to be surpassed by two teams that played in inferior conferences with lower national rankings? The polls were obviously pretty forgiving when it came to ISU's week 1 loss to EIU when ISU proceeded to go 5-1 down the stretch in the nation's toughest conference.

Good Grief Man, GIVE! IT! A REST!
I am sure that Coach Hood would play you guys anytime. You think you can beat us, play us. That's the ONLY way you have an argument, beat us on the field. Games are not played on paper, message boards or in rankings (not in FCS anyway). Meanwhile...please the whining is getting very old. xbawlingxxbawlingxxbawlingx
BTW, one of your signature wins was against Morehead State (KY), a non scholarship program.

POSITIVE you'd be wrong. The MVFC lost a minimum of two games to OVC schools this season. Illinois State lost to EIU and Missouri State lost to EKU.
That's quite some math you pull off in Chicago..

Yes, the MVFC is indeed 2-2 vs the OVC this year.
MSU lost to EKU by 4
ISUR lost to EIU by 7
SIU beat SEMO by 28
SIU beat EIU by 17

All you had to do was win and you were in. Like I said, it didn't help that all the MVC contenders for the remaining at large bids stunk the same day you did, but they did, and it cast the MVC in an unfavorable light. You lost to your two toughest opponents and beat nobody of consequence; you made it easy for the committee.
