The weather was far from ideal for Week 9 of the NEC football schedule, but the following five men overcame the conditions and helped their teams to victory. NEC Offensive Player of the Week Andrew Smith the Great Danes’ ground-and-pound attack in a 24-0 NEC shutout victory over Wagner by totaling 170 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. The NEC Defensive Player of the Week award went to two recipients – Duquesne’s Serge Kona and Sacred Heart’s Niko Sierra. The former caused three fumbles in a 16-0 blanking of Monmouth, while the former picked off a pair of passes in a 27-15 road win over Robert Morris. UAlbany punter Paul Layton captured the NEC Special Teams Player of the Week award after marvelously handling the conditions at an always-windy Wagner Stadium. He punted six times and thrice pinned the Seahawks inside their own 20. Saint Francis (PA) ended its five-game slide by downing Central Connecticut with help from cornerback Mike Dennis. The NEC Rookie of the Week logged two tackles, an interception, and a pass break-up.
