Faculty councils almost always vote against athletics. Typically, college faculty members have been in acedemia all their lives and don't really understand how the world works. Alumni who attend athletic events are more likely to donate (to athletics AND academic causes) than those who don't.
The article mentions that they had one-hundred fewer freshmen than expected, which is the reason for their financial problems. Maybe they should add a football team:)

Exactly! They can join Campbell in non-schollie football!

That was my idea about a year ago when I emailed their AD - Joe Dean Jr. This is the response got - but keep in mind that Mr. Dean is also a color analyst for SEC basketball games.
"Thanks for your email and interest in the Big South. Our move to NCAA Division I in 1999 was a bold move for a small, private liberal arts college of 1,300 students. It is a stretch for us to sponsor 14 sports, much less try and start football with all the costs and facilities associated with that. Bottom line, we do not have the infrastructure, facilities, resources, or interest on campus to start football. Best wishes. Joe"
Geez - I wonder how Furman, Wofford, PC ... etc do it?

College faculty live in a fantasy world. They have never run a business nor have they been reponsible for more than turning their grades in on time and this is usually the reponsibility of their grad assistants!!!
They actually believe that alumni contributions that go to athletics would go to their pockets instead if there were no athletics!!!!!xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx
They are totally clueless about their role in their own schools and how athletics advances their school. They will always refuse to let the facts to dissuade their decisionmaking and thus hopefully most schools will ignore any of their resolutions.

So BSC is leaving the Big South, moving to DIII AND adding a football team? Kind of confusing, IMO

Not many teams drop, but whatever works for them...
I do feel bad for the athletes.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Birmingham-Southern College Board of Trustees voted today to seek permission from the NCAA to reclassify its intercollegiate athletics program from Division I to non-scholarship Division III beginning with the 2007-08 academic year.
The board’s vote comes after the first internal review and assessment of the athletics program since the college applied for membership in NCAA Division I in 1999.
Chairman of the Board James T. Stephens said that Birmingham-Southern would seek reclassification from the NCAA prior to June 1. The college would continue to compete at the Division I level in the 2006-07 academic year.

What happens to the athletes that are on scholarship now? If all sports are going non-scholly, do they lose theirs?

I believe they will/can honor the scholly for two more years. I would think the athletes would be released to transfer.
