Monmouth freshman running back Julian Hayes (Middletown, Conn./Xavier/The Hun School) has been named a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, The Sports Network announced on Monday. The Award is named after former Mississippi Valley State and legendary NFL wide receiver Jerry Rice and is awarded to the nation's top FCS freshman. Hayes joins Monmouth wideout Neal Sterling (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan) and 18 other players as finalists for the award, which will be announced at the National Awards Banquet on January 6th in Frisco Texas. Monmouth is the only team with two players on the final list.
