Visiting Charleston, and we took a guided tour of the City due to threatening weather, and got to see The Citadel, with a drive by of the Stadium. Was surprised to see all the seats painted powder blue-'cool'. The driver said there are plans to expand so as to attract a bowl game. How serious is this? Considering the small size of the school, I thought it interesting that they would expand the stadium. I'd guess it seats around 16,000-20,000;does it get filled for most games?
Loved the red 'checkerboard' square between the dorms. Didn't get to see Higgins, though. would have loved to have time to stop in, though on Sunday, he might not have been in.

You should have seen the old Johnson-Haygood with it's metal (non-aluminum) seating. Couple that with the humidity and salt air = RUST. It still was a pretty good place to see a game. It held 22,000K and was the latgest facility in the SoCon. Eventhough Citadel is a small school they always put 15K+ in the stands every home game.

How central is Chatanooga? I consider Chatty in the east and it would be no more difficult for Montana fans to fly to Chatty or Charleston. More important I think Charleston's average temperature is better than Chatty's. One of the keys is air travel. Chatty is closer to Atlanta than Charleston but there are other options. Maybe some SC folks can help me out here.
Personally, I would have no problem with Las Vegas. The air travel rates are good and I would spend extra time in the Dover Casino's so I could get the high roller airfare and maybe a comped room. :smiley_wi :smiley_wi :smiley_wi :smiley_wi :smiley_wi

Yeah Ralph all 1800 students must really help attendance figures. BTW why is the word students in quotes, seems rather disrespectful?

The NCAA is supporting a NAACP boycot of South Carolina that will not award any pre-determined championships in South Carolina. This affected The Citadel because part of the financing for the new stadium was to come from the state but contingent on hosting the planned Palmetto Bowl.
I can understand if the NAACP wants to boycott SC, that's fine - but why does the NCAA feel they have to kowtow to the NAACP?
Anyway - once we can expand our stadium and if the NCAA ever wises up I'll be pushing Conway - Myrtle Beach. We should have an expanded airport and an interstate by then.

Sorry, I forgot that one can wonder into a Political Thread without any effort. Thank you Democrat Governor Fritz Hollins who put the Confederate Battle Standard into the SC. State Flag.
Can anyone offer me something other than political reasons why SC can't host a I-AA championship?

My big things are weather, community support, travel accessibility (can Western fans get decent airfare?) and decent facilities. There are ecomomic development agencies who have influence with state and local agencies and local Chamber's of Commerce that can make all of the above happen if it is a priority. I worked for such an agency for 3 years and I know that it could happen. The NAACP thing can in fact screw everything up. This of course is ridiculous as it hurts the local population and schools such as SCSU. But that is politics.

All of this talk about where to locate the national championship game got me thinking about methods to minimize travel for everyone by locating the game at the center of the I-AA world. Take Latitude and Longitude for every I-AA location and average them, but here's the twist- Weight the average by the average attendance per game from last season - so the more butts your team puts in the seats, the stronger the influence or "pull" you have on the epicenter. The result of 37.02953°N, 86.01906°W actually falls within 20 miles of a major I-AA team. Can you guess who? 2002 National Champion Western Kentucky!

...I averaged the longitude and latitude of all the teams (still in I-AA) that have played in the NC game in the last 10 years...The geographic center of the I-AA NC game participants lies within 20 miles of EKU in Richmond, KY, which is 250 miles from Chattanooga. If you go back to 1978, ironically even though EKU played in three NC games, the center moves to 40 miles from WKU in Bowling Green, KY.
Guess which I-AA NC game participant is closest to Chatty? WKU.

I think that is tremendous that they average over 15k per game with only a student body of just under 2,000. I would think they might lead the country (I-AA) in attendance/student body ratio. I surmise a lot of community support. Charleston seems to be 'big' on tradition...

Sure...
FYI 2000 students minus the 300 students on team/staff/band leaves 1700 students and I bet some of those students (especially since 90+% are male) would show up for the football game so we're looking at scewing the avg. attendance by maybe 750. Just pointing out that it's not that much of an advantage.

After 9-11 disrupted things in 2001, the next weekend I was in Charleston for a game between The Citadel and Appalachian State. With the pagentry on display that day (including a fly-over), I had a sense of patriotism I don't often feel. I felt like Johnson-Hagood Stadium was the most perfect place I could have been that day to get back into the swing of football. For all of the rust etc. of the past, Johnson-Hagood has always been a special place in my eyes.

Judging by the pictures I saw of their new facility it's going to be amazing. Charleston is one of my favorite places in the world and I wish everyone could visit there. I think it is not fair to the western teams, though. It's a much longer travel .That's why I like Chattanooga; it is a six hour drive from Savannah. If the game moved further west I might not be able to go because of cost, like those from the west.

a couple of local legislators were working on getting some of the funding for the remodel of Johnson Hagood, the bowl game mentioned was the reasoning for extra state money. So it wasn't as much The Citadel working on this bowl game but it was economic developement people doing the leg work

Charleston is wonderful. If you ever get a chance to take in a Citadel game, don't pass it up. Best games to see, VMI and Furman for the rivalries.

It rarely "sells out" but generally stays relatively full. Citadel's attendance is usually around the top of I-AA with about 18,000 per game, but for the last two years they have been playing with half a stadium and drawing 12,000 or so. I don't know what happened to the extra 6000 people, but suspect they will return now that the a complete stadium is present. One of the reasons they went 2 years playing in a half stadium is that once they started tearing down the old stands, there was talk in Charleston of either expanding Johnson Hagood to 35,000 (the minumum size for a bowl game) or building a new stadium in a new location - this basically pushed back the renovations by a year. Charleston leaders wanted the taxpayers of South Carolina to pay for the stadium expansion, an idea that wasn't very popular outside of Charleston. In addition, the NCAA-NAACP boycott also would prohibit I-A bowl games.

Unfortunately blu, that is the only reason needed. Until either the NAACP gives up (yeah right) or the State of South Carolina gives in (yeah right) or the NCAA turns it's back on the NAACP (yeah right), Charleston will never been considered for the NC. : smh : Shame, because that's #1 on my list if it leaves Chatty.

My son is a rising Junior and I can tell you a Citadel football weekend is quite an experience. Best games are either Homecoming or Parents weekend when a military parade takes place a couple hours before kick-off. Also, watching the Summerall Guards, a precision drill team comprised of the best cadets from the senior class, perform during halftime of Parent's weekend is great. And, as a Scotsman, I love the Pipe Band which marches with the Marching band. Very patriotic.
Also, the football is getting better too. I think they have a great shot to move up to position 3-6 in the Socon depending on injuries, etc. Still think ASU, Furman, are a little ahead on talent, but that Citadel coaching staff understands the culture of a place like The Citadel and is attracting the right type of kid.
Also, attendence is so high because of the loyalty of the alumni. They are so proud of their school and they take pride in looking out for one another after they graduate.

I also hope to make it there this season. It has to be tough for The Citadel to get top-quality athletes because of the admission standards there. The same for VMI. What I admire about these institutions and the service academies is they don't change their standards just to get better athletes.

Just got back from Savannah. Both cities were wonderful. First time I got to spend some time in what felt like truly southern cities. Yes we took a tour of Charleston and the distinction was explained as we went down Calhoun Street. Also decided to drive the backway to Charleston and stopped in Beaufort for lunch--another great little town. Name of the restaurant was Bateaux-just over the bridge. Would love for Lehigh to be able to schedule a couple away games in that section of the country. Would make for a great weekend.
